I'm on an on-call cycle with 2 other guys. We each take it for a week. It's been 6 months and I've already gotten used to it sorta but it sucks to know your weekend is ruined if your buddies are doing something really cool and you can't attend since there's no internet connection nearby.

But what I wanted to know is if I'm being underpaid for this invasion of my personal life. We get one hour of pay (calculated from salary) for taking the phone for a day. Another hour for each call +1 if you need to work for more than an hour to solve it. It's 3 hours pay if you need to go to the office or on-site.

The money ain't bad and 3/5 problems are easy as pie but the calls are usually from 12-5AM. I've heard of others getting paid as much as 3-4x hourly rate each call.

I get paid 250 bucks allowance for being on call as regularly as you do it.

then pretty much the same pay scheme as you get, although if I have to set foot in the office it's automatic 2 hours even if from home to work and back takes me 10 mins in a car. Are you IT support?

the 250 allowance works out to about an extra 4 grand a year on the salary so I like it. plus I barely ever get a page.

Yeah IT shit here. I have to go in to change tapes etc on weekends too but it's 15 mins away for me. Another hour pay each day.

On average I get $300-400 extra spending cash each month. Canadian though.
If I could just not have the phone on Friday and Saturday, I would take it every other day of the year. Excluding holidays.

I get the IS on-call phone about once every 2 months. But, I only get paid $110 for having it the entire week. It doesn't matter how many calls, or how long the call lasts.

I worked on-call as a health care worker for 5 years at the largest psychiatric facility in Western Canada. Honestly, the hours could be a pain in the ass when it came to partying and whatnot, but they'd work around my college schedule and that was helpful. Plus high union wages + late teens = bank account coolness.

I'm on call 24/7.. I'm the bitch of my place. If a PDF file goes bad at the press, geuss who gets to drive back to work to fix it.. regardless of what time it is
