Just took advantage of TRU's Blu Ray buy 1, get 1 deal. Picked up Pirates 1-2, Casino Royale, and Ratatouille.

Brings my BRD collection up to six, and I won't be picking up a PS3 until tomorrow night. :lol The cases sure are tantalizing though. :(

you know what I hate about all of these BOGO's and stuff? I got all the good movies a few months ago and I paid full price for them.

I don't have my excel file handy but last I checked I have spend almost $1000 on Blu-Ray movies since I bought my PS3 in August and I haven't updated it since the middle of December. I'm probably around $1200 by now.

Could this be the most retarded shit he has written yet? If he is this crazy now can you imagine what type of shit he is going to be writing 2 months from now.

Umm ... that is proper widescreen. TV widescreens are at a 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio.

The two most common film aspect ratios today are 1.85:1 and 2.39 ... both being wider then your set, and thus creating letterboxing.

Here's an example of a 2.39 image on widescreen TV:

Do all TRUs carry Blu Rays? I would love to go get a few for when I pick up another PS3 in a few weeks, but mine is pretty far out and is a dumb.

Yes I can. You're off my ignore list, along with chemo and crayon.

Also, I went to pick up my daughter today, and got a package from my sister in PA. My Blu Ray collection just doubled. :0

I got the movies from the 5 free movie deal for my Ps3 (hence Stir of Echoes and Flight of the Phoenix). Not a bad haul, considering I only paid half price for one of them (Ricky Bobby) and the rest were free. I'm pretty happy that I got those movies, since I was worried that it would take a lot longer from the stories I'd heard. My BR collection is now at 12, half of my HD DVD collection. A few more BOGOs and it should zoom right by it.

no problem. I was joking on my second post BTW ... just thought it was funny how fast people attacked.

It is curious they didn't make the TV standard wider though. I can only assume it was either because 4:3 content would just look ridiculous on it (even wider pillarboxes) ... or for some technical reason that made it harder to produce TV's that way (or both).

Well in that case i believe everyone else covered your audio stuff, anyway. The Patriot is awesome, i would wait till you upgrade your speakers, cause it sounds amazing. Tight booming base.

Do any current Blu-Rays have firmware updates on the discs themselves? A friend is having absolutely no luck getting Sunshine to play on his PS3, and doesn't have internet access to download the latest version. I tried grabbing the file from Sony's site and putting it onto a flash drive for him, following the directions to a tee, but the system won't recognize that there's any update file present. Suggestions?

Only one I can think of was R&C ... though that was a few revisions old. You may want to see if others are having issues with Sunshine, I'm not sure many have found it yet. Maybe all PS3's are having problems?

As for other suggestions, make sure you set up the folder structure correctly for the flashdrive. Worse comes to worse, have him bring his PS3 by your place to hook it up online.

:lol So I am sitting here watching Farris Bueller on Universal HD and a Blu Ray commerical comes on. It is one I haven't seen before and has testamonials from directors (cars dude) and customers. One of the customers says "yeah some of my friends have HD DVD but blu ray just looks so much better" (or something like that). Thought that was pretty funny.

That image is 240x180. Divide by 60 in each and that becomes 4x3...
Am I missing something in this explanation?

Ten Trends from CES 2008 (Wired)

Blu-Ray Triumphant

With Warner's nastily-timed defection to Blu-Ray Disc, forcing HD-DVD to cancel much of its CES presence, the buzz is that Blu-Ray will stride on to ultimate victory. HD-DVD backer Toshiba's somber press conference exhorted us not to give it up for dead, but the message from the conference is clear: it's losing.

The message from real life, however, is that consumers couldn't give a damn. DVD will be king for years to come. If Comcast's CES-announced 100 megabit cable internet plans come by the promised 2009 date, optical disks will be obsolete anyway.

Why do I keep going to this website?

This should show it better:

1.78:1 (16 divided by 9) movies on a widescreen television:

2.35:1 movies on a widescreen television:

It IS proper widescreen. That's the theatrical ratio... the way it's meant to be seen.

2.35 FTW, you could always zoom in if it bugs you that much... You still get 1080 in height but more width!

lol ... you're right ... I fail (I misread the caption on the pic)

The letterboxing isn't that dramatic on a 16:9 screen.

Crap. I can't find a really good pic that verifies aspects. Here's something (though it only goes up to 2:25 ... not 2.35, 2:55, etc.) to demonstrate the size of the bars.

HOWEVER, those are not representative of the effect on the pictures viewpoint ... they are cheap crops. You should see MORE of the picture ... not less.

Those are all on a 16:9 display
