How bad graphics needs to be before you can't tolerate it?

I have more an issue with graphical glitches like screen tearing and clipping than with actual graphics.

2 months ago I played Metal Gear Solid 1 for the first time and despite how it's aged, it was one of the deepest and richest game experiences I've ever had.

never been too fussed about graphics. Usually turn everything way the fuck down to insure stability when I play games on my computer. Early polygon pop-in (someone mentioned Driver) is a bit shit though, but that falls more into the general area of input delay, frame rate and other stability/playability issues.

The game just has to be right for what it's doing. I couldn't care less about graphics. The only thing that I'll catch myself noticing is when games are supposed to have GREAT graphics and I see texture problems n' stuff. I only ask for consistency. It was like when episodes of Spongebob would have real life objects and people, that always bugged me. One of my favorite types of graphics are the prerendred environments and polygon chacacters with objects that could be interacted with standing out a TON like resident evil, Dino crisis, parasite eve from the play station era.

So long as it stays consistent I've never cared, unless it just looks low quality for whatever era it's from. Poop is poop lol, and I can't STAND cell shading. That is the only reason I don't play the new street fighter or marvel vs Capcom, I HATE cell shading. As far as I'm concerned, windwaker is the worst game ever made.

Ohhhhhh yea. That's one of the games I can't beat enough.

Depends on various factors. But in general I can't stand:

Excessive jaggies (ie. Tekken Tag Tournament 2)
Ugly art (ie. Kingdom of Amalur - can't believe I played that just to get Chakram Launcher for ME3)
Badly designed characters (ie. DmC)
Old techs (I can't play many PS1 games anymore and forget about Atari games)

If everything deteriorates to the point that I can't distinguish gameplay objects from BG from characters, etc it's a pile of fail.

But this can happen with technically good, super high poly graphics just as easily as super low poly barf.

i totally get earlier 3D complaints...even some of 3D on DS is just awful, jaggies moreso than res. i can go much further back so long as the gameplay's good, kinda standard answer here it seems

and yeah Oblivion example is a perfect one for me, its poor art style (DA2 as well) that dates/kills the experience in my eyes

Screen tearing and I really can't stand retro looks. I played enough lousy 2d sprites 20 years ago.

aw man what
these are not good answers at all, screen tearing aside!

I can pretty much tolerate all types of Graphics. I can go back and play N64/PS1 games with no problem. I don't need to have AF, 50x AA, 90000X90000 resolution, with 500 fps to enjoy a game.

As long as the core game is playable, I'm fine with it. I just replayed bushido blade for psx and that game is not exactly a great looker.

In terms of modern gaming I'd day that inconsistent frame rate and tearing are my biggest bugbears. I'd rather drop details to maintain a good frame rate.

Really depends on the platform and type of game, and maybe the production value of it. Like if a current gen 3D game were to look all glitchy and blocky, then I might have a problem with it, but on something like a PS1 era game I would expect that, especially if it's a really big game with large environments like Soul Reaver, or something as detailed as Metal Gear Solid. It also depends on what about the game looks bad, like if it's just character models looking a little rough in comparison to really well done environments, then I'm mostly fine with it, but if the whole thing is a mess, maybe I'd dislike the look of it.

I'm usually pretty accepting of older game's graphics because I know it won't naturally look as good as a modern game, and I actually have a particular fondness for 2D sprite based games like KOF or Metal Slug. Also I usually focus on the game itself, so if it looks rough but the game is really solid and enjoyable, then I don't care too much about the graphics, like MGS as someone else said. I don't recall too many instances where I've thought a game looks so bad graphically that I can't bear to play it.

Basically it would have to be a graphical disaster for me to just write it off instantly as unplayable, like pop in, glitches, terrible design, poor production value and jagged visuals with constant screen tearing. Basically it would have to be a strain on the eyes or actually impede gameplay to be considered intolerable.

I'm not counting issues like art design and style, because I believe they are different things to consider than graphics.

Depends on the art style, how compelling the game is, and the performance.

Performance is more important than sheer graphical fidelity most of the time I feel, I'll take a blocky 60 FPS game over a rounder game with an extremely erratic framerate. Two Worlds 360 is a great example of running straight over my line, it even gave me a headache just playing the damn demo.

As long as it's fun, I don't really care what it looks like.

I mean, sure, it looking nicer is preferable...but not necessary for me. I still think a lot of old games look good, even 32X, Saturn, PlayStation, and N64 games...which I actually often tend to prefer to play over most modern stuff.

I don't need no fancy high definition graphics, just good, fun gameplay. That is the only thing that really matters to me.

The only graphics I have a hard time stomaching are the jagged ass polygons of the 32 bit generation.

Oddly enough I can handle virtually anything on the N64, mostly because it doesn't seem to be as jagged, pixelated, or shimmer as much when the perspective changes, but others are just hard to stomach.

I remember playing the first Twisted Metal back when I had only the SNES, and thinking it didn't look better than SNES titles because everything looked awful.

Come on, if the framerate isn't tolerable that affects the gameplay.

Take it from me - I played through Alone in the Dark on 3D0 just a few years ago.

Framerate doesn't bug me much of the time...hell, I'm used to my PC's chugging along trying to play some games. Hah. As long as the game is fun, then some framerate issues don't really get to me, but I can easily understand how it'd bother others.

I never played Alone in the Dark on the 3DO, so I can't comment on that. I only played a PC demo for it, like...over a decade ago, I think. I never owned a 3DO, though I occasionally think about getting one, since I really like collecting consoles and games. I'm hoping to eventually own every gaming console ever released...

Deadly Premonition is one my favorite games ever, so...I guess that covers it. I don't really care about graphics if other elements from the game are good.

Framerate bothers me when it slows the action down from what it was intended to run at.

N64 games on original hardware is painful for me because most games look and run very poorly. I have no issues with 2D titles on pre-N64 hardware.

I know, and I'm not exactly a fan of it, but if the game game is fun, I can easily look past it.

Perfect Dark on the N64, for instance, is well known for having terrible framerate issues, especially in multiplayer...and yet, it's easily still my favorite first-person shooter of all time. The game is too damn fun to let framerate get to me.

Maybe it's just 'cause I'm really easygoing and am rarely ever bothered by anything. I'm also just really, really used to this sort of thing. Hah.

Speaking of N64, I'm literally playing GoldenEye 007 on mine right as I'm typing this. I was going to play Perfect Dark, but GoldenEye 007 was already on, so...I went with that. Plus, I just started a new file on a harder difficulty, so I wanna continue that.

I found the framerate of Perfect Dark, regardless of settings, to be decent.

I think the complaints about it are overblown. In single player it ran at a better rate than any other FPS I had played at the time. In multiplayer it only became cumbersome when there were a lot of explosions going on at the same time, but still enjoyable.

This is a true story - I got an Xbox for Halo so my friends and I could progress beyond Perfect Dark and Goldeneye. A short while later we were right back to playing Goldeneye because it just wasn't as well designed in multiplayer versus.

If you want bad framerate though... Alone in the Dark is the kind of game where it really does hold the design back. And this is coming from someone who still plays Goldeneye regularly.

I'll look into Alone in the Dark, as I've always been interested in it, but I don't know know much about the 3DO version.

Also, yes...Rare's N64 shooters can't really be beat. Hah. My friends and I had tons of regular game parties everyday usually consisting of those, Mario Party 2, Mario Kart 64, and NBA Jam on the SNES. We'd all take turns playing, and it was a total blast. I moved away recently, though, so there's been none of that in a while...
