Saw this during a triple feature between Kung Fu Hustle and Sin City. Out of the three it was easily the least memorable. Its not a bad movie, just not that good of one. I didnt think it flowed all that well and the comedic timing seemed off.
I'm a fan of the first two books, hated the third, and haven't read the last two. I also liked the TV series, and love the radio version.
I loved the movie. It had its problems, but I thought they were the same problems that the books had. Meandering, semi-sensical plot, mostly, and humor that is hit and miss (though mostly hit). I was missing some good stuff that I did not think would work very well in a movie-- like Prosser's ancestry-- but I the book itself was fabulous (and looked great).
I also *liked* the romance. One thing that always fell flat for me in the books was the romance (or lack thereof) while were supposed to somehow care about Trillian. I think the redio show did the best job with this, with
Arthur moving on, eventaully finding another girl to grow a spine for, steal the Heart of Gold, and run off with.
This was an adequate substitute for that-- Arthur's refusal to evolve as a character in the books is one reason why I think I got tired of them. The radio show was better, this is pretty decent as well. The
restored Earth, and plot confusion regarding the mice's motives at the end
was a shame, but it's really just a coda to the rest of the plot, and no biggie. And Trillian and Zaphod are for more interesting in the movie than they were in the books, a bonus. Not enough Ford, unfortunately.
Yep, it's different, and a lot of good stuff got left behind-- but that's the movies for you. I wanted the new jokes, frankly-- I know the old ones all too well.
He grows a lot in the 4th book, but then it seemed like Adams wanted to take back everything for the 5th book. 5th was real dissapointing to me with
the most important secondary character in the series - with her Ultimate Question just on the tip of her tongue - just dissapearing suddenly then the lame ending.
I watched this on tuesday and enjoyed it , never read the books nor do I plan to. Although a friend of mine who was there with me said the first book was way worse then the movie was and that the movie did something the books didn't - actually made him laugh.
This movie was a steaming turd. The comedic delivery was horrible and the plot jumped all over the place. I imagine that 90% of the audience (the portion that hasn't read the book) had no idea what the hell was going on, and I wouldn't blame them because the movie gleefully avoids any attempt at exposition.
