House GOP may pass Senate's "skinny repeal" outright. CALL YOUR SENATORS.

As is customary after a dramatic late-night thread:

But how?

Yeah, you'll have to divert 0.1% of military spending to something that makes life better for people who don't vote you. That's existential dread for Republicans.

Not that I would dislike single payer, but let's not kid ourselves, it would take a lot more than that. It would take substantial tax increases across the board, and the movement of military money (which I'm cool with).

Healthcare is expensive, and reform is complicated.

You mean deprive the president of his weekend golf trips?

Sometimes i question my sanity when i see people say single payer will tank the economy and i think to myself... if only we stop playing world police and divert some of that 600 billion yearly budget back to other programs.

I think Nate Silver has a great take here:

Nate Silver said:
Other than thinking that this is obviously a really big deal — both from a policy and a political perspective — I want to reserve some judgment until I see more reporting about what happened tonight. To what extent was this McConnell’s failure? Or Trump’s? Or Ryan’s? (Ryan could have been more reassuring to McCain and other holdouts.) To what extent was it a failure of the overall process, because the legislation was badly conceived? (Maybe the bill was lucky to get as close as it did?) Why did McCain vote “no”? I have more questions than answers, and we’re not in a position to answer very many of those questions yet.

This could lead to a lot of interesting stuff (where does the blame go? Who does Trump take aim at first? Who do the people who wanted this to go through get angry at? All of them?), and would make for great viewing if there weren't so many lives on the line (including some in my own family). The next few hours/days may reveal a lot of deep fractures that have only been hinted at so far.

How many failures will it take for mitch to sink in to the thought that nofuckinbody wants him to be messing on people's wellbeing? It really feels like its single pay system or bust.

I make a habit of checking foxnews.com whenever there's a major GOP loss to see what they'd rather be talking about and almost every time it's something to do with an Obama "Unmasking Scandal". Without fail, that's their cover story lately whenever something like this hits.

I'm afraid to ask, but what the hell are they going on about with that?

Susan Powers asked the CIA who some [redacted] US citizens communicating with foreign spies/agents under surveillance were. They turned out to be members of the Trump campaign.

That's it. The request itself is a total non-story, but Fox et al. are treating it as if the Obama administration had it out for Trump while ignoring the whole Trump's team communicating with foreign agents bit.

Hey, know what would make for better recruits? Healthier people. So single payer can also be beneficial to defense as well.
Do you honestly expect republicans about the soldiers in this? Their train of thought ends with single payer benefiting poor people and minorities (of course EVERYONE benefits, but can't have the poors and/or blacks have a better life!)

Not from her state, but I am going to write her and Collins heart felt thanks.

Same here, I'll send them a note just so they know that other women across the US appreciate them standing up against the tide of awfulness on the Republican side, if even for just one night.

Six dimensional chess theory warning:

Most of the GOP knew their Obamacare repeals were politically bad. But they spent the last few months playing hot potato, because being known as the one who killed Obamacare repeal would kill you with the base.

So why not stage some quality political theatre that ultimately places the blame on a senator in his last term, and with a reputation for being a maverick?

Ryan totally screwed the pooch when he declared the House to be in Martial Law this morning. That sent the message there was an alternate plan in place that did not include Committee. Of course the problem was they ran out of time as far as august recess so he was basically forced to announce the sleaze plan ahead of time.

Nah, McConnell is still trying to have a go. They just fucked up.

Flake and Heller are also the most vulnerable GOP senators in 18. What idiots they are for voting for this.

Flake, at least, isn't in a good position no matter what. He's threatened by primaries from the right and losing the general from the left. He probably thought challenges from the right were a bigger threat and he could muddle through the general which is more than a year away, but the fact that the GOP forced senators into making an unpopular choice like this speaks to the party's dysfunction.

Mcconnel deserves an emmy if this were true.

Absolutely not. They dragged Pence over there and blew it big time. Leadership look like fools right now. There's no way anyone drew this up.

Getting rid of all of the middle men and being able to control costs of procedures and medications by taking what they actually cost into account instead of charging as much as possible will mean the cost isn't as high as it is now.

I can still barely breathe. This has been a brutal night... how I should have felt on election night, really. As usual, we should all be extremely thankful that the ruling party is full of idiots and that they're unable to do anything whatsoever with a unified Republican government.
Literally this happened

Wrestling gif for eeeeeeeeeeverything.

Oh, and +1 for "European healthcare" please.

3 Republicans and 48 Democrats let the American people down. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. Watch!

I'm sure every hospital, specialist, and general practitioner would appreciate timely and full payment 100% of the time as well, which would lower costs.

No one loses on purpose. They rolled Pence out, McConnell was exuberant until the very moment McCain voted. They expected to win tonight. This was an utter failure for senate republicans, specifically McConnell's leadership.

I ran into John McCain as we walked underground ]to the Senate for the final vote. Someday I'll get to tell my grandkids what he said to me.

Wonder what he said to him, but looks like McCain got a spine.. for now.
I need to know

That would be one damned terrible bill if that were the case, then.

You're correct, but that cost goes entirely into the public sector. Again, I'm not against it, indeed I'm for it (or some sort of UHC system, don't really care which), but it would cost a bit more than moving a tiny bit out of the military. It'd still be at least 10% of our GDP, maybe more, and that's billions/trillions of dollars.

Collins/Murkowski/McCain are heroes. They saved millions and did the right thing in the face of intense pressure. Save the questions and shit for another time. Right now just enjoy this and those delicious tears.

Oh, I know. I pay about 40% of my income in taxes. But the peace of mind is worth it. Knowing I won't be financially ruined by a hospital stay or lose my insurance if I lose my job - that's bliss.

Pretty obvious he intended to make a very hard statement on the way McConnell shat on senate precedent and decorum, and I don't blame him. McCain is a creature of the senate above all, process matters to him. That's what tonight was about, and why he did it like this.

Remember when he said changing the voting rules for Supreme Court justices was the death of democracy and then voted for it and also voted for the judge

But yes, it's important to push this lie that process is why he does things

America can afford it.

Very true, it's not cheap but it's necessary and it's feasible, we are the richest country in the world if there was a will it would be done. It needs to be done.

McCain also could have just said "I'm not voting for this" hours ago when he was asked instead of thinking he's a fucking Sorkin character and telling people to watch the show well after midnight.

What makes you think McConnell wouldn't have called off voting on the bill and hope to wait out McCain's cancer? He held the SC seat for the slim chance of Trump winning and it worked out for him before.

Can someone clarify why the GOP senator was saying that the next repeal bill can't use reconciliation and need 60 votes? If that's the case, and McCain suckered McConnell into holding the vote, he will die with my eternal gratitude, regardless of the thousands of other votes of his I disagreed with.
