Wow, I thought LoL's community was harsh as it was. I'll probably stick with LoL if it's more in depth as well because I'm pretty bad at LoL at the moment.

Would like to learn the game but I'm a total beginner/noob in this game so far.
Experience is the best you can do to learn this game, just play as many games as you can and learn the heroes, their strenghts, weaknesses etc.
Also try to do your first games with the recommended items for each hero, so you don't get confused with this, you can learn all the items after you have learned the basics of the game.

Instead of the word "harsher" I would probably just say that it is much more competitive, and then yes people of course take it more seriously and tend to get upset when they lose because of someone else's mistakes haha.

I'm so bad at this game, but I'm getting better. It's bad when my team mates rage at me, but it's also really funny. HoN seems to have a very angry community.

I've played a few games as Plague Rider; what would be another easy character to play as or use for a moderate noob?

In other words yes it's much harsher. One of the least friendly video gaming communities there is IMO.

Demented Shaman and Accursed are great noobish characters. Both are primarily support heroes that don't need a ton of items. You won't be the star of the show or anything, but you will still be a great contribution to your team.

Very much so, which is ironic since the game itself is really awesome.

It's great at what it does, but it's like the perfect storm of nerd rage risk factors in an online game. Insane learning curve combined with extremely high team dependence, and personal character build goals being ruined by a bad game, makes for some very strong words over the internet when somebody isn't carrying their weight.

That's just one word. :)

And the point of my post was that PERSONALLY I would not use the word "harsh" because I typically play competitive types of games like HoN and am used to that. I'm not saying I am a pro by any means at anything, but when you play in the higher end of skill level most people will find it not enjoyable, no matter what the game is, if they aren't up to the challenge. Winning is much more rewarding after hard fought games. So if you are a casual gamer then HoN might not be the game for you, but it is a GREAT game for those who enjoy working together with teammates. It is one of the best games for competitive play if you have a bunch of people who know what they are doing.

who is this?

No idea. The picture was posted on the HoN facebook page a few days ago with no further info.

On the topic of starting heroes: I'd start with an easy support hero, like Glacius or Demented Shaman. If you see a hero that you want to get into, look up if it's a "carry" hero, i.e. a hero that becomes very good at mid/end-game if properly farmed (lots of xp and gold). The carry's job is to carry the team to victory, hence the name. I'd advice to stay away from these in the beginning as it puts a lot of responsibility on you to farm well.

Glacius isn't a newb hero. He has poor survivability and horrible base damage. If you don't know how to play, you will feed like a fiend with him.

Oh I totally agree, but when you are in the zone, it is one of the best gaming expereinces I have had in recent memory. At the same time, I have raged a few times when I'm playing on a terrible team (or against mint :x)

He's a newb hero because he doesn't need to be in the heat of the battle, or rather shouldn't. When I play Glacius I usually just stay behind my teammates and sometimes blink in for the ultimate, but that's pretty much it. You don't need great micro with him, just spam your nuke. ;)

That's hard to do for newbs though - to know where its safe to be. Honestly, when I'm glacius its NEVER safe as he is a target for both ganking and team fights due to his usually low hp and survivability. That said, he is a great hero to have with you in a lane for his slow + immobilize.

Play some GAF clan scrims, we won't bite. Also play unranked games where things are more laid back.

I may just do that, I have some friends who play LoL currently and that's really the reason I play that game. DotA is fun, but if I had no one I knew playing the game, then the community would be the reason I most likely would quit that game (LoL).

I'll mention Heroes of Newerth and if they switch, I'll probably play with GAF and unranked matches. HoN looks a lot more complex than LoL though, so I'll probably be absolutely terrible.

Then again, just because you're playing Devourer and you've got yourself heart doesn't mean you're gonna be any better at surviving if you're a newb, since you will be in the heat of the battle, where you need to be on your toes. A Glacius can stay behind. I agree that knowing how to position yourself is hard when you're only just starting out, but "staying behind your team" can't be THAT hard to understand. ;)

And like you say, he's a great hero for doing.. nothing. The mana regen early on is invaluable and will help everyone level and farm faster.

Ok, I'm going to discuss this. Glacius is a long ranged, slow&freeze caster. He is a ganking, semi-initiating hero. You give him HP items like fortified bracelets. Staying behind your team is what pisses me off the most, especially if you're a hero who has a target stun.

So you think Glacius should be in the middle of the battle where he'll die instantly? I'm not disagreeing with you, just wondering how you think.

He should initiate ganks or fights and die as the carry cleans up. If you manage to get a Portal key and a Shrunken head late game then you will lower your risk of dying no doubt but yeah this guy dies a lot. This guy used to be my favorite support hero/baby sitter but now its Hellbringer.

Deaths are a part of playing a support hero, mostly because they're squishy and/or get targeted first. Don't expect a nice kill-death ratio: you'll probably get a lot of assists but it's your carry's job to finish them off.

I think this is a pretty cool game, but the community sucks ass. All you get to hear as a new guys is "lol noob" "kick him he's a noob" and shit you don't even understand.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
On Glacius.

I agree with Mint in that a well built glacius (blink + bracers or bloodstone if you're farming well) should be a semi initiator near or at the front of your lines to chase and bait.

But it's really hard to pull off (without dying every encounter) and you have to be extremely good with his animation to farm up the items necessary so he's not a hero I'd ever recommend for starting out.

Why lower Polly's attack range christ, he was never much of a harasser.

i'd also say that overall HoN is a more polished game graphically and in terms of pre-game UI and lobby/matchmaking.

personally i see the depth in HoN as a minus though. overly complicated for my tastes.

It is written pretty oddly though, in that it should "increased from 500 to 550."

It's about par for Idejder though, he's pretty awful at writing patchnotes; the beta-beta forum combs them over for these kinds of things and makes corrections before he posts them. :lol

It's very much a positive in the long term...keeps you engaged as you learn more of the game every time you play.

Got into a easy mode game today, like the only 2nd time I played this mode, the last time was around 5 months ago and I didn't like the outcome of everyone picking agility heroes so when I saw the line up we were facing I was like FUUUU. So I said to my self just push and take out towers and finish early and to my surprise I was shocked how good defiler turned out with doing that.

Once you're level 25 extra experience will kinda add on to your usual per rate. That and it's EM, so the add on bonus will be high.

Oh yeah, forgot it was EM. I guess it makes a little more sense then.

Seriously guys? EM? Baptism by fire, bitches! I think I'm getting better with Plague Rider (hint: It all has to do with knowing when and where to throw down the ulti) and I think I might try Magmus or D sham.

In regards to APM, mine jumped close to one hundred (from around forty) as soon as I learned how to deny and last hit effectively. I think that early-game click spamming is what boosts all but the most pro APMs.
