Sources: Apple developing updated AirPorts, two-button mouse

Apple Computer is said to be readying updates to its AirPort wireless base stations and may soon debut a much demanded two-button mouse.

Updated AirPort Base Stations

According to sources, the company is expected to introduce updates to both its AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express products in the coming months.

While specifics are lacking, sources said the new base stations would sport minor component and software revisions while continuing to support the current AirPort Extreme Card.

One hot, but unconfirmed, rumor is that Apple may be considering the addition of a standard optical audio out port to its AirPort Express product. The current version ships with a 3.5mm mini-Audio jack for analog or optical digital sound, but requires that users purchase a $40 kit to tap the optical interface.

A Two-Button Apple Mouse

In other news, Hell has not frozen over yet, but it very well may.

According to sources who have so far filed accurate reports on Apple's future hardware plans, the company is feverishly working on a two-button wireless optical mouse that it intends to release.

Apple enthusiasts have longed for an Apple-branded two-button mouse for over a decade, but their requests have gone unanswered. So what has changed? According to sources, 'it's the company."

With Apple now profiting from low-priced consumer electronics as it makes a push to reclaim market share from Windows, a two-button mouse is 'almost an essential,' sources said.

It's unclear when the computer maker plans to introduce the mouse. Insiders warned that anticipation may continue to build for months as the company perfects the product.

Apple has just recently reduced the price of its wired mouse to $29 and its wireless optical mouse to $59. The two-button wireless optical mouse would likely debut at the $69 price point once reserved for the company's current wireless mouse.

"Jaws will drop," said one insider.

Fina-damned-ly. It was one of the hardest things to get used to when i started using this mac. Nothing beats firefox's middle click, though. And forward and back buttons. Being lazy was never so good.

I love Apple, but god damn it.

All I can imagine is some abomination along the lines of the iPuck, or that f'ing awful TEH WHOLE THING IS A BOOTUN DOOOWOOP! rubbish they currently use. Like ONE BIG BUTTON SLICED DOWN THE MIDDLE!

For a company that prides itself on aesthetic design, they can't design a freakin' mouse to save their lives.

Oh well. All this means is that when I eventually have to replace my machine, hopefully I won't have to buy a functional mouse.

I don't know what I'm feeling right now. I just don't want to see people *praising* Apple for creating their own 2 button mouse. If anything, they should be criticised for not doing it yet. Either way, there have always been 2 button mice available for macs, so whatever.

I hope this thread was only created to let us know that Apple is doing what it probably should've a long time ago.

Doesn't anyone else find this part of the article ridiculous? I swear I bought my Logitech optical mouse for like 10 bucks. How can anyone justify a 70 dollar mouse?

WTF developing? Why don't they take a trip down to the nearest electronics store and take a look at the mouse section. Hell they'll find not only 2 button mice, but 3,4, and 5 button ones. What's going to be their next move, coming up with a way to scroll through pages without moving the mouse. Perhaps a wheel on the mouse.

I'm using a Kensignton 5 button plus wheel right now. If you really want a mouse with tons of buttons, you can go third party like I do for my PC mice as well.

No scroll wheel? Come on Apple...

It doesn't say anything about a scroll wheel. But it also doesn't say the new mouse won't have one. You can't assume it's not there if it's not mentioned. I'd think a scroll wheel (or something offering similar functionality) would be a given.

Note that it's a bluetooth wireless optical mouse (I'm assuming bluetooth, since the current one-button wireless mouse is bluetooth). Cheapest price I found on PriceWatch for a bluetooth mouse was about $40. Best Buy sells a Microsoft branded bluetooth mouse for $79. So the price is right in there with the other brand-name retail prices.

It's not like they are designing the first two-button mouse in history, just that it's a first for them. I guess it'd be kind of akin to Nintendo making an R18 game or something. And yes, it will be expensive, but you pay them for their designers. Whther they're worth that money is up to you, but I'm sure a lot of people here buy designer clothes/shoes/gadgets whatever.

Why is a bluetooth wireless better than other wireless mice?

well. all bluetooth wireless things work with one adapter. while most other wireless things need a separate adapter each.. and my powerbook comes with a bluetooth card inside.. so no extra things are sticking out if i use a bluetooth mouse.

Watch as Apple goes after Apple Insider for posting this news. "How DARE you reveal our top secret plans for our revolutionary (gasp) two-button mouse!"

I have a four-button trackball with a scroll wheel for my Mac. On the other hand, the only thing I use it for is Starcraft.

If the news is simply "Apple is developing a two-button mouse," then that's barely even newsworthy. What I'm worried about is the possibility that this signals a change in Apple's software design philosophy--part of the perception of ease of use that's characteristic of OS X comes from the fact that it's designed to be intuitively functional with a one-button mouse. I'd hate to see that standard relax.

What's next... a scroll wheel that maybe also functions as a third button? Or hey how about a fourth button right where your thumb rests... I've gone crazy with innovation!

Oh it's going to be fun to see how Apple spins this as innovative. "Right-click...different."

Lord knows their ONE button mice were already absurdly overpriced, let's see if they use the two-button logic to charge twice as much.

"Jaws will drop"? "Feverishly working"?

That whole thing sounds like a joke article to me. Then again, Apple's mice have been joke since the first iMac, so who knows what kind of crap they are cooking now.

I just remembered my dibelief when I first saw the 'iPuck' and later on that silly whole mouse button thing. "Is *this* really from a company that prides themselves in quality user interfaces and ergonomic designs"?

It's funny, I'm a PC / Mac user (i've always owned PCs, Mac's since OSX, and use them both constantly).

I have a MS Optical mouse hooked up to my mac but I STILL control click (my first OSX mac was an ibook so I was used to the touchpad and single button mouse). I kind of wonder if I'm the only person that does this.

The whole mouse button actually works surprisingly well. That said, I have an MS optical 4 button mouse with scroll wheel connected to my Mac. Unlike Vark I right-click :)

Screw scrollwheel. Apple should find a way to integrate a clickwheel into their mouse.
Who knows, maybe it'll work. Make the buttons touch sensitive - or something. Come on apple.

man they must have high IQ over at Apple.
why the hell design a one button mouse to start with.

You DO know that Apple was the first company to release a personal computer that used a mouse at all, right? And that that mouse only had one button, so for additional functionality you were meant to hold down keys on the keyboard while clicking? And that this was done on the Lisa in around 1982, and again on the first Macintosh in 1984? It's not like the one-button mouse was a recent design for Apple, or that it was arbitrary. Now, did they stick with that one-button design for too long? Certainly -- but that doesn't invalidate their original intent.

I cannot wait to go on the Apple boards and see the purists bitch.

Nice to see Apple finally get with the times. I actually like the one button mouse that they have, but two is just better.

Better? I would think it's a minimal requirement at this point. What possible excuse is there for any modern mouse to not have at least two buttons and scroll wheel? It can only serve to make things easier, so why not include it. Does anyone honestly look at your average scroll mouse and go "whoa, that thing is just over-complicated and intimidating".

I do believe the answer is yes. Now I;m not saying that two-buttons +wheels is bad, contrary in fact -I love two buttons and the scroll. I'm a huge user of teh right-click, properties, or cut and paste. I do occasionally use ctrl-x and stuff, but I know loads of people (not just older users) who aren't that computer savvy still go all the way over to the edit-button and scroll over to 'cut'.
It CAN actually be difficult for people who aren't quick computer users (and I say quick, and not inexperienced, since these people use computers all the time) to have to navigate with 3 or even 2 buttons.

On some programs that we use, the buttons do completely different things. For example in one program, Left mouse= rotate screen, middle mouse=select coordinate, right mouse = zoom. On another program, a similar one to the first, left=select coordinate, middle+vertical = zoom, middle+horizontal=clipping, right =rotate, middle+right+horizontal = rotate in Z-dimension.

In nearly all windows-based programs, right mouse is normally a shortcut to things (such as properties, cut/paste), and a lot of people still don't use them. Apple is simply catering for these people who don't need to concern themselves with more than the single button. And no, those people aren't retarded or anything, just operating with simplicity (even if it's less efficient).

On that note, you can see how difficult it can be with game consoles, where there are upwards of 8-10 buttons, plus two sticks, pluse d-pad. IT's not having to deal with coordination, but even remembering what everything does. Like mouse operation, it may be second nature to some, but not to all.
