Hello There, Racists!

Hi, I'm black. I did pretty well just ignoring the idiots. There is a time to fight...but surely not like this.

I take huge issue with the idea that, through the internet, a generation of kids are growing up thinking that it's okay to spew this garbage for the world to see. If we don't actively and passionately expose and shame them, what else should be done? Just say "Well shucks, that ain't nice" and roll with the punches?

Please I live in RI and I see that shit daily.

I've never seen "Don't re-nig" in my town, but I did see it in the redneck part of the county (San Diego) to the east just before the election.
I actually had a hard time processing it out of context the first time I saw it on GAF.

"...renig..."
"You mean 'renege'? Renege on what?"
"No, 'renig'."
"?"
"Renig"
/googles "Ooooooooooooooooh"

Same way I handled my two year olds. Smile, nod, ignore unless it's harmful. You're welcome.

Problem is, in cases like this it's easy to not recognize the harm until it's too late.

I'm sure a lot of blacks were just smiling and nodding 100 years ago too... right up until they got a noose around their neck.

and just for shits and giggles...

I'm willing to bet that the majority of people shaming these asshats, aren't even black. Its just a whats right issue. You can't say stupid shit online, and there is no way to protect you from publishing your fucketry. Some dude was threatening to call Amir0x's job for his shit on gaf, remember? All information that he gave up on gaf. It happens when your info is out there. Its almost a natural reaction that the internet does.

The police chief that fired the pepperspray on those girls... 4chan found him out in like 3 hours.

Why are people up in arms about these little racist cunts saying racist shit, and getting shit for it? Thats what we here are all used to. But this time its different because you want me to believe that some kid saying Hang a nigger by the rope, misspoke?

He didn't cast judgment but the Civil Rights Movement was still about highlighting where discrimination is still happening. Racism wasn't ignored. Your history is fucking flawed.

No your interpretation of MY hietory if flawed. The minute you point a finger it's a fight. Why not try to educate instead?

Man, I'm glad they made this tumblr . Should do this for all racists; blow their faces up all over the web so people can see. Good shit.

MLK and Civil Rights Activists still shone a light on people being fucked up. I don't see your comparison.

Talking about this stuff and highlighting it is exactly what the Civil Rights Movement was about and yet you're talking about just keeping quiet.

I feel bad for the kids who will think it's okay to not take a stand against bigotry and racism. There's no place for it, never has nor will be.

Who do you even know to educate without awareness of racism to begin with? When you have people convinced we're in a post-racist world and don't even want to discuss that it is still an ever present problem, you can point to this tumblr and say "right here." We're still not close to even educating people about racism because we're stuck on "it's not a problem."

I'd rather convert 1 then scream at a thousand.

My dislike for "kids" being shamed on the internet is far smaller than my disdain for racists.

Some idiots learn the hard way. Life goes on. Eidan already said most of my personal stance.

The only can of worms here is potential impostering, imo.

Hay guise let's just ignore racism! It'll all go away.

*passive-agressively responds to suggestions on how to deal with it solely because the poster in question is white*

Dude, explain to me how you, CommonSense, would prevent the internet from going internet, and exposing these racist people with their own public information? Its not like the NAACP put up the tumblr. Nor did they fund the original Gawker/Jezebel article about it.

Education is great, 1 on 1. However half these kids said that their accounts were hacked, and they didn't say the racist tweets...

If I post some ridiculous shit on Gaf, and leave my phone number & home address, why should I expect to be protected from my own stupidity?

But to your point. Shaming did cause a spotlight to be put on these people. Their parents were informed, Jobs were informed, as well as their schools. All that have made statements, disavowed the actions of the people and claimed to try to help them/go over the rules again.

So win win yeah?

No offense but fuck you, what the hell would you know about it?

Yeah I haven't dealt with lewd comments about a wet t-shirt contest yo. I understand the need to keep on walking. I don't understand the inability to recognize when others want to call it out and shaming the people focusing a spotlight.

Fight the cause...not the conduit. This will breed more haters than help thr cause.

Is this not what you said you would do?

Shame is a perfectly acceptable form of education in regards to hate speech and over vile forms of ignorance, it's not the nicest way, but it has a bite, and that stays in people's minds.

Sex offenders are required to knock on the doors of houses and tell people of their sordid past offenses when they move into a neighborhood. It protects people, and grieves the offenders. We should have a similar program for racists.

People have a freedom of speech. Yes, they might use that freedom for awful things, but it's still their right. We shouldn't be attacking people for exercising their right to free speech. Just ignore it, and if they have no audience to speak to, they'll shut up.

Absolute bullshit.
You're free to (more or less) say what you want and not face legal consequences.
Others have the right to call you out on your shit, shun you, etc.

This is good not because it's public shaming or because it's condemning people for racism, but because it reminds people that saying things online isn't like making throwaway comments to your friends offline. People need to learn that when you put things online, they can be permanently tied to your name.

The cause is the conduit. Society is a self-referential organism. People making comments like this breed more comments -- shaming and criticizing those comments creates a chilling effect that reduces them. It's pretty straightforward psychology.

Fight the cause...not the conduit.

You're asking the impossible.

The cause of racism is ignorance, experience, or demographics. There is no way you or any other black could fight the cause, as you'd probably get arrested in Arizona for looking illegal on your first stop.

What is actually realistic, is for people who can educate these people; Life Experience/Parents/Teachers/Employers. Having the ability to see where these kids are going wrong, and correct their course. And that is exactly what happened with this shaming.
Yes, putting them on blast on the Internet is going too far.

sarcasm?

Freedom of speech. Freedom to be publicly embarrassed and pilloried for being a fucking cunt. Fair's fair.
Exactly.

Freedom of speech is not without consequences.

Why are some of these people making these moronic remarks also appear to be fans of rap music, dress like black rappers and whatnot?

Anyways, we had the Obama supporters who threatened to riot if Romney won. Stupidity comes on both sides of the political spectrum.

I think this one is not that bad, she is just reacting to the coments of other people =P

I really hope it is only that...
That's what I thought when I came across this one. It could be misinterpreted. Let's hope that's the case.

If I spent my days yelling at every racist I saw I would never leave my town. A confident smile and eye contact is sometimes all it takes to change an opinion. We must show we are not going down to their level.

Exactly. Say what you want by exercising your right to free speech, but my personal right to free speech gives me and others the ability to call you out on your ass-hattery.

It's not just some magic laser shield for saying whatever you want -- it goes both ways, and a lot of people just don't get that for some reason.

This is good not because it's public shaming or because it's condemning people for racism, but because it reminds people that saying things online isn't like making throwaway comments to your friends offline. People need to learn that when you put things online, they can be permanently tied to your name.

This is an important lesson for people to learn too. People tend to forget that the internet is essentially written in ink, not pencil (yeah I quoted Social Network, so what, wanna fight about it?).

How is collecting their PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF HATE "getting down to their level"?

How does one separate the racist (individual) from the racism (behavior)?

MLK's Letter from Birmingham

The clergymen also disapproved of the immense tension created by the demonstration. To this, King affirmed that he and his fellow demonstrators were using nonviolent direct action in order to cause tension that would force the wider community to face the issue head on. They hoped to create tension: a nonviolent tension that is needed for growth. King responded that without nonviolent forceful direct actions, true civil rights could never be achieved.

The letter includes the famous statement "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere", as well as quotes the words of Chief Justice Earl Warren, spoken in 1958 at the University of Cincinnati School of Law: "[J]ustice too long delayed is justice denied".

As I said earlier, social media has an amplifying effect. This means that there should be more urgency to tackle racist behavior head on. This tumblr site is the tension that is necessary to for the wider community to face the issue head on.

Who said anything about you having to do this irl. This is why I was mentioning that I understand some people just want to go about their day. You're going out of your way to shame the guy pointing a spotlight on racism on twitter. Seems to me you want to ignore it everywhere and on your terms. That's not how you deal with ignorance.

These people are not commenting behind a privacy wall, nor are they hiding their identities - rather they are using their names and faces to state their opinions on a public open platform. Pointing to these is fair game.

In the Facebook election fallout thread, Gaffers would often hide the names of those commenting presumably because they did so behind a privacy setting where only their friends could view their posts. Trying to collect information on the identity of those people would be, in contrast, wrong.

I read thru all the posts and I'm honestly shocked at how many of them were advocating or threatening assassination. I hope the Secret Service is reading this blog and taking notes.

I think you're confused on what internet shaming is...........................?

Again, remember the NYPD police chief that pepper sprayed the shit out of those girls? He was shamed via the internet. You do something stupid on the net, people figure it out. And its even that more easier when you give up all your public information on your twitter feed.
