Help me pick an MMO

I played a shit ton of FF14 but stopped mostly due to the shitty guild I was with (to be fair I was late to raid nights pretty often). I might come back eventually.

Are there any MMOs that have good end game raids (as in they have good/fun party mechanics) outside of WoW and FF14? Those are really the only ones I know of and I'm not aware and can't find good info on others.

Once Wildstar fixes it's bugs and does away with it's chore of an attunement it actually has some of the best (if not the best) raids out there.

But just not right now. You have to grind rep, then clear all the hard mode dungeons in a certain amount of time, then kill 12 (I think 12) world bosses, THEN you can step into the first raid. It's mind boggling.

Wow is still definitely the best all around experience for someone that is looking for it.

GW is B2P but completely shallow.
FF14 is decent but the gameplay is just a worse wow clone aside from the quest story, which I think is highly worth it once, but otherwise it's just slower, less deep wow combat.
SWTOR is worth playing through once or twice for stories, they're a lot of fun. Also very wow clone-y.

At this point, NEARLY every mmo you play is a wow clone tbh, and most of them do absolutely 0 things better. You're not a complete newbie so you may be best off just using trials for all of these, and seeing if you can tell what you like/dislike about a game, it can be tough if you don't know what you're looking for since these are RARELY even remotely as deep as you'll eventually find when you scratch the surface only, but what else can you do?

The GAF hiveminds for GW and FF14 are probably the strongest, while the wow community is strong but don't all play together. If money isn't an issue then whatever, if it is definitely invest in trial periods first. See an example of group content in every game since that's mostly important, and go from there.

I think you should just stick with XIV. :P

WoW used to be great but I haven't played in a long time so I can't really recommend it and WildStar I've heard good things about but never tried.

There's a reason why people always go back to wow ( this is coming from someone that has played every mmo and hadn't been subbed in wow since December ), there's just something about it

Honestly you can't really go wrong with any of the games you listes in the OP. I'll give you some opinions on the games that I've played and have reached the level cap in.

WoW has the best max level content by far. However the general leveling experience is pretty boring and generic by today's standards. I honestly think it still has the best "feeling" mmo combat. Newer mmo's that have more action oriented combat don't feel right to me. It just doesn't feel like attacks have any real weight or tactile feeling to them when I compare it to WoW.

SWToR has the best questing and storyline. Its actually quite a lot of fun to level up and experience the storyline for each class.

Guild wars 2 has the most interesting world to explore, and it highly encourages exploration. It's a lot of fun to just run around the world exploring and participate in the dynamic events. A lot of it for me has to do with how damned awesome the environment art in that game is. I absolutely love the style. Some of the PvP WvW content is very entertaining as well. Another big bonus for this game is that you don't need a subscription, and the cash shop is very fair.

I've treid to get into other MMO's but no other game can match the feel of the combat in WoW. Not even close really. WoW has the best end-game stuff too, and the most content by a mile.

You probably have already made up your mind but I'll throw my hat in for Star Wars: The Old Republic. It's a good game and it's got a lot of cool stuff coming down the pipe to cap off 2014. Check it out and see if you like it. If not, all you spent was just time and not $20 or more on something you might regret.

Personally I really like Rift. I really only want PVE and it does that great. There is always events going on and the community is pretty good.
For a Free To Play game it really is very good. I play it sometimes when the MMO urge comes along.

Go with GW2 it is on sale atm. Also there is no monthly sub and you can even convert in game gold to gems, so you don't have to buy anything for real money.

It has true action combat unlike TERA that looks you in animation. You can use most of the abilities without target, hit all enemies in front of you when u swing sword. No other AAA MMO i played has such a fluid combat and movement freedom. I tried to play ArcheAge beta and just cant play old tab target MMOs anymore after GW2. Everything feels so slow and limited.

Also its has like 3 huge parts.

World vs World massive pvp with castle sieges and 200+ players

structured PvP

and PvE open world with Personal story and Living world patches every 2 weeks.

Yes game has some problems but overall its gonna give you hundreds of hours of fun for your money.

OP I'll try to relay my experience.

I've played WoW to level 80 twice, SWTOR to 50 like 4 times, and GW2...for a couple days.

I feel like not playing WoW is akin to never playing Mario. You should experience this just to fill out your gamer cred. You're missing out on a legit phenomena.

That being said SWTOR is also really good. More importantly I enjoyed the questing, leveling, and the story in TOR far more than WoW. TOR is a lot more fast paced. TTK is lower. And its bloody Star Wars.

I didn't like GW2. I didn't like the gameplay I wasn't a fan of the story...it felt like it just wasn't good enough in every category. If I want better gameplay I play TERA. If I want better story I play TOR (or WoW) for that matter. If I want a shit ton of great content I play WoW. It was one of my most anticipated games too but I just couldn't stay interested.

Anyway if I had to recommend one it'd probably be WoW. TOR is free to play and you can try that when you need a break as it has a great story. In fact many WoW players take breaks with other MMOs when they get bored.

Nothing comes close to WOW, it is natural: more than 10 years in constant development with a huge studio and massive budget backing it up.

Even with its fuck ups, still nothing come close to wow.

Do you want to raid? If so, play WoW. If you're not into raiding, and the gear grid, GW2 is probably the friendliest option.

WoW is still king of the theme-park style MMOs. At max level the gameplay options outside of high level raiding are not very interesting at all, IMO, but this is by no means unique within the genre. If nothing else, you'll have a great time leveling in it though!

GW2

I played FFXI, but FFXIV doesn't click with me. I think GW2 is the reason for that. Best MMO experience I played by far. I did it with 2 friends and it was an amazing experience. Same 2 friends tried FFXIV ARR Beta and it doesn't click with them either.

Funny thing is, when GW2 launched we follows the Trinity mentality to great success despite what people say.

I was the Thief (Healer). My Friend was the Guardian (Tanker), and the other one is Ranger (DPS). Healing is basically reviving people from a Downed state. Thief is great for this cause they can cloak both person for a revive and heal. Cloaking allies heals them with my set up. Cloaking (Healing) also resets aggro to the only person visible. So if the RNG gets aggro I just Cloak (Heal) them and the aggro resets to the tank. THF have the Initiative system, not cool down. So I can spam cloaking field combo for them all day everyday.

The trinity works well enough that we finishes dungeons with only 3 of us since everyone raged quitted in the middle numerous times. It takes a lot of communication for it to work so I never do it with public party members. You have to stop attacking to stay cloaked, stand on the combo field, etc. So they dies a lot while we survives.

The same tactics works in World v World except with more difficulty since people are not dumb AI obvious.

Just because the system doesn't explicitly tell you how to trinity doesn't mean you can't do it.

In terms of end game content, WoW is definitely the way to go, but you'd obviously have to be ready to pay the suscription.

The OG Guild Wars plays fundementally different form all the other MMOs I have ever played, which is the reason why I still play it even after 7 years.

Verdict, best MMO ever made so far with the best story(ies).

Also, best music :)

FFXIV , Guild Wars 2 or WoW. (haha I thought you were asking for good MMOs)
Funny you have them all three already in your question.
If I had to choose I would say FFXIV.

My two cents: GW2 is amazing, and I'd rather play it even if it had a sub than any other even if all had no subs. That it's the opposite is just icing on the cake. The GAF guild is huge (regularly hitting the guild cap) and very active with guild events throughout the week.

GW2 is definitely not for everyone, but if it clicks with you, you won't need (or want) another MMO for many, many years. If it's on sale right now get it right away, even at full price it's a steal.

The GAF hiveminds for GW and FF14 are probably the strongest, while the wow community is strong but don't all play together.

Love your usage of terminology here, as if you felt that your avatar wasn't showing your bias strongly enough. :D

Do not play GW2 if you want to play WoW. The reason why people go back to WoW is that people are used to WoW's schematics and it's copied by many an MMO. GW2 is different. Hell, I consider it more of a beat 'em up with RPG mechanics.

With that said I'd be wary about certain posters here, some have been proven to be false in their attempts at labeling a game. :P

get LOTRO, my favourite MMORPG after WoW

enormous, beautiful world to explore, great instances and raids, grapics that still hold up nowadays, incredible soundtrack. Played it for five years straight, it's really fantastic

World of Warcraft was unbelievably tremendous... 10 years ago. It might still be okay but with the subscription cost and no nostalgia for it I would probably not go for it.

Old Republic is decent but very linear.

Guild Wars 2 is a like WoW in many ways, but without the fees.

Personally I'd say stick with FF14, it's pretty good.

WoW is a good place to start right now cause the expansion is coming towards the end of the year.

Final Fantasy XIV maybe, but gets very repetitive quite quickly.

I'd stick with FFXIV, you already have it plus depending on how long you've been away things have changed a bit. Just resub for a month, join us on Ultros maybe with a new character and see if it pulls you back in.

I think you should just stick with XIV. :P

WoW used to be great but I haven't played in a long time so I can't really recommend it and WildStar I've heard good things about but never tried.

WoW still is great(the best imo) and the new xpac looks nice too. I've heard Wildstar compared to old school WoW BUT the game requires a great deal of commitment supposedly for the end game stuff. I've known a few people who got Wildstar but gave up on it because requires too much time. I haven't played the game personally just going but what I've heard others say.

I've never really liked the "WoW has so much more content" argument, since in reality it's only a mere fraction of said content that's still relevant and inhabited by the players. You're not going to see a good chunk of the older worlds leveling up nor partake in their raids. The majority of vanilla and old expansion content is relegated to being more or less museums.

The game mechanics and their feel are rock solid though and compare favorably even to modern counterparts such as TESO.

Played a ton of WoW and Guild Wars back in the day and recently felt like getting into MMOs again, so I decided to give a bunch of Asian F2P games a spin. Got to say, Tera isn't half bad, and Blade & Soul is quite fun and beautiful (if you don't mind Kim Hyung-Tae's designs). Vindictus and PSO2 are pretty nice for what they are as well. Though GAF sadly hates F2P games, which means there are either no guilds at all or they're very small or dead.

That isn't true because gw2 gaf is very active

How is this even remotely true? I liked GW2 for a few months like most people, but the game is nothing like WoW.

The OP has admitted he hasn't really played MMO's. I've played plenty of MMO's and in the grand scheme of things, WoW and GW2 are not all that different. Similair art style, simlair tone, similair type of fantasy world, class based roles, keybound skills you cycle between. Of course they have many differences but these are what the average player will see and think. When you think of MMORPG's over the years: FFXI, City of Heroes, Matrix Online, World of Warcraft, DCUO, ESO, Star Trek Online, Old Republic, Ultima Online - Guild Wars 2 is pretty comparable to Warcraft.

Tried FF again with the free trial and I still can't past the invisible walls, loading screens, and long ass GCD. I can't recommend Wildstar either in its current state, the endgame is terrible.

Try WoW or GW2.

I've recently got the itch to start playing an MMO, but I don't know where to start. The only MMO I've ever played for more than an hour or two is FFXIV on PS4. I've been looking at re-upping that, buying GW2, subbing to WoW, or playing The Old Republic.

I already own FF, so I'd just need to buy game time. I've wanted to play WoW for a while, mostly just because it's such a phenomenon that I kind of want in on. GW2 is appealing because there's no sub fee. And I was only looking at SWTOR because I really like Star Wars. I mostly just want a game that will give me good value for my money, not get old quick, will feel like an huge adventure rather than a chore, and has a good community here on Gaf that I can be a part of.

So what should I go with Gaf?

Based on your comments, it sounds like Guild Wars 2 would be worth looking into;

"A good value for my money"
No subscription fees, currently 50% off until August 24th. If you're concerned about "pay 2 win", the in-game cash shop sells only cosmetic (armor skins, mini pets) and convenience items like extra character slots (you get five initially), extra storage and boosters that make activities like crafting and gathering more effective.

"Not get old quick"
The game has a feature called the "Living World" that is basically set up like a television show; over the span of a season which lasts several months, they update the game every two weeks, adding to an ongoing storyline that permanently changes the game world (entire towns are leveled, zones radically altered, etc.), introduces new features (dungeons, world events) and rewards. Something new is always just around the corner. One downside is that before the current season, they didn't have a way to replay each episode, so some of the content was temporary (though the best parts have been brought back).

"Will feel like a huge adventure rather than a chore
Because the game wasn't built with a subscription in mind, there's very little in the way of time sinks. Leveling is a breeze because everything but standing still awards XP, and because the amount of XP required to level plateaus around level 30 it doesn't feel like an uphill battle. There's no gear grind, so you're not constantly forced to play to keep up with the Jonses (players who have taken months or even a year off from the game have come back and picked up right where they left off). You're even automatically leveled to 80 for World vs. World and PvP (you're also fully geared and have your core skill and traits unlocked for this last one).

"has a good community here on Gaf"
Not only is the community here on GAF great (community thread is here), but the way the game is designed makes it much easier to play with others. You can belong to up to five guilds at once, you can temporarily transfer (called "Guesting") to any server in the region for free (other games would charge you $25 per character to permanently move) and because there aren't any factions (i.e. Horde vs. Alliance, Exiles vs. Dominion) you can't accidentally pick the 'wrong side' and not be able to play with the guild or your friends. The only real restrictions are that you can't play with other regions (NA can't play with EU and vice versa) and because the World vs. World mode pits servers against each other, you can only play that mode for your home team.

Hope this was helpful, feel free to swing by the community thread or PM me if you have any more questions.

WoW will always be the best MMO that is hotkey based and sees itself as an action game.

Nothing has ever come close to it's fast gameplay and smooth animations.

I've been having a lot of fun with FFXIV. And I like that the game is still fairly new, much room for expansions and improvements.

Seriously, WoW is the only answer. Anyone who says otherwise just wants more people to play the same second-tier MMO as them.

Edit: I have played a lot of MMOs. They can be fun for a while but ultimately feel like a gimped WoW.

From the games you've listed WoW is the best. GW2 was a huge disapointment for me and most of the people I play with, Old Republic is decent but the F2P model isn't fair enough, they charge for some pretty stupid things (you need to pay to hide your helmet). Rift is another good F2P MMO, can level to max without spending anything, though if you enjoy the game you'd want to purchase the extra souls.

If you've not played WoW before then go for that, should be cheap to get everything and it's the best MMO out there, expansion is out soon too.
get LOTRO, my favourite MMORPG after WoW

enormous, beautiful world to explore, great instances and raids, grapics that still hold up nowadays, incredible soundtrack. Played it for five years straight, it's really fantastic

It still requires those quest packs to level right?

Just got back into WoW myself a few days ago. Would definitely recommend getting into it now as the latest expansion will be out in a couple months

He said a game that wasn't a chore, didn't get old quick, and had a large GAF community. Wildstar is the exact opposite of those things.
Sadly I agree with this,I LOVED the game in beta. 2 weeks after hitting max level with my medic I was pretty much done with the game. It has to be the first mmo where I didn't have at least 2 max level toons

Second tier in terms of current players maybe and money behind it...

Anyway, try the free games to start with. It might turn out you don't actually like MMO's in general and it's just FF that has hit you. I know quite a few players who were in the same boat.

Try Star Wars, try Rift. I'm actually surprised no one has mentioned RIft. By far the best f2p model of any MMO and one of the most polished and varied games out there.

I'm surprized only one other person here has mentioned Neverwinter. I've tried a lot of MMO's, and its just one of the few that I played for more then a couple weeks.

Combat is fun for once, quest feel like they have more purpose and the Forgotten Realms setting has a ton of lore behind it,

There is also user created content, you can play dungeouns and quests designed by other people or creat some yourself.

It is F2P, but you can get by just fine without spending a cent. You can even trade astral dimaonds earned in game for ZEN money used for micro transactions, so anything is pretty much in your reach without busting out the credit card if your okay with waiting and working for it,

In short:

Get World of Warcraft if you want a big playerbase and loads of dev made content and are okay with a montly fee.
Get Guild Wars 2 if you want a really fun game that only have to pay once for and be done with it,
Get Rift if you love WoW gameplay, but don't want to pay for it,
Get Neverwinter if you want to play a really fun game for free with tons of user created content, and don't mind promps to buy things from time to time.

Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy 14 have thier place as well, but I don't think the purchase price+plus montly fee is worth it for the content offered right now,

I can't speak for star wars but between WoW and GW2 if you want end game raids with tier armor and the holy trinity I would go Wow.

I currently play GW2 so I am a bit bias but I enjoy the story, combat, pvp more then WoW. I do miss raids but GW2 has quick dungeons and you don't have the need to log on every day as there is no power creep.
