Hello There, Racists!

Who said anything about you having to do this irl. This is why I was mentioning that I understand some people just want to go about their day. You're going out of your way to shame the guy pointing a spotlight on racism on twitter. Seems to me you want to ignore it everywhere and on your terms. That's not how you deal with ignorance.

You're giving them what they want...attention.

wtf 16 year olds should be one of the last people to be racist. American education system is failing them or they have really awful parents. Probably both.

I don't think media portrayals help. I was thinking about how I grew up in a diverse area but there was still Fresh Prince, Sister Sister, Family Matters, etc to bridge the gap for others. What is there now?

Haha that's why stuff got closed or they claimed to be hacked.

These kids mostly aren't Anne Coulter or radio shock jocks. Throw enough shame their way and they'll get it.

That's what I thought when I came across this one. It could be misinterpreted. Let's hope that's the case.

The characters that can't be displayed on the picture are the emoji "tears of joy" and "handgun".

This comment I suspect was racist.

Now THIS is something I can get behind. Nothing short of poetic justice.

Nothing reinforces your stance of being morally superior like going on a witch hunt.
Its a little different when people are holding up signs saying "I'm a fucking witch" and screaming into loudspeakers. They are broadcasting their views to the world - they can't blame anyone else for listening. Twitter/Facebook/Social Media tool X are not private chats between a tight knit community. They are public broadcasts, in stored, index-able and searchable form.

I love this because it mixes my disgust of racism with my annoyance at people's irresponsible use of social media.

Thinking about it, I do wonder if putting them to "shame" online will even help or make it even worse. They might not be as active with their racial remarks online, instead they might bottle all that shit inside and let it build up even more. In the end, only the individual can truly make that change. Society can frown upon and stand against it like it should but that in itself is not enough for true change I believe.

I read thru all the posts and I'm honestly shocked at how many of them were advocating or threatening assassination. I hope the Secret Service is reading this blog and taking notes.

I'm sure they have plenty of computers sifting through web sites for that.

Fight the cause...not the conduit. This will breed more haters than help thr cause.

How does one separate the racist (individual) from the racism (behavior)?

MLK's Letter from Birmingham

The clergymen also disapproved of the immense tension created by the demonstration. To this, King affirmed that he and his fellow demonstrators were using nonviolent direct action in order to cause tension that would force the wider community to face the issue head on. They hoped to create tension: a nonviolent tension that is needed for growth. King responded that without nonviolent forceful direct actions, true civil rights could never be achieved.

The letter includes the famous statement "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere", as well as quotes the words of Chief Justice Earl Warren, spoken in 1958 at the University of Cincinnati School of Law: "[J]ustice too long delayed is justice denied".

As I said earlier, social media has an amplifying effect. This means that there should be more urgency to tackle racist behavior head on. This tumblr site is the tension that is necessary to for the wider community to face the issue head on. This is not a witch hunt...witches aren't real, racism is and still continues to be a cancer in society.

You'd have to hope that someone in their life goes the extra mile of educating them on why it's wrong past the surface of shame. Shame though is a step towards recognizing that it's not decent behavior towards others, even if they were to bottle it up.

Wait what? Witch hunts are only witch hunts because witches don't exist? That doesn't even make sense! Why does it matter if witches don't exist! If you're going hunting for witches then it's a witch hunt! Ducks exist, and when people go hunting for ducks you don't hear people saying, "oh, that's not really a duck hunt because ducks actually exist." You can hunt something whether it exists or not! We have bigfoot hunters and ghost hunters, why not witch hunters!

They'll essentially just become their parents.

witch-hunt also witch hunt (wchhnt)
n. An investigation carried out ostensibly to uncover subversive activities but actually used to harass and undermine those with differing views.

The point is that the "witches" are usually red herrings. Not in this case.

Or to put it another way, you can't get on somebody's case for demonizing their opponents if their opponents are actually demons.

is that why a number of them closed their facebook/tweets and claimed they were hacked...?

I get where you're coming from. But on this issue, with this specific technology, you're way off.

And if they actually were hacked, what then? How would one go about resolving this issue with a nameless, faceless, completely unaccountable website?

??

A witch hunt is when you claim people who are not witches are so that you can kill them without repercussion.

A witch hunt is a mob or individual going after someone innocent of a crime. Derp.

right, and since they didn't exist, the church just killed women....

it doesn't make sense in regards to tweeting racist comments and posting your public information on your account.

The entire post should be deleted as it keeps derailing everyone.

In modern terminology 'witch-hunt' has acquired usage referring to the act of seeking and persecuting any perceived enemy, particularly when the search is conducted using extreme measures and with little regard to actual guilt or innocence. It is used whether or not it is sanctioned by the government, or merely occurs within the "court of public opinion".

it just doesn't add up. It is stupid.

As an aside I remember reading in a Gender Studies book how most witches were older widows and their lands were basically taken as a result of the hunt. So in essence there is some of your motivation to do so other than just hysteria.

Could you have picked a worse avatar?...her shoulders are creepy :-)

Indeed...most witch hunts were actually land grabs or cheap divorces. True Story.

What the hell is "coon" ? Never heard of it.

A racial slur. I've heard it a lot. I always assumed it had something to do with raccoons, but apparently it's from a Spanish word for slave pens.

It's really sad to see that a lot of these racist tweets are from young people, likely below the age of 25. It's like their racism is still in the larval stage with the potential to grow into something much worse....

Because they are incredibly selfish and won't help out anyone or do anything unless they personally benefit from it. They will lie and falsify results in order to avoid doing more work, etc. This applies to 95% of Chinese researchers that my wife has encountered according to her.

I'll concede that I've worked with Chinese researchers who are either selfish or just completely socially inept, but it just sounds like your wife has terrible coworkers.

internet racism vs internet vengeance

whoever wins: we all look like petty, socially underdeveloped manchildren

So internet racism =/= Real life racism, even though it's done under real name and with the help of social media is able to reach many more people?

And pointing out racists, how filthy their actions are and publicly opposing these disgusting acts are now representative of the people acting like "manchildren"? And this is "vengeance"?

Where do you get off on calling others this BS?

Not in the least. They posted stupid things on social networks, that doesn't mean they deserve to be shamed and ridiculed this way, no matter how fucking stupid or racist they are. I can't believe how many people have no problem with this, especially considering many like to point out their moral high ground.

They put these things out in the open. Tweeting is the electronic equivalent of shouting said information on a street corner. If you want freedom of speech and express such opinions openly, you really can't be upset when said opinion is used against you.

They are commenting on the race of the black president. That is what the story is about. Think about it.

Yes, I know that. Comments about our black leader isn't the only display of racism and I'd expect a "hellothereracists" to be targeting all not some.

Southern prejorative for african-americans (says the guy from the south).

You've lived such an innocent life, beast.

Yea, that's one thing I never understood. I understand the usage of word, "nigger" because it's a mutation of an actual word, "negro" which means the colour, black to be used as a pejorative. But "coon".. where does that originate from? Racoon? Perhaps I should do a little digging because in all honesty the first time I actually saw and then heard the word was during the Treyvon Martin case.

uh, no. tweeting the equivalent of barely legible graffiti carved into the seat of a public bench.

Not really, because you don't know who is behind the keyboard, and that they are who they say they are. Verified Twitter accounts are more likely to be legitimate, but are still succeptabe to hacking. Unverified accounts could literally be anyone.

For the record, from what I can tell by looking at the accounts, number of tweets, Facebook images matching etc. most or all of these accounts don't seem like impostors, and some proudly own their comments... But I'm still not comfortable with the (unknown)?source of the collation, the verification methods, there not being a way to challenge false claims, and the posting of minors information.

I can't even get offended at coon. It's too comical, like the person is trying too hard to be racist.
