and to answer your question, yes it's only for the screen; the save data has nothing to do with it, although the memory card beeps every time you boot up the system after the thing runs out of battery.

Maybe, but I've never had a VMU that didn't beep. I have a bunch I bought brand new, but I kept the white tag in place to block the battery flow.

It's pretty simple to cut the wire that powers the beeper, IIRC.
