Heavenly Sword - IGN review (UH OH INCOMING)

and you can tell HS has this from the 5 minute long demo?

or are you also in the Fullyrambolic boat of hoping that "Twing Twang" is twopence licking erotica?

Joke post, right? Or did you now read my whole post?

I was comparing the story of NG to HS, and from the videos I've seen of HS, I think its safe to come to the conclusion that the story in Heavenly Sword is much better presented and explained than that of Ninja Gaiden.

The lasting appeal one is the only section I have a "problem" with. I mean, I've seen games with shorter campaigns and no unlockables score higher there.
If they're saying the game is repetitive and the combat uninspiring, then it makes sense for the lasting appeal to be low even despite the unlockables, because there's no appeal in going through the game again to get them.

That, at least, is my understanding.

I'm really disappointed this game didn't live up. I really was hoping it'd be the DMC/NG equal that would sway me in the direction of getting a PS3.

I'm probably just gonna get a 360 for Bioshock and Mass Effect now....unless Drake's Fortune is AAA....but somehow I doubt it will score higher than a 9.

Simply stating "not surprised" isn't good enough for NeoGAF. Instead, I'd like to thank Team Ninja for setting the bar five years ago.

I thought the progression to this game would be Devil May Cry-->God of War-->Heavenly Sword. They were blatantly copying God of War with this game. I don't see Ninja Gaiden as an influence.

*long exhale*

It's good to see reviews matching my opinion of this game. I've refrained from commenting for so long mostly due to the rabid attacks of any dissenting opinion lately as far as HS is concerned.

Definitely still a rental, but I doubt I'll enjoy it.

it's ok man, Uncharted is still on the way, there's still hope for PS3

Why are you even saying that?

I'm calling people stupid faggots because they've argued about an unreleased game with a 15 minute demo which got a poor review for 8 pages solid.

protip: Saying "faggot" is instaban around here. Bishop is going to bend you over in about 10 minutes.

i think they focused too much on the graphics/presentation/that motion capture acting stuff instead making a good amount of gameplay that feels satisfying?

i mean u can make a short game and feel awesome playing it, but this one seems it went to alot of the cinematics time =/

It just sort of sucks when people look forward to a game for over a year and a respected publication says it isn't all that. Even if IGN was a little harsh on a 7.0....maybe it should be an 8.2 or 8.3 or who the **** really cares.....but we need to face it that the game probably isn't the AAA masterpiece we had hoped. Most other major publications aren't going to turn around and give it 9's...and when we get our hands on it we're most likely going to be somewhat disappointed.

....and in 5 years when people are listing PS3's best efforts, ya....this probably won't be on it.

It shows the sad state of affairs the PS3 is in. Games like Heavenly Sword are way over-hyped because the PS3 has nothing else to hang its hat on, so if they get mediocre reviews people don't want to accept it.

I played the demo and thought it was OK. Not great, just OK. Looked nice, but the gameplay struck me as pure button-mashing (and not even button-mashing as good as God of War, either). The first thing I thought was "God of War rip-off". And if you're going to be ripping off GoW, you'd better be coming with something super-hot or it's not even worth it.

I did have HS pre-ordered, but I cancelled after reading the IGN reviews because they confirmed my suspicions about the quality of the game. I was on the fence as it stood, and I figured there's just too many GREAT games coming out in the next couple of months to bother with one that's just OK.

I think HS may have ultimately shot itself in the foot by missing any reasonable definition of the 'launch window'. Had it hit last November, or maybe even this March, it probably would have reviewed better thanks to inevitable launch-score-inflation. It could have been remembered as the first title to really show off what the PS3 could do, combined with some decent gameplay, hampered by a short runtime, too many cutscenes, and (apparently) too many sections where you don't get to enjoy the combat. But launch titles get that sort of thing forgiven often.

At 10 months into the PS3's life, with the sales situation being what it is, expectations for HS are just too high--It could still be a fun game, but I think there's a decent chance reviewers in general will be a whole lot harsher on it. It doesn't sound like it will be a surefire system-seller, and at this point, that's kind of what the PS3 needs.

The review didn't state anything about the combat being button mashing - in fact it said the opposite...and said there wasn't enough combat. Plus it didn't rip off GOW when being in production before GOW was released. They merely followed a similar path.

Plus anyone who's given real time to the demo and mastered it combat knows it's not button mashing, and you're really sending it down the rive by saying so. Give it a chance, because the combat is complex and very satisfying.

Heh, it may very well not even be a rental for me, although reviews may or may not play into that. I'm actually finding myself in the very unfamiliar position of having too many games to buy for my PS3. In terms of money, but most importantly time. I don't know what I'm going to do in 2008. What a horribly delicious dilemma.

i dont think this game is a button smasher, you can smash em but its not gonna get you anywhere since enemies will always put up their guards and counter back.

As long as the framerate wont have huge slowdowns, I'm sure I'll be able to enjoy it instead, and I wont end up frustrated wanting to shove a UMD down a developer's throat.

Well I'm glad it makes you feel good about yourself.

Say that to the people who discussed the Mario Kart Double Dash review by Fran 7.9 Mirabella :p

A 7.0 is still a good score, so I'm not worried. I've enjoyed some games that scored much lower than this. I don't put so much faith into reviews most of the time.

Well let's hope Ninja Theory can feel triumphant by beating their unprecedented 76% for Kung Fu Chaos (on Gamerankings) when all is said and done.

Well I really don't buy tons of games every year,I just keep my eye on the ones that I know are meat and potato games for me so Heavenly sword is still a buy. This may come off as a cop out but i don't mind the game being short. I have terrible times finishing games, hell a game like Fable took me close to 30 hours a few years back,so you can see that short games for others isn't the case for me. Maybe I'm just blessed in a dumb fuck way.

I think that's sound reasoning. I never finished Fable. Was a lot of fun...but I like games that I can jump in and out of without trying to remember what was going when I left it previously.

What makes this a rental for me is not only the length...but the fact that there are so many other good games out there and I'm on a limited budget. I plan to rent and play Bioshock...I'm not gonna buy it this year. Next summer, I may pick up both games to have in my collection.

But if this is the sort of game you dig, and you'll likely have a blast playing it, then buy it...it would be a great purchase on your part.

I watched the IGN video review, this guy seems to have been stretching for negative things.

Let me see, good story (unlike God of War, Ninja Gaiden), Good deep combat, great graphics and sound, good boss fights. What did hit nitpick on, repetitive combat, the bad guys didn't vary too much - just like every other game in it's genre. Ninja Gaiden and God of War is mostly the same few guys, yet they score 9+? Ok, dink it on being short but don't find excuses to lower the score.

I guess you guys won't be picking up Warhawk either since reviews have been poor so far, right?

Don't rub it in. If Uncharted gets below an 8, I'm going to kill myself.\

The ultimate ban bet.

It's not worth stressing over reviews. Reviews tend to be poorly written with little consistancy. If a game you like reviews poorly, say "fuck them" and enjoy the game.
