How Did You 'Get Into' Your Favourite Band?

Windle Poons

Made a crappy phPBB forum once ... once.
Couple of ones for me...

Genesis - July 1987 - my sister telling me if I wanted to 'listen to something different' to catch it on Radio One (all big concerts were on the radio in those days) and just being totally blown away by them. Phil Collins gets a lot of stick and I don't know why because Genesis are / were top tier.

Pink Floyd - my friend used to give me a lift to work and he had their Pulse CD on repeat and it just grew and grew on me.

What say you?

They're not my top band, but they're one I really like: Three Days Grace. Went to Florida in August 2005 on a family holiday. My dad bought me a PSP with a game, some movies, and the PSP also came with a sorta demo disc. It had the song 'Home' on it by Three Days Grace and after hearing that I've listened to them ever since.

Not necessarily my fav bands of all time, but in the late 80s everyone in school was listening to U2, INXS, Pet Shop Boys and New Order. So I jumped on. Since then, out of them I only listen to old school U2. Rest I bailed though occasionally I might do a YT of True Faith or Domino Dancing.

Subordinate/friend heard me blasting Arch Enemy from my phone at work (by accident, ear buds weren't connecting properly) some years ago, recommended Orbit Culture as an up-and-coming band. Been listening to them constantly since. Quite the fortunate accident that, good chance I wouldn't have heard of them otherwise.

When I was 10, my friends brother put on some music by a new up and coming band he'd heard about. The opening of the first song blew me away and, even though my tastes in music have changed over the years, I've been a fan ever since and it's still one of my favorites albums. Welcome to the jungle burned itself into brain and appetite for destruction will always be one of my desert islands discs.

My favourite though, is Brandi Carlile and I got into her after I got given an old hard drive and the previous owner forgot to wipe it. Among other stuff there was a folder of MP3s, including her debut album. I gave it a listen and really enjoyed it so ended up getting buying every album since on vinyl.

A gift from my big cousin, the Iron Maiden Live After Death live album

a revelation :) , after that i jumped between different and extreme sides too

I don't have a specific 'favorite band' but I got into my musical style in high school. I made some friends, one of them had an older brother in a ska/punk band, and I went to one of their shows with everyone.

The rest was history. I branched out from there to other genres, but that's what set my out on my tastes. Even ended up forming 2 bands of my own and enjoyed playing shows, it was a lot of fun.

This was the song that my friend's brother's band covered, that really got me into it. Kinda simple but I hadn't experienced anything like it at the time. The energy, the horns, fast tempos, etc.

When I was 9 years old I went shopping with my aunt and older cousin.

I bought myself the Star Wars soundtrack and my cousin got the new KISS album Love Gun.

A week later he let me borrow it and my ears fell in love 😁

My dad was a really good self-taught guitarist and introduced me to Hendrix and SRV. Similarly, my sister introduced me to Pantera as they played the local bar scene she frequented before they blew up. My buddy Lakeith turned me onto DMX and Wu-Tang. Tool and RATM are just products of my time I guess.

Recently I've been listening to the Album Gift by Taproot. Love the range of this dude. High school friend showed me this group.

The song Mirrior's Reflection, a verse in there "Used me, but you don't want to know me" Hits so good!

Got my first portable CD player and bought some CDs at K-Mart.

Then Columbia House got 12 'free' CDs lol.

Edit: STP, The Cure, Queen, Bryan Adams, Sneaker Pimps, Led Zep...those are what I can remember.

I can safely say that King Diamond is my favourite band. A few years ago I downloaded Abigail and after giving it a listen thought it was okay, - a few catchy songs but nothing amazing. However a Youtuber I watch was waxing lyrical about 'concept albums' - which basically means when there is a theme or narrative that runs through an album - and the King's name came up.

Re-listening to Abigail with this knowledge made me realize the genius of the over-arching story. It's a fantastic piece of horror media:

Then of course you discover the rest of the King's discography like Them, Conspiracy, Voodoo and The Puppet Master. Not all of his releases are concept albums, or even as great as Abigail, but most are excellent. It's one of the few artists who I will sit down and listen to an album in full and never hit skip.

Helps of course that the King's vocal range is insane. I saw him live this year and considering he's nearing 70, he's amazing in person. The whole band is extremely talented. At 16:00 watch how when King throws the wine glass behind him the drummer hits it without skipping a beat:

Being Danish he's also extremely likeable:

In chronological order of bands I loved then and still do (many I've fallen off of):

The Beatles: First band that I got "into"; from being babysat at my aunt's place, and she was a big fan and would put The Beatles 1 album on repeat

Chevelle & Smashing Pumpkins: local radio station would play them, and this was when I first picked up a guitar. Many, many hours spent playing along with them

New Found Glory: Happy pop-punk with catchy melodies and harmony. They're good-natured, which is sometimes a rarity in that genre

Skrillex: I was in the right time and place for brostep. He went like a decade between putting out an album, and his newer stuff has IMMACULATE sound quality & design. Ear candy fr fr

Aphex Twin/Squarepusher: Let's say it took an "altered state of mind" to make sense of the noise to reveal the incredible depth, creativity, and detail in their stuff. But ever since they clicked, these guys have been my all-time favorites Case in point, I'd never heard something so funky, weird, noisy, singular, unexpected, awesome...as what starts at 2:55 in this song:

The latest band is Polyphia. My cousin and I both like making music, and he shared them with me. I have watched hours of musicians reacting to them to re-live what it was like to first listen to them. Every single one of these guys is a master of their instrument, and they are in lock step with each other, while also blending genres and making their RIDICULOUS technicality accessible with their beats, melodies/hooks, and deceptively simple progressions.

I remember watching this video 18 years ago first time hearing LP and DB combo.

System of a Down, was when I listened to there Hypnotize and Mesmerize album, especially BYOB.
Limp Bizkit, was when I listened to Boiler song and Results May Vary album, which I still like.
Deftones, after Koi No Yokan album. Used to listen in Metro and got addicted to their new songs also.

When I first listened to Rush I felt I finally understood that nobody on earth would ever really understand the profound depth of my genius to same degree as Geddy Lee and Neil Peart. I was destined to live the life of a truly great man all alone amongst a sea of unevolved pond slime but at least I had Rush. My genius would go unrecognized by the gatekeepers of society just like Rush never get the recognition they deserve.

This made me laugh. 5% sincerity, 95% facetiousness?

Nine Inch Nails - in 1997 I read gaming magazine Score which had its 50th issue do a "get to know" of its editors, and couple of them mentioned NIN as their favourite band, plus there was mention of them doing Quake soundtrack. Few years later I was browsing some guy's hard drive via Direct Connect ++ (precursor to torrents) and he had entire "Nine Inch Nails" discography so it caught my eye, I downloaded it and listened to the live album "And All That Could Have Been" from 2002, which starts with Terrible Lie and Sin, two songs I immediately loved. Listened to the rest of the discography, found out I loved about 95% of it, became fan, went to every NIN show in Czechland since (of which there have been four to my knowledge).

I listened to a lot of Marylin Manson when I was younger and I found out that "Down in the Park" was a remake of a song by Gary Numan. So I eventually found that song and became a huge Gary Numan Fan. Even got to see him live once. When I started I would only listen to "Tubeway Army", "Replicas", "The Pleasure Principle" and "Telekon" I couldn't stand anything he made after that, but after a couple years something clicked and I got really into everything from "Warriors" to "Machine + Soul" I can listen to "Dance" and "I, Assassin" but they're so slow and subdued compared to his other work that I don't find myself listening to them very often.

I don't really like anything after "Machine + Soul" He's sticking with a hard rock/industrial sound that I don't really find appealing. But he's still my favorite musical artist hands down any day of the week.

My neighbor came over one day and handed me four albums because I said I liked metal: Megadeth-Rust in Peace, Pantera-Cowboys From Hell, Black Sabbath-Master of Reality, and Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
All three of those bands have been fixtures with me since, particularly Megadeth.

Fugazi - think someone lent me their Steady Diet of Nothing LP.
Rage Against the Machine - saw them on the Late Show - No Nirvana episode.
