I just had a crazy idea that I wouldn't doubt if Hollywood is working on but computers are probably not advanced enough.

But eventually you have a computer do a scan of a skeleton of some famous historical figure like Julius Caesar. Somehow through genetics or whatever or DNA or whatever they find on the bones, the computer does a full scan of what they actually look like.

Then, through the magic of CGI you have the scanned figure appear in movies. So now you have historical figures what they actually look like up here in movies with maybe somebody famous doing the voice over.

I can see this being done or actually even planning to be done soon enough with the technology we have.

For what it's worth, I'm watching Gladiator right now and that's why I just came to me.

Edit: I know they do this with actors who passed away but I'm talking about historical figures that lived hundreds or thousands of years ago.

For that to happen we'd need films that are actually historically accurate to begin with.

Very, very few historical movies are actually accurate. In fact, I'd go as far to say that most are completely fantasy or revisionist history. A lot are so bad that they're borderline offensive (Braveheart, The King and The Patriot are some prime examples)

So, I like the idea as it would make films more accurate, but if the story so far from historical truth that it's just fantasy then what's the point?

Either make historical dramas as accurate as possible, or don't bother at all.

I wish there was historical media which was as fascinated with accuracy as this would require, but there simply isn't any and there likely cannot be any.

Every single piece of historical fiction today is designed to speak to modern audiences and to speak to modern issues as there's fundamentally a deep current of contemporary narcissism that runs through every person in Hollywood and in our general culture at large.

Even when we have clear examples of history mirroring present day issues that would seem perfect for a modern audience, they would still make modern audiences feel uncomfortable by being framed within a context that's inconsistent with our modern values or our basic understanding of the "rules" of history, and as such they wouldn't be able to be presented explicitly.

So I just don't think it'd make sense to focus on making these characters look exactly real if you weren't going to surround these perfect physical depictions with equally accurate historical depictions. It'd be a waste of technology.

You are spot on as well as others here who have mentioned about accuracy. I'm okay with taking liberties but it sucks when it has to try to appeal to modern audiences because we all know what that means.

In today's Hollywood ,Julius Caesar would be black,trans,have asian ancestors and for some reason just hates white males all around him.

Considering that the Julius Caesar was 5'7 and the average roman was 5'5, I'm sure that for today standards they wouldn't be all that intimidating for a man that ruled the entire Roman empire.

Scientists have been doing this for years. But realistic, lifelike CGI is expensive, and many historical figures are ugly.

Crazy to think that Oliver Reed's final scenes in Gladiator were a revolutionary multi-million dollar investment and now some AI webcam tool can do it in real time. Not even a quarter century since then.
A CGI historical figure will absolutely be the selling point of a movie or TV show, not far from now. Maybe something like those Ottoman docudramas on Netflix will do it first.
