They were trying to say what they just said. They made her face more masculine so she could look stronger.
Masculine strong. Feminine weak. Therefore women must be like men. Pay attention and you'll notice it's a trend in western culture.
Again, it's not a matter of the fact that Aloy herself is ugly (though again the fatter face is odd), it's the fact that so many supposed creatives feel the need to make a female character (aka Aloy) more masculine to make her tougher.
This often means being less emotional, and not needing a man for anything and often changing a characters interactions as far as remakes are concerned, such as the flirtatious nature between Carlos and Jill in re3 and basically turning Jill into a bitch for the remake lol.
This is simply not nessacary, you can have a femalle character who can still be hardcore, a fighter, a survivor AND feminine it not only makes the character deeper as they have more range than a doorstop but also more relatable to the audience.
