I haven't seen any of the classics, i should download some. Where do i begin?

I have not seen V/H/S 2 either, is it better than the first?

I've seen the exorcist, and it was actually pretty frightening, looking past the aged special effects. I will look into the others, thank you!

I liked V/H/S 2 more than the first one. Has some good short stories. Has some bad ones too. Definitely check out The Thing. The first Alien is basically sci-fi horror. Also check out the old Night of the living dead, original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, 28 Days Later... damn there are so many to list for someone new to this. Look up a top 100 list online and try a few that sound interesting to you.

I really wish I was new to the horror genre. I've seen almost everything and it's getting hard to find new stuff I like.

I think it was pretty good on its own, if you tried not to compare it too much with the original. I didn't really like the wisecracks and comedic aspects, although they luckily weren't as pervasive as in ED2. It might have benefitted the mood, if there had been more silent parts, without the orchestral music pounding at the background.

Anyone here enjoy horror comics? A friend of mine writes a comic called Witch Doctor. It's published by Image Comics under Robert Kirkman's imprint Skybound. Definitely worth a read if you're looking for a different take on classic horror creatures/concepts.

Why the long case?
I think I am finally going to start posting in here more often. A lot of GAFs horror/slasher related threads are filled with Jason X/JGTH fans, so naturally I didn't think there would be much for me to contribute conversation wise.

Now that I see there are some late 70's - 80's slasher fans in here, I am pretty happy. I love almost all horror movies from that time, but mainly slashers like Friday the 13th and Halloween. Even the cheesy sequels, just not really the 90's stuff.

The Howling movies were all bad, including the original.

I understand people have different tastes, but it's weird to hear one of the all-time classics of the genre to be put-down. I personally think The Howling and An American Werewolf in London are still the best representatives of the genre, which is kinda sad, as they came out in 1981. Dog Soldiers and Wolf were pretty good as well, but I think they both lacked in atmosphere compared to the 80's films. The former was more action-oriented, and the latter went towards drama. Not to mention, that the CGI transformation scenes in some of the films/series just don't work as well as those over twenty year old practical effects.

It's pretty similar situation with scifi horror, which is also one of my favorite genres, where none of the more recent films can't hold a candle to the older classics, like Alien, The Thing and Event Horizon. I think one of the rare exceptions is Sunshine, eventhough it's not a horror movie in its entirety.

I just watched some trailers of old horror films, that I've seen when I was about ten years old. It's weird to see them now, and to think I've been deeply scared by some of them, especially The Alchemist. I actually remember wanting to quit watching it, as I was in a complete terror during a scene, where a transformed man was stalking a woman inside a cabin in the woods, and trying to get inside. I kinda miss that feeling now. In retrospect, all of them seem pretty amusing. I remember some of my friends warning me about It Came Without Warning, as it was supposed to be so scary back then. =D

It Came Without Warning (1980)
http://youtu.be/eGyqkMyqWDU

The Alchemist (1983)
http://youtu.be/o9C1n4bwDss

Sisters (1973)
http://youtu.be/XvsixXqC-gM

Love the narrator in the trailers, BTW.

I just got done watching Evil Dead (2013).

I really enjoyed it and felt it was different (but still familiar) enough from the originals to stand on its own two feet.

The first one just got a blu ray release from Shout Factory, is a great release.

yeah i remember reading on bloody disgusting that they are planning to remake evil dead 2 aswell plus army of darkness and possibly a crossover. i always thought of evil dead as horror and the follow ups as horror-comedy.

i kinda liked the orchestral music, it reminded me of drag me to hell (raimi movie).

they also seemed to switch the mist with constant rain which was a pretty good choice imo.

i dont usually pre order movies but i caved and bought the steelbook recently.

Well, I'm personally not that interested in the remakes of the sequels, if they follow their comedic themes.

The music was ok, but it was perhaps too dominant, and ever-present element. I liked the original's more twisted and sombre music more. That being said, I'm somewhat interested in how the remake feels at home, as the audio was really loud in the theater, as usual.

Finally got around to watch...

[REC]: For most of the movie I was thinking "this is good, but maybe not as good as people make it out to be"... then the ending happened. The levels of creepiness during that last part are off the charts.

Oh oop, just made a new thread for the trailer.

The the whole saga is going to be released on Blu Ray as well. I'm so happy! :D

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
Just saw V/H/S 2....meh. First one was much better. The only remotely creepy shots in the whole movie were in the 4th one I think? The one by the lake. When
the kids jump in the water at the beginning and you see one of those alien things just swimming, and then later on when the sister's boyfriend gets jumped from the side

Other than that the movie was definitely sub-par.

3rd segment was creepy. It may not have scared you, but it was factually creepy.

I'm settling in for my first ever viewing of The Thing. I don't know why I never got around to it, but now I am and on blu ray and my nice new TV. I might sign up for a trial of the Creeper video service since it has a month trial.

damn you, I'd kill to go back in time and watch The Thing for the first time again - one of my favorite horror movies of all time. (John Carpenter version, obviously.) I thought that the 2011 remake/reboot was actually pretty decent too, despite the unusual amount of hate most fans of the '82 version seem to have for it.

American Werewolf was amazing, and the 80's was my time, but I never understood the love for The Howling. Extremely boring film with awful pacing, the only highlight being the transformation stuff, which I think was done better in other 80's films. It also lacked any real horror. And the sequels were all trash.

Had a strange urge to watch Stigmata, and realize that not only is it not on Netflix but it is not even out on bluray?

First viewing of The Thing was awesome. Such straight up gross and amazing puppets and effects. So good. Halloween has always been one of my favorite movies, but I think The Thing might be better and Carpenter's real opus.

My new TV has the app for Creeper, which is a dedicated horror movie streaming app. Does anyone have it and would they recommend it if just for a trial?

So after watching brainstorm, 2001, beyond the black rainbow and the serpent and the rainbow I was all into making some trippy practical effects sooooo I made a tiny little movie as a test. It's really rough and nothing more than some creepy imagery but I'm pretty happy with how the effects came out.

If you promise to go easy on me ill post it when it's finished processing.

Have you guys ever made your own horror movies?

Edit: that was fast!

Check out The Fog (original). I don't think I'd put it above The Thing or Halloween, but it's up there with those. In The Mouth of Madness too.

I pre-ordered my Chucky Blu-Ray box set. I'm really excited for Curse, but however it turns out, like $60 for all of them is nothing to be sniffed at.

Since we're talking decades, I've got to say I'm a big fan of the fifties, seventies and eighties, although every decade since the thirties has good stuff.

I have a question that's a little off topic, but I figured there'd be a lot of audience spill-over and I'd like to get some feedback on interest.

I'm thinking of putting together a big B Movie thread that would be a little more general and cover things like the grindhouse/exploitation era all the way up to the 80s straight to VHS boom.

Since I'm mostly playing catch up with these kinds of movies, I've got a ton to watch and would love to discuss them with like-minded viewers and all the related threads I could find via search are ancient and were short lived.

So is anyone else still actively watching B Movies and interested in participating in a thread dedicated to them?

I love horror pretty much all the way up through the 90s, with an exceptional love for the 80s.
I think after the 90s filmmakers somehow forgot what the point was and half went the gore porn route but it was gore with no point and those that did not go the gore porn route seemed to feel the need to start treating audiences like complete idiots and feeling the need to explain everything and almost like they are lowering themselves to make horror and they will only do horror if they try and make some higher meaning in it somewhere or again explain everything out.
But obviously there are always stand outs.

I think there is a pretty sizable following for the grindhouse thing, though not my thing some of my interests cross over. B movies always find alot of love and I think you will find alot of cross over love.

The remake of Maniac was fantastic. That soundtrack!

Also loved the homage with
Frank standing in front of the car door with the knife and scalp that mimics the original film's poster.

Could be interesting.

Marathoning Horror tv shows this weekend I think.
Trying to decide whether to start with Werewolf the series or Freddy's Nightmares
One is a recording I did myself off of a Chiller and the other I got off of Ebay a while back.

Freddy's Nightmares is pretty amazing. A lot of big actors prefame appear in it. I can vaguely remember an episode with baby Brad Pitt. Haven't seen Warewold- let me know how it is.

I really didn't care for Triangle when I saw it.
The main gimmick has been done so many times in other movies.
But after giving it some time and thought, I felt it was pretty decent.
The story of the Greek god the ship was named after made the movie stand out, IMO.

I feel the same way about this movie. Everything is really tight and although I know the ending, it's still a ride when rewatching. I'd say it's among the best of its kind.

The bit where
the one girl from the dating site is describing what she thought Frank was going to look like
was another nice reference to the original, too.

Werewolf the series was pretty damned good for its time.
Rick Baker did the Werewolf effects, it was pretty effective.

I'm looking for a movie which had a trailer last year. It's a creepy-kids type flick and the trailer is a bunch of kids poking a corpse with sharp sticks in slow-motion. I can't remember the name of it but it looked super creepy. Sound familiar to anyone?

Machinist over Jacobs Ladder? oh boy, I feel like the only person that didn't like that movie.

Watched that movie "Hollow" a couple of others in here have recommended on Netflix. It's decent but I really didn't get that part where
the two (not a couple) were naked in the woods making out, then they put the camera on them and the one dude starts screaming or something?
It was solid I guess, kinda weird.

also never seen Amityville II, so I'm gonna put that on my list to watch
