How can Microsoft win back your heart for XB1?

Probably.

But not if they stick to their current strategy with heavy focus on Kinect, TV etc.

I will have to see how the whole Kinect thing developes. If it turns out I can pretty much ignore it, I may get an Xbone in two or three years for a lower price, if Kinect turns out to be essential for most games (Xbone versions), I might not buy one ever.

Personnally it's not even what they can do, it's just that what they call a "console" isn't talking to me, it's not giving me that gaming vibe. I just see a big black TV box that has the option to play games, I don't see it as a console... it has no Gaming identity, to me, a gamer.

You get that what you are talking about is actually marketing here, not games?

They've marketed it as an all around entertainment box. Sony have marketed theirs as a gaming box.

Both will have games, both will have entertainment aps. It's just empty noise.

If you are a gamer, your only concern should be whether you wanted enough of the launch year games to justify a purchase.

Nope. If developers know that only a fraction of Xbox One users own a Kinect, they won't create features or experiences that leverage it enough to require mandatory use.

You're putting words in my mouth.

I would still have a Kinect, I'd just unplug it. I never asked for a Kinect-less version... Just to be able to unplug and play.

Microsoft already dropped the Kinect requirement. You can unplug it and put it away if you want to.

Drop BS "you gotta subscribe to XBL to go to youtube" etc crap for starters.
Realize you are selling inferior hardware hence need to address that with price / better bundles.

Please link confirmation. I might get one if I never have to plug in a Kinect.

This was confirmed back in August, you're a little behind ;)

The way I read that is Kinect must be connected to download the "180 patch".

I guess I can wait for the second generation.

Totally and to me, as a gamer, insiting on that, they failed on that part, they didn't sell me a console to play games, they sold me a Tivo clone with W8 OS that has the feature to play games. Call me silly, but it's important to me to know that a company has a Gaming identity and right now only Sony and Nintendo have it. Of course that can change in the future for Microsoft, not condemning them.

Finally that part last part is totally irrelevant to me, I don't care at all about launch titles it's the long run that's more important.

They really cant. Microsoft still holds thevisions. They only changed becuse they were forced too. I might be getting one in a far away future tho depending on exclusives. But Microsoft is still a very anti cosumer company when it comes to gaming. No changes can change that fact.

I will never ever support a company that wants me to be online, to play and use my console offline.

Things they could tho;

- Turn live into something like steam.
- - - Want to go digital in the future? Start now. Convince us! Give us cheap ass games and many sales.
- No kinect and cheaper price.
- No tv restrictions etc outside USA. (Might be impossible)
- Gaming > Entertainment

As many others have said, price cut and no kinect, depending on the success of the console I see this as a potential move by MS anyway, then I'll be on board.

They never had me but if I was envious of one thing on the 360, it was Live Arcade. Xbox 360's ease of development and their entire ecosystem gave rise to a lot of great little games. Sony has managed to reverse that and I'm happy staying where I am. Looking back at the games I bought a 360 for and how I was disappointed with all of them, it would have to be some catastrophic event like Sony going out of business and selling their PS brand to MS that would make me get a Xbone.

It's not just marketing when the media focus has directly impacted the XB1's design and pricing.

Forced Kinect, a mandate for 8GB of RAM early forcing the ESRAM/DDR3 solution (which itself forced a weaker GPU), and a greater percent of first party financial investment going to media features (NFL, new Halo show, Quantic Dream's simultaneous show/game deal) versus games.

Sony will have almost all the same entertainment apps, sure, but the efforts of Sony's first party management are entirely focused on games, the hardware design was entirely focused on games, and they'll likely continue to deliver on the games front.

Microsoft meanwhile has their efforts divided more substantially and will therefore likely see that transition to their offerings as the generation goes on.

Ultimately the problem here is that Microsoft is trying to offer a media box when they themselves have no worthwhile media to present on it, so they're paying for exclusives and trying to ramp up their own media production efforts. Meanwhile Sony Computer Entertainment is part of a larger conglomerate that has most of it's other divisions focused on every other aspect of media. Sony Pictures is a significant player in movie and television programming. Sony Music is one of the biggest publishers i their industry. Kaz Hirai runs all of them now and is clearly looking to leverage that to the PS4's advantage.

Anyhow, to the OP's question. For me personally they need to take Kinect out of the box, prove that DRM isn't coming back as soon as they've got the hook in a few million consumers, and most importantly show meaningful 1st party software production. I could probably live with them not removing Kinect if the price comes down relatively quickly on the hardware, but if there are lingering concerns about DRM returning I'm out, and that only happens if they show much greater support for 1st party development at E3 2014 than they did at E3 2013.

Tell the PR team to stop pissing on us and calling it rain. I would rather they delay the system and get all the elements in a competitive state rather than push an undercooked cooked meal on us and keep telling us it is delicious.

Bit of a weird term in saying they might earn my heart lol. No company does that now, and the only ones who ever did were Sega in the Mega Drive days (I was younger than 10) or Squaresoft in the late PS1 era :P

Anyway Microsoft need to do the same thing I've been wanting them to do for ages. Just provide me plenty of worthwhile exclusives and I'm in eventually. I wasn't one of the people that were completely turned off my the Always Online and No used games thing. I've been consistent even back during the Adam Orth escapade.

Just give me games

You have a valid point about their dedication to the “snap” mode being in the console leading to their 8GB DDR3 architectural decision, which lead to the eSRAM and Move Engines, the weaker GPU and the rest. I would say to be fair to them, that if we knew the leaks about Sony’s console, they knew them with greater certainty and at that point in time the PS4 has 2GB GDDR5, and even when they had the chance to still make changes only 4GB GDDR5 and they probably still felt fairly comfortable.

When you consider the leaked specs of Sony’s machine at the point they put these ideas in stone, they probably felt they had the more powerful console at the time, despite the weaker GPU when Sony were targeting so little RAM (high bandwidth RAM or not) back at the time they made these choices. I don’t think for a second MS would have made the choices they did if they thought Sony would end up with 8GB GDDR5. What happened, happened, Sony gambled and got lucky and MS are stuck with a slightly less capable machine, but I don’t think it’s fair to say they actively chose to have a weaker machine to accommodate these advanced features.

But I would add this for your consideration – I see “snap” mode, and indeed the rest of the supposed “non-gaming” features of the console as very pro-gamer – they create an ecosystem where you are always able and always ready to game whenever your friends are.

- None of your mates are online so you switch to TV and watch for a bit, then a notification comes in that someone is online and wants to play – you are right in. Without TV being part of the UI you have to make a choice – am I in the gaming part of my TV experience, or the TV part of the TV experience – they become the same thing so you are always there in the console when people are ready to play with you.

- Snap mode – that could mean a video chat during a co-op game, a game guide snapped to the side of the screen (that apparently MS are pushing to be mandatory for all games), or it could mean that you don’t have to leave the game when you or your partner has a TV show they want to watch – just snap it to the side and keep gaming.

- Kinect for me is the console automatically signing me in, swapping button configs so I never again spaz out because someone left my sticks un-inverted, or miss a scoring chance in FIFA because a friend switched to classic controls and I spoon it over the bar. It means video chat as well as just voice chat with co-op partners. It means motion capture in project spark. It means voice commands stripping away pause screen admin. It means universal remote functionality that in itself would cost more than Kinect adds to the price. I think people are being way too narrow minded about what Kinect can do for the gamer without even considering motion control games (which I also have no interest in at all).

My bottom line is games are games though, and the launch year is all that matters to me, as I can only afford to buy one console a year really and intend to buy both eventually. Right now the X1 looks better for games, and it has a load of added value for everyone (including gamers) with the features it has added.

They can dance for me. I want them to personally come to my house and perform a riverdance for me. And then maybe I'll consider it.

Don Mattrick would probably have tripped over your coffee table, spilled your drink into an electrical circuit and caused a house fire. Xbox's one man disaster.

They literally can't. They lost me at RROD, and I swore to never look back after all the draconian Xbone bullshit. I don't care how much they recanted, their intention was anti-consumer and it still is.

I wasn't a big fan of the 360 and I totally regret buying it, but Microsoft could pull me back in if they took advantage of Rare's IPs. A REAL Banjo game would be a start. Something with Conker would be great too.

Also, don't force me to buy Kinect.

I'm buying one for the exclusives and one for the multi-platform titles. And probably a new PC. I like games. Not console manufacturers.

One of my best friends is working on a next gen game (audio programmer), and he says the difference isn't nearly as big as the media wants it to be. I trust him over GAF warriors and sketchy articles.

He would probably check your internet speed before the whole thing. If you have a slow connection he would just tell you to don't bother and stick to the 360.

No Titanfall for you, boy.

Before launch nothing really, but in the next year release a model without Kinect much cheaper, get rid of entertainment Apps that are free everywhere else behind Gold paywall. That would be a good start, invest more developing own games not just buying exclusives and Football deals, I love some Football but I can watch about 6 games already a week and I don't have to pay any extra Football service package, that's enough for most fans and fans that want more have places that they been getting it for years already.

They cant. The console is to weak, has no real concept and no idea what it acually wants. First parties are non existent, nearly all IPs that made 360 so great suffer from franchise fatigue and their approach to get the core gamer by devolping great games and especially jrpgs at the begining of the 360 era was impressive. Nothing is left of that. They rely on 3rd parties and lost their biggest talent. Microsoft won my heart with the 360 but this time its really hard for me to decide whats worse right now - Nintendo or Microsoft...

Honestly they most likely have me back now that I can play without kinect, but I'm not getting a new system until next fall so I'm pretty much taking the wait and see approach.

It's not about the console but the people in charge. They dont have an aboyes or yosp over there demonstrating that they care about games and gamers. Everyone at MS feels like they learnt their PR buzzwords and can't wait to leave the industry and work in a different industry. If i felt more comfortable with their leaders, i would have way less of an issue.

Announce FF7 HD Remake, Panzer Dragoon Saga HD Remake, and Shining Force 3 Complete HD Remake. It'll never happen though so nah there is no hope.
