..why would anyone pay 350 bucks for this?
Why do people pay hundreds for sonos? It's a thing.

Speaker quality
Will be there day 1. Looks like a better-than-Sonos-sonos Play:1 and I bought 3 of those at $349.
uhhh you bought 3 Sonos Play 1s at 349 each? You got ripped off. Play 1's are 199 and Sonos is currently running a sale on them for 50 bucks off two of them.
So 350 for 2?
Couple of things to all the bashers in here.
1. This will have the new Siri features built in (machine learning, natural language, etc). So no, it shouldn't just give you bing search results.
2. The speaker actually looks to be doing some cool spatial stuff, automatically adjusting audio to fill the room properly based on the room it's in.
Now yes, we don't know how good it sounds, and how well these features work. But, it's definitely doing more than an Echo device does in terms of sound, so doing an direct comparison isn't really fair yet.
We'll see if these features are actually work as advertised and if the price is justified or not.
So you have to pay the most money for the worst assistant?

You are only going to do so much with a speaker that small, so the spacial stuff is just wasteful tech to me. If I want music to cover a room, I'm using way better speakers.

lol some people in the keynote thread were saying RIP Sonos.
just moronic...
I don't know about the price and initial availability is a bit weird (Just 3 countries? Really Apple?) but I like the name, feature set and the way it looks.
It is. And most people won't understand that and will just say why didn't you just get an Echo for cheaper and more capability. My play 5 is by far the best sounding speaker I've heard in its price range. I'm no hardcore audiophile but it was better than the other options.
Maybe they don't understand Canadian accents, only 'Murican, Australian and Jolly Olde English

Ooo, good to know. Know how long the sale lasts?
June 18th. You can also get 100 off the sub, if your in the market for one.

Lol $350. I'm sure people will buy it, but seriously that has to be like a 1000% markup.
I just had a brief chance to hear Apple's new HomePod alongside a Sonos Play:3 and an Amazon Echo.
On sound quality alone, Apple's new speaker is in a different league to the Echo - a far better sound with crisper vocals and deeper base than Amazon's tubular rival. But then, the Echo is almost half the price of the $350 HomePod. (I wasn't able to try out Siri integration, just hear some music.)
Compared to the Sonos Play:3, which costs a little less than the HomePod at $300, Apple's device was again the superior device. I suspect, however, that a better comparator would be the next Sonos model up, the $500 Play:5 - more testing will be needed on that. Either way, Apple's main advantage here is 360-degree sound, which means listening to music is a richer experience from anywhere in the room compared with the more directional sound of the Sonos.
I also had a chance at WWDC to hear a combination of two HomePods together, which packs quite a punch. Even with a single speaker, it's clear that Apple does not envisage this as a kitchen-countertop speaker or a deskside assistant: this is a high-fidelity sound system that should have the likes of Bang & Olufson and Bose just as worried as Amazon, Google and Sonos.
It was rhetorical. I was defending Sonos with that post.1. Convenience
1a. ease of use - even my wife can use them
1b. ease of setup
2. reliability - its far more reliable than apple air play
3. the plethora of music services available to it. I would be surprised if Apple has nearly as many as sonos does
4. and certainly not the least, they sound, really, really good. You would have to have stereo, amp and dedicated speakers (all of which i have) which could total you easily in excess of 1k to really beat the sound of these things.
I am not full blown audio-phile, where i need power conditioning surge protectors and 100% lossless audio. But i appreciate quality sound, and they sound pretty dang great for the money.

It really depends on how this sounds. I haven't been interested in the echo or google's offering and it doesn't seem like Apple is all that interested offering the same thing either. There is plenty of space in the market for these things and this might be a nice product though no game changer. Not sure Apple would have sustained interest in these things, always feels like a 'hobby' to them.
I thought you might be, but I thought I would throw that out there for those that don't know.FT impressions say it's better than the Play 3: http://blogs.ft.com/the-world/liveb...desktop=true#d1c44adfc6033ee1575ec845ad89aadb

Hmm what's one thing both bose and apple have in common? Both having a reputation for being very overpriced?lol these price comments. GAF seems out of touch.
Do you guys know how much Bose SoundLink II cost? And that is JUST a Bluetooth speaker
$350 is great price for what this is. Seems like a solid system.

It is overpriced, you can get two sonos play 1s or two echos for the price of one of these.
Thing I want to know:
Can the HomePod act as a repeater / mirror or whatever the heck you want to call it?
With AirPlay 2 announcement and the announcement that a bunch of speaker makers will support AirPlay 2, can the HomePod transmit to these speakers the same signal it is playing?
If so.. you really only need one HomePod and then you can buy whatever quality AirPlay 2 supported speaker(s) you want.

There you go. Buy one HomePod and then get a few really good quality AirPlay 2 speakers and you can end up with a damn good multi-room home audio setup.
The HomePod is a smart move from Apple. People are nuts thinking this is DOA.
This is going to fit my needs really really well.
Yea, but are people going to see it that way? Guess we'll find out.the soundlink's are definitely worth their price.
two play 1 or two echos doesn't make sense when this is combining both (or doing better in some cases).
Read my post above you can get two play 1s right now for 350.No you can't. Play 1 is $200.
So you can get Sonos play 1 (200) & Amazon Eco (180). So $380.
So Sonos play 1 has to sound so much better than HomePod to have this as an viable option.
I will say again, HomePod is a solid price, and this is coming from someone who absolutely hate Apple pricing
