Horizon: Zero Dawn sold 25 million copies

This leaves 13 million copies for:
  • Horizon: Forbidden West
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered
  • Horizon: Call of the Mountain
  • Lego Horizon Adventures
Presumably 10-11 million of these are Forbidden West, and the remainder are split between the re-releases and spin-offs.

But even so, that's an incredible fall of for Forbidden West, after an equally impressive performance for the first instalment in Zero Dawn

Curious how most of Sony's sequels are selling significantly less than the original games.
well, not if you've played any of'm, imo...
FOMO hype for new IPs, and then people realize how boring their first party games are now.
That's what being 3 years on the market versus 8 years, no significant bundles AND no $40 discounts will do.
Not to mention being on PS Plus Game Catalog just a year after release.

My persona belief on Horizon has always been that the original sold as much as it did because of a combination of heavy bundling and very aggressive discounts. For a few years after it came out, it was impossible to buy a new PS4 and not get Horizon with it. Even if you didn't buy Horizon at launch or didn't get it with your PS4 system, it was available for $20 by the Holiday season of 2017, and permanently discounted just a year after release. Meaning it managed very high sales, but those sales don't necessarily reflect high customer interest or sentiment, and don't necessarily translate into sales for a full-priced sequel sold at a much higher price.

That general antipathy towards Horizon after the novelty of the first game, combined with Sony cutting Forbidden West's legs by putting it on PS+ Extra too quickly, is what is demonstrated by these sales numbers I think.

Forbidden West is beautiful, stunning in fact. Aloy is just a bit of a vanilla character and the storyline has went full
weird sci-fi
so I'm not sure I'll be in day one for the inevitable 3rd game. I'm kind of bored with the universe in all honesty.

The gameplay is really fun and taking down big dino bots is amazing! I remember the E3 reveal and thinking it was so amazing. Maybe I'm just old and jaded, it's a solid franchise, I have platinumed both games but I really want guerilla to move on to a new IP now.

well, that's part of it, of course. but recent sony sequels have been almost uniformly too iterative. more than ever before, if you've already played the first game? you've pretty much already played the sequel...

I bought Zero Dawn twice. PS4 and recently on PC.
Bought Forbidden West PS5 and Call of the Mountain, Then sold the PS5 and the PSVR2. I never finished Call of the Mountain I was an hour or 2 before the end. :(

The 3rd game will need to focus on someone other than Aloy.

Edit-That includes the lego game? I also bought that along side Zero Dawn when I bought them on PC. Have not had a chance to actually play it yet.

Being a cross-gen titles launching during the covid pandemic that caused massive PS5 shortages probably didn't help.

That and the game being more of the same.
Being cross-gen would help with sales, since even with PS5 shortages and low install bases, those games would have massive audiences on the PS4 to sell to. That's not really an excuse for this underperformance at all.

Wait what? The bundle was almost the only way to get a PS5 from 6/2022 to 11/2022 and before that many retailers wouldn't let you buy a PS5 without it.

Unless people were waiting to buy HFW for PS5, but couldn't get a PS5 and by the time they could, there were other games on their radar.

All personal opinions, I don't think there's much to suggest that any of these games had bad WoM. Stuff sells overtime, Horizon Zero Dawn did not sell 25M units in just 3 years.

It doesn't really compare to how HZD was bundled in the later years of PS4.

I remember when zero dawn leaked, it sounded like a fever dream, then the reveal, god damn! I was so fucking hyped. Then at release the game looked soooo fucking good, but I played it and it was a snooze fest. Same ubi formula but in a cool setting. It soured me enough that my intereset for the sequel was close to zero, ha.

I loved the first one with all the lore. The second game was like a Seattle simulator of constantly having to virtue signal and listen to retards. Killed the series for me, but the first was quite amazing with everything going on.

Won't be playing the third one or the seconds DLC.

10 to 11 million isn't a big fall off from 25 million for the 1st game because the sells of the 1st game continued in the lifespan of the 2nd game the big thing is that they have sold over 38 million since 2017 that's only 8 years , KillZone was around since 2004 & might have sold 10 million all together.

Trying to sneeze at 10 million sold is crazy work

well, yeah. &, afa how these sequels sell over time? while stuff sells, some stuff just sells better than other stuff, eh? we shall see...

They are not doing bundles, so sales are down.

Also, the retail channels are stuffed with used copies that come after first wave of players. That simply halts new game sales after a point of time.

To be fair to the sequels they've held their prices much, much better than the originals. The original Horizon, God of War, Spider-Man and GT Sport especially were less than £20 in the UK by their first Christmas then for years. The sequels have been mostly £40 or above so far or on PS Plus Premium.

It's been out an extra five years to be fair.
they also put it on PS+ just a year after release and the insomniac leak shows them lamenting how it basically killed the sales of the game. They sold 8.3 million units in the first year, outpacing Horizon 1.

This actually hampered sales a bit according to Sony. IIRC they estimated they lost around $80 million in revenue due to the addition on ps plus.

Horizon fw has to be sacrificed for them to learn it was a bad idea to put there games on ps plus early.

One of my fave games ever, but then again Im a big fan of weird sci-fi.

Why? Both of the games sold well. 11 million copies sold is very good and that's including the fact that they added it to PS+ extra after a year I think it was or close to a year. This was a studio that was making Killzone. I'm sure Sony is ecstatic that they are now selling games that can sell over 10m+.

I do think they should continue the series after this with a new character but I see no reason to abandon Aloy.

This site is so weird sometimes with sales. Metaphor sales 1 million and people are through the roof cheering it on and saying Square needs to look at that they are doing. Horizon FW sales over 10M and people are like "They need to change the MC".

Hey, probably sounded like I was shitting on it and wasn't meant to be that way. it's very cool the way the story has went but it was kind of a curve ball I think that maybe is too much for some people.

I like the games, the first more than the second but I think I would need to see some real different biomes (what more can they do?) or something else to really get me back and excited for this franchise. It's solid for sure, I don't see the overly negative hate for it. It's one of the best looking and playing games without a shadow.

All they had to do was make Aloy more attractive and given her a better personality and the games would have sold more than 50 million with the same gameplay and story. Add some sexier outfits as DLC for $$ on top of that and you got few more millions.
