Holding off on Next Generation Gaming

I have been batting this around with some friends and on this board a little bit and was just wondering what the general mood is. How many are holding off on jumping to the next generation of consoles for now, especially this holiday season? Looking over all the games coming out for this current generation and realizing I don't have the time or money to buy all of those games it just seems a little rushed too jump to the next generation console. Given track records of how mediocore most launch games end up being and how much I missed out on that last year of PSone jumping onto PS2 I don't want to make that mistake again.

Overall i'm wondering if with the onslaught of great current generation games lined up for the holidays and shortly after and a general underwhelming attitude of most next gen games being shown if there are many more people taking a wait and see approach and being a little more hesitant to slap down a ton of money on next gen this soon. I have also been wondering how much more mulitplatform these systems are going to be, with developers trying to make as much money back on their development time and cost how many exclusives we will see compared to just multiplatform games. And if there will be any reason to own all 3 consoles over say 1 or 2 of them.

I think i'm going to count myself in the wait till next holiday season to jump on next generation group. For added topic discussion these are the current gen titles I am looking forward to this holiday.

I generally don't buy consoles at launch (in fact, it's only happened once). On top of that , I don't know what each system is going to cost, so there's no way in hell I'm commiting to any system yet.
 
i already have a good sized backlog, next gen can wait. x360 launch games arent enticing enough for me to waste money
 
i'll be getting the next gen consoles as well as getting any titles I may want for my older systems. hey, i got it like that :p
 
Whatever. What fucking ever. I STILL have my fucking SNES hooked up to my TV. And I STILL play SNES games. Just because another fucking generation is coming around I'm not going to toss all my games out. I played Bomberman on my Dreamcast 2 days ago.

Why should I fucking hold off, PGR3 looks like its going to be amazing. Are you kidding me, I can't WAIT to see what they do with the ps3!! Fuck holding off because it in no way means I can't still play games from previous generations, and it doesn't mean people will stop making games.

Final Fantasy IX came out after the ps2 was launched, as an example.
 
i interested, and excited, about all 3, but i don't think i'll be buying any at launch.

i'm adopting a wait and see attitude.

as you've said, the amount of quality current gen releases is amazing, plus handhelds! it's too much. i know once i play next gen it's going to be difficult to go back, from a gfx point of view.

and there's the cost...
 
I'll probably hold off for a while. There are so many great games out now, and I have a backlog of literally hundreds of games. The only next gen title I am really hyped about at the moment is Oblivion for 360. I don't think I'll be ever able to totally clear my backlog but I really do need to hold off on buying anything more.
 
I'm gonna wait for many reasons.
My present backlog is huge and there's alot of good games still to come on present consoles. Also, i'm gonna wait at least for the Ps3 to be out.
I want to buy the leading console, the one will the more choices of games. I don't give a crap about anything else actually. I hope to buy only one console and maybe the Revolution if it's really a different experience.
This gen there was nothing that convinced me to own both Xbox and PS2. I'll probably need only one between those 2 next gen.
I also think that the hardware problems will be even worse than the present gen. I'll let the troubles to the early adopters and i'll buy the console a little later. I will benefit from a more solid hardware and also prolly a price drop.
This all means that next-gen is probably beginning sometimes in 2007 for me.
 
I was in this camp at first, but then took a look at my Dreamcast on my shelf. Now granted this system was a really good system at the time, and I have gotten my enjoyment out of it (being the only launch system I have ever bought day 1), But I don't play it anymore, and the prices are rediculous on it to resell. I spent over 2k on that system during its life, and didn't maximize trade in values on it.

I had a game collection of over 35 games for PS2 and Xbox, and recently decided to trade in the Xbox and about 28 of those games. I still have the PS2 and 6 games, and plan on buying the new Smackdown and Soul Calibur games for it. I had recently found myself only playing PS2 games for some reason. Plus I knew I could get pretty good credit from gamestop with the extra 50% coupon they had going this month on used games. So now I have the Xbox 360 + 7 games coming to me for no cash down. That right there makes me excited for next gen.

I knew that I 'had' to have the next Xbox at some point. I also knew that once new graphics came out, there were going to be a lot of games that I would lose interest in playing, much like what happened with the jump I experience by going to Dreamcast from PS1 and N64.

I will support the PS3 at launch as well. These 2 systems hopefully will provide years and years of enjoyment.
 
I will get all of 'em on day one, as usual. Luckily this time they all have significantly different things to offer me.

I didn't get an xbox this gen (already had a PS2, cube, and a PC) but I am considering giving myself a 360 for xmas this year. So far the software shown is not that interesting to me, and I have to wonder what is going to be available on launch day. So... I dunno :)
 
I'm buying a 360 for the features it offers. The games will come... they always do. I wouldn't be as excited if I didn't have an HDTV, if I didn't have a wireless network, if I didn't have broadband acces, or if I didn't have a 5.1 surround sytem... but I DO have all of those things and I want to utilize them to the fullest extent through gaming. I can't do that now, but I can with 360.
 
I'm going to wait because:

-The first revisions of the HW are the most problematic.
-I will wait until the X360 drops to 200$ and probably can choose another color/version
-I still need to finish a lot of current gen games and others more to come (Black, HL2, FarCry, Burnout revenge, Stubbs the zombie, KUF:H..etc)
 
I will get a next gen console when a big game I'm interested in comes out. I don't buy many fps/sports/racing games so I don't really care about launch games.

Wow, way to miss the mark buddy. I still play all my old systems too, but taking your FF IX for example I missed that completely because I had jumped on the PS2. I was actually lucky a friend shoved it into my hands years later and said I had to play it. On the other hand most of the PS2 launch games I bought instead were very forgettable. I think we all are interested in all the next gen systems, but you're confusing holding off with never buying the systems.

PS3 will probably be my first (and probably only) next gen system, and I'll play the last wave of good PS2 games coming out the end of this year and throughout next year on that.

I'll be getting Next Gen as soon as I can afford it. And I'm fully prepaired to relingush certain basic needs to speed this along. You know, stuff like food and drink. I've played and finished MGS3. That's it for me with this gen.

How did I miss the mark. If you missed it completely thats your own fault. Halo was a launch game that in my mind was pretty decent. As was Project Gotham. I dont' remember much about the ps2 launch because it was so fucking long ago. But wasn't GT3 a launch title. I could be wrong.

But as for this year, PDz looks absolutly forgettable you're right about that. But PGR3 looks like its going to be great, and Oblivion is probably my most anticipated game coming.

I'm saying I get everything and I play everything. I don't need to wait.
 
Good point, ps2 does have an amazing line up coming that far overshadows 360 launch at least. I did the launch thing back in my younger days when I had no real expenses or responsibilities. Doing the outrageous Diehard Gamefan import of $700 for a saturn and a ps one a month later. Its hard to believe that system launches are even more rushed out the door then they were back then. To me getting one at launch now just equals sucker. Especially when you can get one most likely a year later that is manufactered better, is alot cheaper and actually may have games that reflect its prowess.
 
I still haven't played many good games/series from this generation. I am actually waiting for the next gen to start so that prices for current gen games drop. My wish list is absolutely huge!
 
I like games, so I'll probably getting all 3 next-gen systems just like I got all 3 current gen systems.

Now whether that'll be near launch date is a whole different matter. It really depends on the games available. So far I have no idea what games I'll be able to buy at the X360 launch. There are a bunch of titles in development I'm interested in, but if only 1 or 2 are available at launch, then -eh- I can wait.

Not worried about future current-gen games. I'll still have the systems to play them on, and there's always backward compatibility (iffy on x360 I know).

Console price is another issue I might be slightly worried about, especially if it's expensive. Looking at the hardware I can understand if they're much more expensive than $299, plus hey, it's not really the console that's expensive, many of you probably spent much more money on the games themselves. However, paying say $399 at launch only to have it drop to $299 quickly does leave a bitter aftertaste.

What I'm most likely NOT going to do is buy a European system. Extravagant prices for games that arrive much later than their American/Japanese counterparts is no fun. I'm not sure about something though, perhaps someone can answer this for me - if I import a US X360 will I have issues getting on Live seeing that I'm in Europe?
 
I still have a pretty large backlog to get through, but there's only like 4 or 5 games that I *really* want to complete. I've still got plenty of time to do so before next-gen rolls around :)
 
Screw next-gen. I probably won't finish this gen until 2008. When many great games start hitting $10, I'll pick up a next-gen console.

This is where the communication is breaking down. You're an exception, not the rule. The majority of gamers don't have the time and money to play everything.
 
Hey, I'm not knocking cheapass gaming, I live by it, as well. Aside from a few rare exceptions, I generally don't bother paying full price for games anymore.
 
My god, if i had any say, next gen would have started yesterday. It boggles my mind how anyone can look at the launch games and games coming out soon after, and not find 2 or 3 that they can't wait to play. For me there are at least 7 or 8 that i want.

And of course as we know, once you buy a next gen console, you are required by law to stop buying any old gen games. So even though there will still be some good games coming out for xbox and ps2, i'm not gonna risk going to jail to play them.

You're right about that. There is a discussion going on about "do you beat your games" and some people are saying that in order to beat all their games, they just dont' buy all that many games. Now that, I guess, I coudl see as reasoning for why you'd want to wait on getting on the NG bandwagon
 
Does the DS count as Next Generation Gaming? (heh) I'm more excited about playing Mario Kart DS online than any next gen or current gen console games coming this year.

As it stands, the 360 hasn't made my must buy list - particularly at the expense of $300 (my cost estimate) worth of other games coming this year (not to mention wanting an HDTV to get the full experience). PS3 and Rev are too far off to make that decision just yet.

Also, I've got an enormous backlog. Not to mention that summer-fall '05 for cheap-ass games will be like winter '04 for gamers who pay full price, so my current-gen backlog is only going to get more ridiculous.

And the melodrama continues. You know, I don't even remember asking who was jumping onto the Next generation consoles this holiday come to think of it. You don't need to come in here to defend yourself jumping into Next Generation. I understand perfectly why people do because I used to do it too. The point of the thread is too see how many people are holding off jumping in and for what reasons. How many people miss good games coming out because of jumping into next generation at launch, if you go back to those games later or just never have the time or money too. Like I said before, most people are not rich and don't have infinite time to play everything. Whenever I got a launch system I know I was always pretty blinded to everything else (N64 blinded me for a good year) and in the end to me most of the launch titles never ended up being worth that time lost.

anyways...I can't wait for Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing DS, and 20+ DS games that i'm getting this year..It's good to be behind 2 gens :)
 
Well, I am going to wait a while before I enter the next gen. Thier are plenty of old games to get on the PS2 and X-box. I can finally buy a Gamecube instead of buying the next Gen systems. I own some Gamecube games, just haven't bought the system yet. Also, from what has been shown, I am not too impressed with most of the next gen games.

For those reasons, however add the metric ton of rpgs coming out this fall :D
 
Another BIG factor is the consistent rumors that PS3 & Revolution might drop sometime before next fall in the US... Certainly if those come to fruition (which I kinda doubt), it will be tough to justify buying 3 consoles in a 6 month window...

I was caught up in the E3 360 hype and, while I have absolutely no doubt that it will be incredibly successful, I've decided to hold off until next year. There are two many current gen games I want and while I have plenty of money, my wife isn't real keen on the following:

March:
PSP + 1GB card + 3 games = $500
GOW + GT4 + DMC3 + $150

April:
HSG:OT $40

Later this year: - $800
Shadow
Genji
GTA:LCS
Burnout: PSP
SOCOM 3
Jak X
Dragon Quest VIII
Kingdom Hearts 2
Onimusha 4
Castlevania
Sly Cooper 3
The Warriors
MGS3: Subsistence
Radiata Stories
Okami
Resident Evil 4
(I've gotta be getting 3 or 4 other PSP games)

Next Year:
HDTV (preferably 1080p) ~$2,000
PS3 (~$400?)
4 PS3 games ($200-$240)
several Blu-Ray movies

Just way too much money and not enought times to play the games as it is.

Although, I'll probably break down and get the 360 anyway, just for some great next gen graphics a bit earlier.
 
I´m holding off. I´m not interested in Xbox360 and PS3 is unknown when will be released. But I won´t be getting it day 1 anyway. I´ll probably wait for a pricedrop or second hand. Revolution seems to be far in the horizon, this is the one console that I´ll probably be getting on day 1. Probably it will be cheap enough, even at launch. Besides, I´m very interested in the backwards compability.

Up untiul then I´ll be feeding on Zelda, Fire Emblem, maybe King Kong and some DS stuff as well.
