I have the school network to work off of: gives me 50k/sec, which isn't too bad. But when I'm home...gh.

I have to have the entire connection idle if I want to start up Trillian. :p

OMG SEARCH NOW!

Maybe you can find el cheapo DSL.

Isn't a matter of price, but the fact that the people who actually pay the bills think that paying more than $20 a month is silly for something that "won't be much faster."

I got around that by paying for it myself, but at that time I was living at home. Keep pestering them about it, make them see reason.

Got a wifi card? Snoop around for hotspots accessable from home. Or find a local cafe with wifi.

Wow - the INTERNET is still compatible with dial-up connections?!!11
:lol

Barely. This weekend, I went home for Thanksgiving as did most of the US. On both of my family's computers, I could barely connect at or above 28.8k. Browsing GAF worked; if you can call "slower than slower than molassess" working. Logging on from my Powerbook from my old room gave better results -- 44kbps and what seemed to be pretty good compression. Teh Internets was tolerable.

Now, with the last minute discovery of the new "Tapioca Paradise"* wi-fi enabled coffeehut near my parents' house, I believe things shall be more bearable come Christmas.

* For those Houstonians who wish to know, it's near Kuykendahl and Louetta in Spring, along Louetta, on the Randall's side, in that new shopping center with the sports bar and Orient Express (both probably owned by the same family what owns the coffeehut).
