My brother died of cancer this past summer, non related to smoking. What I don't understand is why anyone would want to inflict that pain onto themselves and their families.

I am obviously very biased on the subject, so smokers... or people like me, please join in and discuss!

Yeah, smoking fucks you up and cuts years off your life. I don't know why anyone would start, or not make an attempt to stop.

smoking is for people who are superficial and want to look "cool".

That all it comes down to. Anyone who started smoking did it to be impress.

Wow, sorry for your loss, Karish. : / We're still trying to get my mother to quit (she's 52 years old), but it's like a crutch for her to deal with stress etc., so it's very difficult.

At the hospital I worked at over the summer, I happened to be doing some employee filing for the nurse manager, and when I came across a certain file I asked whether I should keep it, because it had insufficient documentation; she said "oh, you can throw it out, she's not with us anymore-- I was so upset". So I said, "oh, did she get fired?", and she said, "no, she died-- lung cancer". I said "oh god, that's terrible-- how old was she?", and she said "27 years old". I was obviously shocked, so I asked whether she smoked; the reply came: "like a chimney".

Really terrible stuff... :(

All it takes to quit is a little effort and one of those patches. Some think it's a waste of money, but it's about the price of ten packs of cigs. Most people do it to look cool or to calm down, but they don't look cool smoking outside in 30 degree weather and it's a stimulant. Mental weakness, plus it stinks, literally.

Smoking is cool... if you ignore the damage to your health, high costs, smell, etc. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, it does look cool, but I could never justify the money or the drop in health for that. I'll always be a runner, and smoking is absolutely not something that goes with running.

aesthetically speaking i like the idea of tobacco as a sacred plant whose smoke summons and pleases spirits. then there are hardened sailors the world over huddled on cold rainy prows cursing the gods of the sea sucking on their calabash. and solid snake's bum cubby.

but then i don't smoke so what do i know.

People smoke because its a drug and some people just do drugs.

Hey Karish, I'm with you on this one. This semester I realized I should stop encouraging others to smoke, I've never had a problem not smoking and I assumed it should be like that for everyone. Now I'm out to support my firends who are quiting.

How old was he Karish? I've had my grandparents die from smoking when I was very young, 5 or 6. Both of em from my mom's side so I hardly knew them. But my uncle, their son, and my brother smokes. Well, my uncle has stopped actually and hasn't for close to a year now but it's pretty scary when you actually stop and think about how much time's gone by and how long they smoked.

I don't smoke but I wish people would just mind their own business when it comes to people who do. I mean, there are a million things that people do that are bad for them. Do you know how irritating it would be to have some self-righteous prick nagging you about health risks whenever you go into McDonald's? At this point, everyone is aware of how bad these things are for you. Shit, ignoring all the television commercials and news reports, I would assume that sucking smoke into your lungs would be harmful in the first place. If they still choose do them, for whatever reason, why must you try to make them feel guilty for their choice? It really bothers me whenever someone I know takes out a cigarette and then has to contend with a bunch of negative looks and comments. Just mind your own business.

With some exceptions, it really is that these people are just personally bothered by the smell of smoke. They don't want to have to breath smoke when they're eating or what not. If that's the case, just say that. Don't come up with some bullshit about how you care about the person's health.

As others have said, there are many things in this world that are "bad for you". If you enjoy these things enough then it's really up to you to decide if it's worth it.

Here's a frightening statistic:

Non-smokers die every day.

I've never smoked a cigarette or cigar and really have no desire to. I could see why someone would smoke weed socially, but cigarettes just are not worth it.

My friend's aunt died of lung cancer and she wasn't a smoker, but her husband was. So yeah, it's like those dorks that go around blasting their crappy music in cars. Most smokers do it as a social thing, and it eventually becomes a habit. My one desire is for the tobacco makers to put more cancerous materials in their cigs, so then it'll be even cooler to smoke because of the heightened risk.

It's your freedom and your right if you want to smoke, but don't force others to passively smoke. It's their right to live healthily.

Nothing pisses me off more than smokers who say "well if they don't like it they don't have to be there"... like smokers inherited the free fucking world. Just because you're a yellow fingered, bad smelling masochist that's accepted cancer as a foregone conclusion doesn't mean that we all have to be.

Smokers in bars, workplaces and things like that should be fucking shot. At the very least taken outside or to a designated area.

If someone eats McDonalds food around me for a few years, I'm not going to have any health problems because of it.

I watched my mom die of Lung Cancer at 49. It sounds much like White Man watching his father die, her cancer had spread into her bones and brain. I found out she had cancer a week to the day before she died. When they found out she had cancer, she smoked two more cigarettes, and never went home again.

This was over 8 years ago. I still smoke cigarettes. It's stupid, and I would recommend anyone here my story before starting. Here's hoping I quit before it's too late.

Yea, it's bad for you. I'm sure everyone who smokes knows this, it's nothing new. There's no need to tell people this anymore. It's very annoying when I'm smoking and someone goes "You smoke? Oh, you should stop, it's bad for you." It's sound almost like a knee jerk reaction from some people, seemingly unaware that I'm already aware that it's bad for me. But that's just a minor annoyance, although it happens alot. It's really those self righteous bastards that think they're my mom and lecture me about it, telling me how it does this and that, blah blah blah with a really condescending tone about it,those are the cunts I want to punch in the face. And also, there's people who like to proclaim they never smoked, well good for you, who gives a crap. Please don't be like that.

Well, when I was little my dad smoked around me all the time. When I was little it was fine. I even liked the smell of some brands. Over time it got worse, I developed asthma and associated chest/stomache cramps. By about 12 or 14 (when my parents separated) I was hyper sensitive to it. I got used to some fresh air at home after that, but then spending more than 30 minutes at my dad's smoke infested house caused me to throw up without fail each time. Now just walking by someone who is smoking (20 feet away, for a few seconds) gives me instant headaches and stomache aches. Cigarettes are poison to everyone around you. I don't care about smokers' health, because obviously neither do they, and I shouldn't have to go up to someone and tell them it's impolite to pollute my air. It's really pretty crappy to have to walk through a cloud of smoke (underneath the no smoking signs) at the entrance to every mall/theater/restaurant. If you have the decency to only smoke in the privacy of your own home, I hope you don't have any nonsmoking family members, because you're killing them too.

Do you know how funny that was to read with your current avatar? :lol Just playing...

Anyway, I couldn't care less if a person smokes or not...as long as it's no one living in my house, it's all good. I assume people are smart enough to read the fucking warning labels on the cartons, so I don't they need some self-rightenous blowhard who has no problem releasing emissions into the air from their car exhaust preaching to them about the ills of smoking like they just discovered electricity. It's akin to going up to every camper at Yosemite Park and telling them about how dangerous fires are. If I was one of those campers, I'd probably feel the need to show 'em just how dangerous it can be.

I think the smoking restrictions have gone too far as well. If resturants and bars wanna have smoking in their own private establishments that they paid their own money for, then let 'em. They'd be plenty of other establisments that offer sectioned smoking/non-smoking areas or smoke-free environments for people to choose from. But God forbid we let grown adults excercise the right to choose.

I've always said if it's that dangerous (and I believe it is), then ban the fucking thing altogether and get it over with. But the same hypocritical government that care about the children wouldn't wanna lose all that tax money now would they? It's all bullshit. And I know someone will throw out the whole "Prohibition!!" argument again, but that's just a sorry excuse to not go all the way.

I'm sorry for your loss Karish. But, I like smoking, and it's not a habit I can't quit. I had throat problems (no, not because of smoking) and I stopped smoking for three months. I started it again as a conscious choice bacause I like it. I know the possible consequences and to tell you the truth they're not that scary. I mean if the remote possibilities of me dying would stop me from having fun I would probably had a very very boring life. You americans are overeacting on smoking. I bet more people die in your country because they don't have health care than from lung cancer. I swear every time I watch an idiotic comment about smoking on a Hollywood movie I want to smoke ten packs more per day. Anyway to me the "don't smoke" phrase sounds to me like saying "Don't go out on the nightclub tonight, you might get drunk and then a track might hit you".

I'm truly sorry for your loss. However, smoking isn't the worst thing a person can do. I personally smoke because it helps relieve stress. It has nothing to do with my image or being peer pressured into it. And regardless if you smoke or not, odds are most people here are going to die of a disease anyway. I don't mind chopping 7 years off the end of my life because the last 7 years of anybody's life is usually when you lose your mind and are stuck in a home being fed like you're a helpless infant.

I quit cold turkey on January 2nd 2002 (to not be cliche and quit on the 1st.) I haven't had a cigarette since. I smoked for over 10 years.

Those who can't quit don't want to.

Hrm... well I do smoke, but it's like a cig a week. Two on a good week. I just find it goes well with drinking.

My dad used to smoke pretty much since before I was born until a few years ago. I am glad he stopped though since all of us had trouble breathing at times. Though at one point I was smoking a couple per day (bad times, lots of anxiety), I never really got 'addicted' and I can't really see why anyone would. I can understand it as a natural reaction to pressure or stress, but to smoke like a pack a day? That's some shit.

I dunno, the after taste is enough to deter me in the first place.

So is drinking for that matter.

You're most likely not going to from second-hand smoke either. These risks have been greatly exaggerated by the anti-smoking zealots.

Seriously, do some research. Or, watch the episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit that focuses on this topic. There are like two studies that are constantly cited for evidence of second-hand smokes effects. One of them's summation doesn't match the data and the other is based almost solely on the original.

My parents have smoked around me since day one and I have had zero health problems because of it. I know this isn't exactly a sample set you can draw conclusions on but I wanted to mention it to offset ChrisReid's example.

smoking is a drug.. forget the looking cool.. do you drnik to look cool? do pot to look cool? go skydiving to look cool?

nicotine is a drug that affects how you feel. and tobacco has a taste that some people actually like.

it is just another drug.. as long as it is legalized people need to understand that everyone has a right to want to do it.

this though is possibly the most retarded statement ever on the board.. ever... anyone who says (and means) they would rather die young obviously is still maturing.

The only thing is that I can understand why people do other drugs, there's an actual physical affect you get right from the get go. You want to get a buzz, you want to get smashed, you want to get high, whatever. On the other hand the SOLE SINGLE reason to start smoking is peer pressure which is the worst fucking reason ever for anything. And then the only reason to not stop is because you can't.

And that's all I'll say on that matter.

I've observed a lot of people in their 80's whose voices sound like Louie Armstrong with a trumpet up his ass and a porcupine in his throat because of smoking. There's really no good reason to smoke. I mean, I know people who do it are easily susceptible to finding 9,000 "great reasons" to smoke, but when it all boils down to it, it's just a drug, yes, but I find a lot more people smoke just to be socially accepted, as opposed to other drugs that actually do more than just changing your breath patterns. Some people just smoke when they're out in crowds. LOLZ I'M NOT ACTUALLY ADDICTED BUT HERE I AM IN A SOCIAL EVENT LIGHTIN' UP A SMOKE, I REALLY AM COOL, HONEST, I SWEAR!!!!11 ...yeah.

This is pretty much my stance. I don't smoke, I have friends who do though, and as long as I'm not having smoke blown in my face I don't care. But it's 2004, "smoking is bad for you," is right up there with "the sky is blue," and "water is wet" on the Obvious-O-Meter. If people want to do it, well, it's their body; their life. Anyone with enough will can quit.

no, I'm calling you retarded because you said you would rather die young.

Me personally, no I don't want to be crapping myself, but I DO hope I live long enough to see my great nephews/nieces, my grandkids, and maybe if I am lucky enough my great grand kids..

it is one thing to hope you age well, it is even another thing to say that if you don't age well you don't want to live like that, but it is a completely different thing to say you would rather die young... and that's what I meant by immaturity... because anyone who has truly seen what life has to offer would never make such a silly statement.
