I've not read the books, (I know for shame, maybe after I finish reading Catch 22)

wtf I just read Catch 22 and I'm going into Hitchhiker's Guide for the first time (I'm done with the first book). :D

My penis is still intact.
I still haven't read the books either. I'll get round to it someday, but I think I'll watch the movie first. It's better that way, less chance for me to be disappointed in what the movie leaves out/puts in and the look of characters etc.

Man, this looks great! Great added sequence on Magrathea with the booby traps...

"Zark! What was that?"

"Run!"

:lol

This looks at least really good. I kind of want the movie to flop just so it won't gain massive popularity and be "hip" to like, like Napoleon Dynamite and LOTR. I don't know, when things like that happen, it kind of takes a little bit of the magic away.

Although I do want to see the rest of the series...

They moved the movie up one week. Guess they got a little Vader-phobia and want an extra week of box office.

Between the radio show, BBC television series, the old text adventure and numerous releases of the books over the past 25+ years, the series has ALREADY gained massive popularity. This movie has the potential to be one of the biggest releases of the year.

I wish but no. It could be very popular and make 75 million plus which would be a sizable profit, but this year is hugh for movies. War of the Worlds, Star Wars, King Kong, Batman Begins, Fantastic Four (which looks shitty imo) and the Choronicles of Narnia in one year mean it won'be one of the top films. But here's hoping its a massive success.

Trailer was okay... I'm a bit of a fan of the Hitchhiker series, having read the books, listened the radio series several times in two languages and seen the TV series, so the movie is a must see.

The books certainly were not as good as the BBC radio series. And the Finnish version of the series is even better, having better actors and going all the way to the fifth book of the trilogy, Mostly Harmless. Unfortunately the fifth book was as weak in radio format as it was as a book.

Now they need to start on the Discworld novels.

A film adaptation of The Light Fantastic would be awesome, especially if it was a 3 hour epic.

Terry Gilliam would have to direct, though.

I approve of this trend for Hollywood to recreate my favorite childhood novels in good fashion.

Looks great, can't wait to see it.

Perfect. A Colour of Magic/The light Fantastic movie directed by Terry Gilliam, a script written by Terry Prachett, starring Ian Mackellan or Eric Idle as Rincewind and somebody else as Twoflower. And they'd have to add Sam Vimes and Death,

I'm not speaking of worldwide success; I hope the movie does achieve that. I just don't want it to be the next big American fad. That would be a tragedy, I believe, despite the money it would make. Surely you understand what I mean?

You're not one of those "oh now I can't appreciate it anymore because of its popularity" elitists are you? If the movie is great, I hope it gets all the popularity it deserves, and brings new fans to the series.

I do, but my point is that it has been an American fad for over 25 years. The movie may bring more folks to the fold, but don't underestimate the number of HHGTG fans who have been waiting for this :)

It's like this: the book is popular, but it's popular with the right type of people that it should be popular to. It's an intellectual's book. I really don't want something that I hold dear to my heart for its genius to start being widely "appreciated" by all the morons who haven't read two books in their entire lifetime.

With the recent widespread infatuation with Napoleon Dynamite, I'm terrified that something similar might happen with HGTTG. Hopefully it will be too smart for that to happen, too smart to appeal to the uneducated masses. Wow, I guess I do sound like an elitest, but you know what I mean, right?

I don't just quit appreciating things despite their popularity. The most popular band ever to grace the earth also happens to be my favorite; The Beatles' popularty doesn't bother me, because I know that for the most part, people who appreciate them have good taste in music, so their appreciation is legitimate.

Thank you Mana. That big clear version is like a completely different trailer. I love it even more than before.

My only criticism is that the trailer has no Shynola.

Yes it does. Watch it again. There's a brief clip of the Guide open and you see the "interface" within. That's clearly Shynola stuff.

damn, i'd hate to be you. who gives a shit if people don't "understand" the books like you do? isn't the whole point...entertainment? to enjoy the wonderful settings and characters? you seem to place an unnecessary importance on niche details. sad.

C'mon lay off. We'll see how you react when they make a Dark Tower series of movies. :)

just the existence of one (or more) dark tower films would excite me. if more people love it, that's awesome! the more fans, the better. the only way this formula isn't correct is when bands become too popular and they don't play small venues anymore. that sucks. :(

as a side note, dark tower films seem perfect for a big-budget hbo series. mmmm.

The trailer was nice, gives me hope for this movie. Casting of Arthur could've have been more perfect, btw...still sore about Zaphod, though.

Not to jack the thread, but I have thought this since around book 4. They could really do an amazing job if they broke up the books into a sort of season. You get 8 seasons of a show that will almost surely have people watching till the end, (HUSH! Don't bring up Kingdom Hospital.), and you'd have the time to really get the story out.

And yeah, to kind of tie back into this thread, I too would be also very excited if there was even the idea of a film being done on the Dark Tower series.

He loved the novel, like a child. But when he found out it was getting a big screen adaption of it, he worried. This summer Ford Prefect is "The Man Who Worried"
