You only had one point to begin with and I'm not sure how we are supposed to even talk about it. Is her hypothetical engagement to raise money to fund progressive activism a net positive or negative? You yourself say you don't know, what is there to discuss?

You take the money if its a net positive to the movement. Some people clearly don't think it is. You should be debating utility.

I've see several people in this thread say her being involved will hurt the movement more than help it. They might well be wrong, but you seem to have overlooked that logic.

That sentiment probably plays a part of it for a number of people and that's a bad thing. Much like it's a bad thing that the sentiment that people to the left are idiots and thus should be ignored out of hand is probably driving some of the knee jerk defenses. That's a bad thing too.

Intentions don't matter much in politics. All that matters is what people think. If the net result of her participating is hurting the cause then we should be against her participation. If the net result of her participating is helping then we should be for it. This should be an argument about utility.

[Maybe, but isn't this very thread an example of the fact that there will be some sort of damage to image? The question is if the damage will outweigh the positive.

It's not a tautology. I never said anything about disliking Hillary in this thread, which makes sense as I don't dislike her.

What I'm saying is that clearly regardless of intention this will be interpreted negatively by some people. That negative interpretation has a chance to damage the cause. The question is if that will outweigh the positives her actions bring about.

If it helps you give me a fair shake I'll let you know I'd actually lean towards it would indeed be a net positive.

I'd be inclined to agree. But then you're talking about utility, which is exactly what I'm saying should be the topic of discussion.

I've posted several times in this thread what people probably think they are. Other people have also posted them, and I think you know what they are.

I personally don't agree, the good probably outweighs the harm. I've also said that throughout this thread.

The fact that her being associated with the movement might harm it in terms of image more than her skills helps it. I don't think that's correct, but I don't think its bullshit either. I've said this several times throughout the thread.

I guess to say, what's the issue with what she is doing? She is without a doubt one of the most successful female politicians ever. Be kind of a waste for her to fall off the edge. Sticking around to raise money, speak, etc. Not to mention being the inspiration for a million girls to succeed in politics. There is no real loss for her doing this.

If she is gearing up to run again or something, I'd be with ya all and saying piss off. But it looks like she is done. There is still a hell of a lot of good she can offer. I mean, having Bernie out there doing the same exact thing, having Clinton, having Obama, having the Dems out there building back up from the ground is exactly what needs to be done after the last election and Clinton can provide one of the biggest assets to it. Nor would I say I want to see her career completely end on a note from getting beat by Trump. Carter and Gore are two great examples, where even though they lost. They stuck around and have done some amazing work since, honestly, probably the best of their career.

Again, there's no real reason to doubt that she's going to steer clear of "controversial" movements like BLM considering they had full complete confidence in her when the stakes were higher. Now she no longer has a need to come off as a mainstream, controversy-free politician.
