HDTVTest - LG G5 OLED Gets Higher Brightness & Better Colours without MLA!

That's nice but maybe they should add Black Frame Insertion so we can actually play 30fps (retro) games on an OLED. Seems like a function a lot of people would pay for (enough to warrant including it).

I always wonder what panel the 42 and 48" models have. I know it's always different at those sizes, but they don't say how it's different.

New panel technology it is? Then if C5 comes with MLA panel that would be a huge upgrade.

MLA has been scrapped for all series in 2025. Too expensive to manufacture because of bad yields.

LG C5 remains non-MLA

Since the introduction of MLA OLED in 2023, consumers have hoped to see it trickle down into the more affordable C series, but unfortunately C5 will not incorporate the MLA OLED panel in 2025 either.

LG said that C5 will feature a slight increase in brightness and color performance over last year's C4, along with an upgraded Alpha 9 processor, but otherwise it will mirror C4. C5 will be available in 42 to 83 inches.

Always makes me chuckle when these companies tall about brightness, like 'it's 70% brighter brighter than a conventional oled on a 3% window in vivid mode' lmao. Of course the 4000 nits they announce is false advertising.

So no QD-OLED still 🤭

They will never do it. Is QD still worse when it comes to burn in?

New remote looks like shit, with less inputs (no dedicated input button!) and of course focus on "ai, ai, ai.." bullshit.

I think I will change my C2 around C8 or C9... Or even later.

2nd and 3rd gen QD panels use better blue material that is much more burn-in resistant compared to 1st gen. S95C with 2nd gen panel did well in Rtings burn-in test, resisted burn-in for longer time than WOLED competitors but at the expense of bigger brightness loss.

I love Vincent but he sucks too much at math to be Asian.

Yeah, that 600 x3 =/= 1800 fucked me up.

There is discussion in the comments if it's right or wrong, lol.

Thanks. QD looks like great tech, I think I will abandon WOLED in ~2029 (if my panel lives that long). Problem is, I HATE Samsung and their shitty OS.

Meh, I'll stick with my CX. I used to buy a new OLED every year but I'm just happy with my CX.
Upgraded from cx to g4 this year. Depending on your room conditions it didn't seem like a very big upgrade. So many shows these days are graded so dark it doesn't seem to make much difference.

No input button is criminal. How are 3rd party remotes with LGs? Do they still function just fine despite the whole floating cursor nonsense?

I just upgraded my 55 C1 to a 75 QM8(2024). I realized that I really prefer brightness over black levels. Having great black levels are a bonus. As OLED brightness levels start to catch up to Mini LED brightness, Mini LEDs are starting to catch up to OLED black levels. I would be really concerned about burn-in if I had a OLED that got as bright as my QM8.

I've manipulated mine to do so. Pray for my panel.

Perfect for dark room but full screen peak nits at 300.. their 10% window 2k.

Most scenes are not trying to hit 100% bright window in HDR so its usually not a huge issue in most scenes. I can run my G4 with decent ambient light no problem. An extra 100 nits for full screen brightness should actually be pretty noticeable compared to the G4.

...*raises hand*
Uh, what is MLA?

(*Lemme google that for me)

So it's an enhancement for OLEDs specifically to boost brightness with an array of micro lenses to project brightness. Reviews on its results seem mixed, with a lot of the complaints not against the tech concept but ultimately turning back on the age-old issue of OLED burn-in. (MLA wouldn't increase burn-in, would it? I don't see that it would return energy behind it.) Do people have MLA OLED TVs that they have liked or not liked?

Agree, projector wouldn't need to be any more than 250 nits in my completely dark room but my LCD hitting 900 10% is blinding now even during the day.

On my 48 inch C3 I notice the difference in perceived brightness if I keep a desk lamp on. If I'm watching Avatar or LOTR I'll keep the room dark, but I don't care about losing details in Netflix slop.
I guess it's a matter of managing your kino viewing schedule and ambient light. I just watched Pitch Black on this TV and the first half felt like staring into the sun. IIRC peak sustained brightness of this model is 150 in full screen, and it obviously never hit that but it was brutal.

Speaking of Netflix, check out their guidelines: https://partnerhelp.netflixstudios....Color-Critical-Display-Calibration-Guidelines
Their recommended peak brightness is 1000 and max 5 nits ambient light during colorization.
