Hey, fellas, Alan Wake or God of War III?

Long story short, a friend of mine is going to have his house all for himself next week and he invited me and a couple of friends over there for the whole week. Basically spending the whole week playing games, football, using the pool and eating plastic food, all that good shit.
I need to buy something to start and finish over there. Haven't decided between the two yet and can get either for about the same price (30€).

I have GoW and GoW II and love both games. I enjoyed the demo for GoW III, but I'm unsure about getting it at 30€. Kinda pisses me off that I have no money to buy the Collectors Edition, but fuck it.

Alan Wake has been on my mind because it's, supposedly, scary and would be a nice game to play over night.

So, what would you guys buy? This isn't really about which game is better, they're both good as far as I can tell, it's about which is better to play with friends.

God of War 3. I played the opening sequence in front of my friends and when it was done and we were suppose to go out, they wouldn't let me and asked me to continue playing cause they were enjoying what they were seeing.

I personally enjoyed Alan Wake more, but if you're playing with spectators God of War 3 is without a doubt your best choice.
I'm not a huge God of War fan but my best time with 3 was spent taking turns playing it with friends and oohing and ahhing and we battled massive golems and shit. It's one of those rare games that are almost as fun to watch as they are to play, plus it's one of the best looking games ever which helps.

God of War is more impressive both graphically and in scale and has a lot more "holy shit" moments than Alan Wake.

Well, seeing as both games are SP games, it will be hard playing them with friends. :p I can't speak of Alan Wake, but GoW3 has enough spectacles (and amazing graphics) that it will surely wow your gamer friends.

Both fucking wicked games but if you have an 'audience' GoW3 will keep them more entertained I would think.

Well neither can really be played with friends, but God of War haas the testosterone fuel to it so I would say that, although Alan Wake is a very awesome game.

Neither, get something you can actually play together like Super Street Fighter IV or a cool arcade racer or something.

God of War would be the better of the two for your friends to watch....but why get a single player game in the first place.

Obviously you've never played Resident Evil or Silent Hill with friends!

I vote God of War 3.

If you're looking to Alan Wake because it's scary, it isn't. It's thick with atmosphere but I never felt scared at all, not like when I play something like Silent Hill.

I think Alan Wake is a better game, but God of War 3 is definitely a better game to play with friends about considering how many "holy shit!!" moments it has.

A total brofest for sure.

There's been a price drop on GOW3 I think.. it's available for something like 30$ so you could pretty much get both.

If you like to think, Alan Wake.
If you like to beat gods into a pulp, God of War.
Whatever suits people these days.

Seems pretty consensual then? I realize that neither is a multiplayer game, but I'm already bringing Gears of War 2, Resident Evil 5 and Conviction to finish the co-op campaigns, they're the ones who asked me to buy either GoW III or Alan Wake, so they know what they're getting into. :lol

I guess GoW III it is. Thanks for the input, guys.

The gameplay in Alan Wale doesnt require much thinking, no more than GoW3. Unless you mean storywise but that's probably because it was more confusing than anything。

I was thinking about making a Heavy Rain vs Alan Wake thread, but I think I'll go the smart route, toss them both on my GameFly list, and see what ships first. :lol

Yeah, I think you'll only be able to enjoy AW's plot if you DON'T think. God of War is moronic but at least it makes sense.

Neither, Both are short titles with repetitive, shallow gameplay and lack replay. Better off renting both.

And I'm a bit confused about the, "This isn't really about which game is better, they're both good as far as I can tell, it's about which is better to play with friends.". You are buying two single player titles to play with friends?

Yes. Already explained it.

Alan Wake is more fun in the dark, by yourself with the sound up loud.

God of War III is more fun with friends to go "oh shit!" with.

Choice is easy.

(Also, confused by people implying Alan Wake doesn't make sense. Um.
It's not actually that hard to follow, guys, a song in the game itself pretty much explained the whole thing. :lol

COME ON MAN I DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR THAT

Which outdated game mechanic do you like more? QTE's, or boring gathering of pointless items? That will give you your answer.

I dunno, maybe I didn't pay enough attention during the cutscenes but if you were to give me a pop quiz on the plot right after I finished the game, I would fail so bad.
I mean, it wasn't Bayonetta confusing but the final chapter or so lost me.

For me, both scream RENTAL! RENTAL! Since you can harvest everything the games have in well under 10 hours.

God of War is a little better IMO. The promise of Alan Wake doesn't equate to what's in the box unfortunately. Not that it's a bad game. I think both are incredibly hard to recommend at full price.

Maybe rent them both and buy some pot.

Alan Wake is not suited for multiple people watching. You could have people with different reading speeds and tolerance for "looking around for shit" all waiting for someone to finish reading one of the pages.

GoW3 is a scream-o extreme-o "in you face bitch" testosterone fest with a protagonist who is a genuine shithead. But the gameplay is fun. Terrible story, though.

Alan Wake has a cool story and gameplay that is good, but not as fun as GoW3.

I guess it depends on which you're in the mood for at the time. They're both worth playing for different reasons.

If I had friends or family over and I wanted to show them a game that would make them want to play more games, it would be Alan Wake. GoW3 is something I'd be embarrassed to show someone who is not numbed to gaming stereotypes.

God of War 3!

After seeing the opening sequence they will not want to leave your house until the end credits are rolling. :lol

God of War III is GotY. Alan Wake would make a great rental.

What the hell? Why is this even a decision? God of War right away!!!

Well, we got the pot part covered. We can't rent games around here though. I mean, we can... but it's PS2 games.

Just ordered GoW btw.

Does Alan Wake ever move beyond "Run through this forest shining lights at shadow people until you get somewhere"? Because I'm starting Episode 3 and I am somewhat done with that formula.

Ignore both games and buy something fun for split-screen play, like Mario Kart or Hydro Thunder Hurricane.

Edit: Oh well.. :p

I borrowed both from different friends and got bored of both. But, I stopped playing GOW3 long after I stopped playing Alan Wake. GOW3 is the exact same "been there, done that" feeling and Alan Wake is run through the forest, shine a light on a guy and shoot him 3,000 times.

Sorry! I swear I didn't think that counted as a spoiler.
You don't actually HEAR the song until AFTER you have learned the information that's in it. It's more like if you are confused by the things the game has already told you, if you listen then hopefully it clears everything up for you.

I think the thing with Alan Wake is some elements of it are meant to be seen as abstract. The nature of story and how we participate in the narratives we read, experience, or actually live through and how the perspective of the person telling the story may or may not change what reality is. Very abstract stuff that isn't necessarily meant to have a specific "right" answer. But I just accept that and refuse to be confused by it. :lol

Episode 3 is unfortunately (in my opinion at least) one of the weakest points of the game. It definitely expands more after that. If you aren't enjoying yourself by the end of Episode 4, then the game isn't for you, but I wouldn't judge it yet.
