Paid? It's free with Playstation®Plus
Remember when Sony was in an underdog position and did not charge for MP during the early days of the PS360 era? Even made a point of using it in ads.
Seemingly memory holed off the internets today, with only an old 2008 Destructoid article remaining.

Unfortunately that advertising didn't work with people paying for xbox live trying to justify how PSN was a second rate service (even though it had dedicated servers for first party games) and how they would happily pay for XLG. Unfortunately people normalised this.

Sick idea to charge your main customer base 80 Euro while taking away exclusive games. Whats the upside of playing sony mp games on a sony platform.

I'm sick of online multiplayer games and having to pay to play them online on consoles. Gonna pass on this.
I wonder if anyone at Sony realizes that people like us are literally not buying some games due to their insane cost of going online ($95/year here). I have skipped several games that I would have bought otherwise.

Hell, bring back the $10 game-specific online pass at this point.

I used to use PS+ for the monthly games + the game library for extra when they introduced that. But the increase has made it just not worth the price, so I have cancelled. I use my playstation for almost exclusively single player games, or... hybrid online like Elden Ring or downloading car paint jobs on GT7. But I play online exclusively on PC largely down to the superior input of keyboard + mouse.

Worst there's no good reason multiplayer should not just be free, its only because companies can force you to pay within the walled Gardens they have built.

What are we 12?

If the game is a paid game and requires plus, since when is this an issue?

Or are we making mountains out of molehills?

Did anyone expect anything different? Am I missing something here 🤔

Some people had this unrealistic expectation that Sony would make their own GAA playable without Ps+ because they are first/second party and they are launching day 1 on PC (where multiplayer is free).
Which was always silly, they aren't going to significantly raise the price of Ps+ and then start giving you options NOT to subscribe lol.

They are, but they've decided that the money they get from all the people that do subscribe is probably way more than the extra sales they'd get from making multiplayer free.
They have almost 50 million subscribers paying $60/year (soon $80), that's several billions a year for very little effort.

The PS4 launched with F2P games not needing Plus. Even with the success of the PS4 and PS5 Sony kept F2P games not needing Plus.

So they kept a lil bit of that PS3 spirit. Remember MS didnt make that change until last year.

Hell, games on PSNow also didnt need Plus for online MP.

Don't you think it's weird that ps gamers lose exclusive access while paying significantly more for worse game. The only good way around is make every sony gaas game f2p. It's especially shitty after a 30% increase for the literally the same service. Its a really bad look.

It's fair for sony not do but its also fair to say that they kick their own fanbase in the gut with this move. Iam literally disgusted.

Why are you trying to make controversy and outrage when there is none?

This is no different than any other online game on PlayStation

And why is this a thread meanwhile new 4k gameplay footage of HellDivers 2 dropped and all everyone is talking about is that the game requires PS Plus? Like what???

Where is the gameplay thread?

The counter argument from console fee supporters is that:

- The fees pay for the server infrastructure
- The fees can keep the games going online
- Each console network has their own all-in-one kind of service.... games, profile, friends list, movie/NF apps, achievement/trophy pts

Don't be an idiot.

There are no console fee supporters. There used to be on the 360 when online was free on PS3. But the moment Sony started charging for online on PS4, all masks fell off and everyone collectively accepted the fact that paid online is shit but there's nothing we can do about it.

There isn't a single reasonable gamer who would not agree with Sony and MS dropping paid online. Clearly, MS and Sony won't, so as long as the fee isn't unreasonable, we'll continue to pay it because we're held hostage by the platform owners. An online fee isn't a sufficient reason alone to switch to PC.

Well I dont know over the span of 8 years thats 640 euro on top of 550 euro console and more expensive games. Its more convenient to play on console but it sure as hell the only remaining benefit.

Yes? Just like every other MP title on PC and console (barring F2P titles).

It's that way for Xbox titles as well. You'll be able to play FM next month online with no charge on PC but it will require XBL on console.

Probably because when people hear GAAS, they right away think about the F2P ones. And not paid ones like FIFA and COD. But for H2 I think a bunch of people thought it would be free because it's more of an indie budget game. How many people even bought H1 at $20? I dont think too many or else you would had heard about giant sales amounts. So if the franchise isnt a big seller and this game is PS5 and PC, why not try for F2P get tons of users and make the money on the back end mtx fees?

Imagine it will probably also be 20 Euro more expensive on Playstation 5 while sony has to give 30% on steam to valve. Do people really think this isnta bad look.

It'll be interesting what the price is because H1 launched way back for $20. But since then, the price is stable at $20, but the game is upgraded to deluxe editions by default.

So either H1 goes down to $10 and H2 is $20. Or H1 stays at $20 and H2 is $30 or $40. We'll see.

H2 was definitively more expensive to make. I expect it to be fullprice at 80 euro while 60 euro on pc.

One thing about Sony this gen is they arent afraid to launch for high prices unless they get major pushback. Destruction All Stars was originally at $70 game. And then got chopped. Returnal is not a full budget game but that sold for full price.

Given the look of H2 (good 3D graphics and Returnal as a benchmark), it'll probably be full price when in reality it should be half price. But who knows. Maybe it'll be $20 or $30.

Nobody consciously factors this into their highest priority considerations on platform choice. Ganers are focused mainly on their most immediate concerns, not costs over the next 8 years. They aren't corporate accountants.

Exactly. Lots of people in this thread are acting like it can't even be questioned, just because it has become the "norm" and that's troubling.

Amen to that. Most people dont focus on anything in life.

In the MS credit card thread, we were all having laughs and discussion at the 32% interest rate. There are basic cards that offer 15% (I've seen them). So for anyone in a debt bind, do a low rate card or do line of credit which is even lower.

But people will choose 20-30% cards despite having a balance they have trouble paying off because they get teased by the whopping 1% back at gas stations kind of thing.

Do you think? Well I think its financially responsible to pay attention to longterm costs to effectively use your bought product but maybe that's just me..

You say that but PC gaming can be more expensive overall due to the higher cost of building a gaming capable PC.

Nobody wants to hear you have to pay to play multiplayer, it’s a bad habit Microsoft created and PC is conquering that narrative.

Is it tho? How many people have all consoles+all subs+higher game costs. Longterm is more expensive expect when you only play like 1 or 2 games a year.

Not really. It's not a F2P game. PS5 is cheaper than a high end PC. Paying to play online has been a thing in the console world for many years.

I don't see the issue.

Mad how everyone is conditioned to paying for online on console. I fucked that shit off years ago, absolute piss take init!

It is and you're 100% correct. But that's not the point. Many many many people just aren't financially literate at all.

It's blows my mind that people are willing to pay over $1000 for a GPU, on top of having to pay the increased electric bill for pulling in excess of 1000W at the wall.

I mean, its been like this 2013 for PS and longer for Xbox. Not sure if Nintendo does it because I dont play there games online.

Heres some information for you……. You also get some games every month….

This thread is kind of pointless. Of course nobody on PC will be paying to play MP and paying to play multiplayer has always been fucking ridiculous. Before I moved over to PC it was one of those yearly costs that I always really despised paying, but had no real choice if I wanted to play Halo with friends (or whatever game it was at the time). Sony and MS will never move away from that stupid model because I'm sure it's very lucrative for them and now it's just something that players have just accepted after years of paying it.

Oh and the arguments about maintaining servers, keeping games online and other things are just wrong. Steam and applications on PC have been doing this forever and it never cost PC players any additional funds (outside of MMO games).

I said can be, not is always. But I bet if often is.

Well sure but you also get more for your money. Better graphics, mods and all xbox and PlayStation exclusives. Well if you own both consoles that's enough of a budget to get a combareable console experience on your pc. So I bet more often people pay more to play on consoles.
