Hey, uh, has this ever happened? (McElroy: GAF has actively tried to fool the press)

I don't know how to post the pics of it but McElroy is back at it on Twitter this morning.

For the record, here is where I'm at on McElroy. I think the Skyrim video is clearly a joke and funny. I think the Joystiq post about the Call of Duty guy was clearly satire and hilarious. I listen to MBMBAM and the Besties and listened to all of the Joystiq podcasts back in the day and love Justin in all of them.

I am clearly a fan of Justin McElroy and even I can't defend his inane ramblings on Twitter. Insinuating that everyone who disagrees with him hasn't done anything with their life outside of what can be measured with a "Battlenet authenticator" is not promoting intelligent dialog.

If someone from Giant Bomb posted that Skyrim video everyone would love it.

When Diablo came out they posted a small video with just the game box, some candles and ambient audio of a restaurant.

I don't know if everyone loved it, but I didn't see any complaints. And I say this as someone who dislikes this guy as much as anyone else.

Who cares if GAF tries to fool the press? No one should be using it as a source for a news story anyway.

This replaced I Love Mondays for that week, if I remember correctly. The weekly video where they talk about quick looks and stories will be going up during the week. There was no dancing. Nor was there anyone in the video, let alone anyone involved with the review.

People throwing a fit over that video are being irrational. The issue here is what he has said on Twitter - not whether he digs Skyrim enough to film himself spinning with it in his arms.

But it still showed a heightened focus (implying anticipation and excitement) over the release of the game, over any others that were being released in said week ;]

yep, some peeps laugh/mock GAF and yet also plucks news/info from it.

"Why, I would never read GAF, I'm not some BOTTOM FEEDER!" Then follows @neogafnewthread

Something like this really did happen, and no-one gave a shit.

Here is Brad celebrating receiving his copy of Starcraft 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkrVMCEuPYQ

and his 5/5 review! http://www.giantbomb.com/starcraft-ii-wings-of-liberty/61-20674/reviews/

If the old Joystiq podcast had been as much listened to on neogaf as the bombcast, people would have understood Justin much better and it would have been a non-issue.

I know what it was, and I think the intent was very clear, when you read both in the context of "it was only a joke". I don't need to see Brad sitting there pretending to get a romantic dinner with D3 to see what they are going for. I also already knew Brad would give it 5 stars because "Blizzard polish OMG" but that is part of knowing the guys.

My point is, there are worse things to get angry about than this dude's video that was clearly a joke (like I said before, he is just a fucking clown), even if he was going to review the game. If we want to get suspicious about things, then we can make a thread about everything that the press gets that might color their experiences, but while obnoxious, I don't find a video of that guy dancing with the disc as incredibly shocking and career ending as some other people might do, and I agree with the point that if it was anyone else (that people liked) they wouldn't even think twice about it.

Stop CAPITALIZING random WORDS.

No it doesn't. It makes you a hypocrite. And Justin does have a history of posting random videos, just look up Girlfriend Justin McElroy on YouTube.

You need to calm down, breathe, and go outside for a walk.

Your world isn't going to end over this issue; I assure you.

As other have mentioned, his video isn't the issue. It's his attitude as a whole, which, much like yours, requires an immediate adjustment.

I realize the primary issue of the thread. His comments on Twitter are silly.

I still dislike seeing that gif posted as if it was some damning denouncement of the credibility of games journalism in general and Justin in particular.

I... am calm? Just because I took issue with your post doesn't mean I worked up over it.

You're calm now, yes, after your walk.

How was it?

On-topic: Justin's comments were silly and ill-mannered, but I'm genuinely surprised this has garnered so much attention.

I'm not. If you call yourself a journalist and you freely admit that you use forums as sources, you're tacitly admitting that you're not a journalist -- you're just an aggregator.

All the more infuriating that he's championing a game that was unplayable for PS3 owners and sold using misleading reviews based on 360 code. Such disgusting sycophancy. If gaming "journalists" had done their fucking job properly, reviews would have informed purchasers of Bethesda's scandalous behaviour. Instead they awarded the company a veritable orgy of GOTY awards.

How was it unplayable for PS3 owners? I really hope you're not referring to the growing file size of saves, which grew to game-breaking levels after 80+ hours. You can't honestly expect games journalists to put in 80 consecutive hours into one product and then perform a review on it.

I didn't see anyone post this, but Justin is saying this tweet:

is fake. I have no idea if it is or not but that's what he's saying on his twitter.

Also, like others have said, the Skyrim thing was an obvious joke and it really has no bearing on this discussion.

They have a history of doing off-the-wall, tongue-in-cheek videos. Justin does not, which simply made it doubly sad.

If you've seen any other videos he's posted or any podcasts he's done, it very much fits in line with his style of humor. This argument doesn't work.

It was fake and it was hilarious, and I thought everyone knew that. It's basically summing up his complaints.

So does Justin... their MBMBAM is pretty funny, and most of the McElroy videos. I think his remarks about gaf are always wrong, but he gets so much criticism for that Skyrim video ... and it's so taken out of context, whcih was... it's a fucking joke.

Uhh...there's a disclaimer saying it is Photoshopped. Plus that tweet isn't the basis of this thread. Though we could go without the skyrim.gif thing already.

I second this.

Fair enough. I'm just relaying what Justin said on twitter. He seems to think people are taking it seriously. I actually hadn't seen the image before he tweeted it.

This is actually how I migrated to GAF years ago. I noticed that most of the things I read referred to something called "NeoGAF" as the source.

Me too lol. I think I joined like 8 years ago because of this. Everybody kept saying "I read it on NeoGaf" and I was like "I gots to join man".
