Hell is Us - review thread

Mr Matty liked it a lot

Played 2.5 hours and yeah, this game is a banger.

Some random points in no particular order:

Pros
- insane vibes. The weird atmosphere, the supernatural stuff; extremely tantalizing
- unique setting, fictional country and situation but it 100% reminds me of 90's Balkan Bosnia/Kosovo war
- insanely grim moments (mass graves, people grieving, horrors of war)
- music is incredible
- production value is top notch. Amazing presentation, attention to detail. The credit sequence after leaving the first area was fucking sick
- GREAT voice acting. Seriously, the farmer you meet 2 minutes into the game has some amazing voice delivery and is easily one of the best performances I've heard in a while. But other NPCs are great so far too. Adam Jensen is Adam Jensen, so you know what you get with the main character
- performance is great. I'm playing on a 4070 with dlss on balanced. Haven't maxed out anything but the game runs great and looks great as well

Cons
- combat. Yeah, reviews were right. The combat just kinda sucks. The enemies don't just attack but they phase shift making it hard to see, hard to anticipate and hard to fight strategically. I find myself button mashing and bruteforcing my way through fights more than I'm playing strategically. Maybe it takes some getting used to but up until now this is by far the weakest part of the game
- enemy design. Those enemies that are tethered to ???? something with the umbilical cord are even worse. Those formless entities are super hard to read so you can't anticipate anything. Again, I'm just bruteforcing my way through these fights, Not fun to fight at all.

Might just switch the difficulty to easy and enjoy the ride because I don't want the combat to sour me on an otherwise amazing experience.
Eventually you start understanding the morphing thing, it does the typical videogame attacks, spear, blunt etc.

I had the same feeling during the demo but towards the end i managed to even parry the fuckers.

Not trying to be a dick but reading the reviews I just don't get the point of this game. If the combat sucks and the main characters story is shallow then what exactly is the point of playing this game??? You fucked up the two most important things about a game meaning there's no point in me playing your game personally.

It seems like a large portion of people here have "hardcore gamer syndrome," as if a game not guiding you makes a game good, even though the gameplay and story are disappointing in many reviews.

Certainly better than hand holding with yellow painted ledges everywhere and the character or sidekick whispering every goddamn hints/solutions/crap they see every damn minutes.

There's a reason why Morrowind is still regarded by elder scroll fans as the best one, or Animal well or Tunic get high praise for their puzzles and no hand holding approach. Hell even Zelda BOTW is praised for this, a drastic departure from the Skyward sword ten hour long tutorial holding your hand firmly.

even though the gameplay and story are disappointing in many reviews.

And many reviews I am seeing say the combat foundation is solid, just needs more enemy variety. The puzzle gameplay is top tier. The environment is one of the best in a long time along with interesting characters you meet and their side quests. Including peoples playing it right now.

But sure, do continue to troll a game review thread that you have no interest of playing.

So, basically, people that tried the demo and enjoyed it are wrong, and the reviewers must have it all figured out? You've really cracked the code, genius.

So the consensus in most reviews is that it seems enemy variety and combat are the weakest parts of the game. As mentioned yesterday, played some of it last night and liked it so far.

Definitely think it's worth the look despite.

Demo was solid. It's just such a packed month that even if you have the money where do you get the time for it all?

For me this will be a November or December pick up.

Yea, seems like a 7/10 game, but if it clicks with you, you'll think it's more of a 8 or 9.
That's how I am with a lot of 7/10 kinda games. Usually cause they're the ones doing something different.

FightinCowboy made this game sound like an easier version of Souls games.

THat has me intrigued. I often find that games that try to emulate souls difficulty try too hard.

Installed on Steam Deck. Installing on PC. Played the demo twice, and don't even care if I gotta do the beginning for a 3rd time. Lets GO!!!!

I doubt Silksong will hurt the sales that much. For some reason everyone acts like Silksong is a major release. A side scroller is a niche market at best.

Uh….

You saw every stores chocked out today because of Silksong? Nintendo / Xbox / PlayStation/ Steam? For hours and hours?

530k CCU players of Silksong right now on steam in middle of the day with server problems.

It's a major event. This is not niche at all. The first one was probably more quiet because it was unknown, but Silksong wait and hype, #1 wishlisted game on Steam, is MAJOR now.

Are you serious? Its thursday and the all time peak is half a million players papi

The game is not only gonna hurt this games sales but many in the upcoming days and weeks

I think the hype is kinda overblown. I'm sure it'll sell a few million in no time.
But I bet even people that like Hollow Knight haven't got around to finishing it. Let alone ready to jump on the sequel to day it comes out.
I plan to get it eventually, but not jumping on it now.

I tried the demo and wasn't feeling it after like 40 minutes, so I stopped playing (wasn't in the right mood overall either) even before I got to combat, but playing the game now, I am really impressed by it. The gameplay is fun, world is beautiful, characters are intriguing, atmosphere is great etc The main issue is how heavy the game is on my system. I have to use frame gen x2 and DLSS quality or balanced (can't remember) with high settings to get just 60–80 fps (4090 7800x3d). The game has had small rare stutters, albeit less than most games these days, not that that's exactly a positive point, just a less crap one. Looking forward to playing more as it definitely has its hooks in me. Also, it supports 32:9 out of the box with no mods needed, which is nice.

Is it really a bomb though?
Seems like a bit of a dud. Stiff competition and a premium price tag aren't helping. Game also looks mid.

I saw a lot of hype for this on GAF over the past couple weeks. Figured it'd be something interesting, but when I watched the reviews I was unimpressed.

Dang. :(

This and Lost Souls really disappointed me lately. I really need to look into Silksong now. I've never played the first and I'm not hugely into Metroidvania games, but I've played a couple over the last year and they are warming up to me.

For years y'all have been saying "I wish modern games wouldn't hold my hand too much", then call this mid.

I do agree that the enemy variety sucks though.

Based on the demo, the combat does feel like that. It's certainly Souls inspired but leans more into action game territory with more options and more lenient design. You have a drone as kind of "sidekick" that can assist in combat.

Either way, it also has a health regain mechanic that overall made the combat pretty easy. I wasn't even close to dying once. It also has difficulty options I'm pretty sure. It's definitely not a Souls LIKE.

then call this mid.
Is it not? Character movement is jank + bad combat. Thats one hell of a 1-2 combo for a video game.

Modern Musou games don't have that problem and they've been the poster boy for mid for over two decades.

Decent graphics and atmosphere can only carry a game so far.

I'm 25+ hours in on the hardest difficulty and I think this game is amazing.

I haven't found it that difficult- died a handful times.

The exploration, environments/world buildingand puzzle solving is wonderful, but I'd say the whole "no handholding" thing is a bit overblown. Yes, you don't have giant quest markers or waypoints, but there's certainly enough data to keep you going if you take a little extra time to consult the codices in your tablet.

I've been taking notes on my phone too supplement but I've found I can usually deduce if I spend time looking at collected notes.

The combat is definitely the weakest part, but I also think that it's over blown in terms of how bad it is. Yes, there's a lot of room for improvement, but it's a totally competent and fun set of systems.

So far, this is definitely looking like my game of the year

Are you talking about hell is us?

The game is 50 dollars, so really 30 dollars for a key and has multiple high level aspects, combat is still competent but easy and that is the game weakest point.

What exactly looked mid?

P.s. movements are not jank at all, dude can't jump but i never thought it felt jank at all...maybe a tiny bit light but not enough to be annoying.

Combat is just easy, but not jank you always feel in perfect control, i wish it was more jank to add some challenge but it play smooth as butter...

The character looks like he's ice skating and his movement is very loosey-goosey, like he has no weight. I'm pretty good at eyeballing these things so I trust my gut.

tiny bit light
Exactly. Like he's made out of paper. I hate that.

You admit the combat is the weakest part of the game, and that's a common criticism I'm seeing everywhere. Huge red flag for me. I can sometimes lower my standards if there's enough positives to make up for it, but I'm not seeing anything compelling here.

When I say jank, I'm not talking about not being in control of the character. I mean an unscientific "it looks like shit and very unsatisfying." I heard someone saying he used the same light attack combo for the whole game. Like wtf... lol.

There's too many awesome games to play right now so I don't have time to try the demo. Maybe next month.

In video look lighter than he actually is, he still feel a bit light for my taste but really not worse than like...90% of japanese games where characters slide without weight because jap devs like responsivness over weight movements.

Dude feel lighter during exploration, during combat it feel like he has added weight.

I can't say anything in defence of the combat, for now it's very easy but it feels good to play so it's a shame.

Ok..guys, its time to eat crow. This is an example of a horrible take. Silksong was a SMASH hit and I thought it was being overhyped.

I'll own it. I blew it.

Congrats to the developers. I may even pay $20 to support cheaper games. I also hate side scrollers.

Takes a real man to come back and own it

Handholding in this day and age is waypoints, markers, GPS lines to the exact thing that you're supposed to do or visit. that's not handholding, that is presenting the solution.

This game has plenty of handholding; it guides you to the solution by telling you what you need or where you need to go. That is what handholding is.

After 5 hours the only moment I actually had to actively use my brain is when some vault had a password input and the half the input was in one journal and the other half in another so I had to "memorize" a six digit code.

I worry for people who struggle with puzzles like that.
