LTTP: God of War Ragnarok (PS4)

Since the OT is pretty old, I figured I'd post it here instead

I'm playing through it for the first time right now, and I think I'm near the end of a long Atreus section

Holy hell, this part is a slog to get through. There was a solid boss fight in there, but everything before and after? Complete garbage, in my opinion

Why does Sony keep pulling control away from the main characters? First The Last of Us Part II, now this. It just breaks the pacing and makes the whole experience feel worse imo

Please tell me this is the only time I have to play as Atreus
No, you will play as him a few more times, but the later Atreus sections aren't as long as Ironwood. This is by far the worst part of the game.

Ragnarok deserves a play in my opinion, what did GAF think of God of War Ragnarok?

For me, is the worse main GoW game of the 5 games.

Im gonna have to give this game a replay at some point. I loved it, but still felt disappointed - could have been so much more ambitious by just putting it on PS5 only. It felt like a PS4 era game because it was. A next gen god of war game isnt supposed to feel like the last gen version .

I will replay it and probably love it again, but this time just eagerly anticipating the next non cross gen entry

It's a highly quality game with its share of problems, manipulating the young Loki lines things up for a great sequel.

I found the previous entry to be too much of a slog...(my first ever experience of playing a God of War game...) I might watch this instalment as a movie though...

Finish the game on PC yesterday….I have mix feelings I thought it overstayed its welcome. Would still recommend it to fans.

it's a good game but it's bloated.
And the story is soft as fuck. It's sooooo safe. (and woke).
2018 was so much better

They went too small on Set pieces. I dont even remember any from the game.

This is fucking god of war, come on, memorable set pieces is the staple of the franchise.

of course. the main problem in this game is tho safe and woke story.

but the pacing, gameplay are also all worse than in the first game. they also tell you the solutions to all puzzles in the audio and physical clues. you can't say no to this. it's like an ai telling you exactly what to do constantly. at some point, just give me a do it yourself button, like if i am watching a movie, boss included, what's the point of playing this? its not a videogame, it's an interactive movie.

it's worse than 18 in all aspects. but the worse for me was the ai constantly telling you, or worse showing you where to go next. if you cut audio, which i did, the ai show you very explicitely where to go. and without audio you can't hear the interesting lores / story told by mimir.

it's an awful game for people who just discovered videogames. it's stupid

100% both games on GMGOW. Gameplay was better than gow2018, but because you're mostly in the same environment, it got old and felt repetitive as hell, and because of that, gameplay wasn't actually better, it just felt better. The story was a fucking disaster. Pathetically written shitshow that did not look nor felt like a GoW game. Literally everything was bad about it. And the way they pussiefied Kratos is unexcusable. If Barlog isn't writing the next game, we're fucked.

God of War: Ragnarok (GoWR) is an OK game. When I finished it, I totally forgot about it.
But the level of game development craftsmanship is top-notch.
All that effort and skill just wasn't used well to tell a good story.
They tried a slightly more open level structure—sometimes it worked, most of the time it didn't.
I think Santa Monica Studio got a bit of a slap in the face with GoWR because fans weren't very happy.
They built something great with God of War (2018). That generational transition they did with Kratos wasn't easy—just look at Halo and Gears—and they nailed it.
So for their next project, they'll probably be extra careful not to further damage their reputation. That's good for us, but it adds extra pressure on the team.
Anyway, if you remove GoWR from the series, nothing really feels missing. It feels more like an additional adventure for Kratos—like God of War: Ascension.

Found the story to be a major miss. They had so much they could build up to, or do with time travel, and more.

It was pathetic lol.

Best 6/10 game of all time.

I hope we get a GoW1 remake/remaster or the rumored Metroid like is true:

Dropped it after spending some time in The Barrens

I can't see a damn thing, have no clue where I'm supposed to go, and it feels like I've done more busywork puzzles than actual combat throughout the entire game

There are chests scattered all over the place that I clearly can't reach yet, they all just scream 'come back later,' which kills all the momentum

And the thought of slogging through more Atreus sections? Yeah, that kills any excitement I had left. I'm out
