I always thought ross was genuinely upset and nearly on the verge of crying, but then quickly covered it up by shouting he is fine.

But it's come to my attention that other people interpret this as him just faking nearly crying and thus he is simply being sarcastic toward Rachel.

What say you?

Given the context of the scene and the argument plus how savage he was at the end, I’d say genuinely sarcastic in the moment but he probably cried later.

he regretted that he slept with someone else (whilst him and rachel were on their "break") and he wanted rachel back. thats partly why i interpreted him as beiung genuinely upset, since he probably doesnt want the relationship to end in this moment.

We know how he really feels in the end so I’m just thinking about the particular scene but both interpretations work I feel.

Exaggerated so fake. Pretending he was really hurt. But its the character in general. His principles and need to be right outweighs his emotion (jurassic park could happen etc)

In a sense, its both. He's trying to fake being upset and is sarcastic while actually being upset.

You could say deep down he's upset but how he delivers the line is clearly sarcasm.

So you guys think he faked the almost crying face ? Cause I guess that's what I'm specifically asking about

I thought he was genuinely about to cry in response to Rachel's "we are so over" comment, but then pulled himself together to save face and exclaimed "fine by me!"

Almost anytime I saw Ross on screen it seemed like he was on the verge of crying, so yeah, my vote is upset and near tears.

Edit: your capture makes him look like Dennis Reynolds about to rage.

i'm legitimately baffled why so many people here think this, it's obvious he's doing the fake crying as sarcasm. and on top of that it's a sitcom the writers wrote it this way for laughs. if the reverse were true it wouldn't be funny.

yes if you were go to into this 4D interpretation Ross loves Racheal so he's sad/angry they aren't getting back together.

timestamped of the video already shared.

both ways are funny tbh. like one is sarcasm and the other is him doing an awful job at trying to cover up being hurt

in the context of the series and how ross tried to win Rachel after he cheated, it makes more sense that ross would NOT be fine with ending the relationship. thats at least partly why i naturally assumed he was genuinely nearly crying

That particular action of over the top grief face indicates it is exaggerated and thus sarcastic.

However, we know that he actually is hurt. He's just using sarcasm as a defense mechanism.

Sarcasm for sure, never even crossed my mind he might be upset. He literally pre-emoted the fake cry by saying ‘it was 5am in the morning and you had RAMBLED ON for 13 pages… FRONT AND BACK’ - he had definitely had enough of her shit and DGAF.

Deep down he’s hurt but he’s using extreme sarcasim to make it seem like he doesn’t care/she can’t hurt him.

If that was was David Schwimmer trying to act genuinely sad for a moment, it was awful acting of an awful script that made an awful attempt to sandwich a genuine moment in between laughs.

It’s a comedy argument, and that doesn’t change for the half second referenced.

He's obviously being sarcastic. He's crazy angry at that point, not crying.

Here's the scene with audio, it's blatantly sarcasm. I don't know how you can interpret it any differently.

He was completely pretending to cry. He was super pissed at her. She wrote him a long letter (18 pages FRONT AND BACK) and wanted him to accept full responsibility for what he did. He saw nothing wrong with what he did (they were on a break), and after he thought they were back together, she started talking about how mature it was to accept full responsibility. He didn’t read the whole letter but pretended to, so in unknowingly had made her think he was sorry.

Pure anger in that scene, fake crying. Gotta take the entire sequence of events into context.

I think the thing the OP has wrong that people are confused about is the OP is suggesting Ross really was going to cry right then then sucked it up and went sarcastic. Thats not what was happening OP, Ross was Angry/upset in that moment and was being sarcastic about the crying. All of us human's do this at one time or another. The charecter is still upset and emotional, but in the entire scene he's blocking it out with sarcasim and anger directed at Rachel.

Even though the show is a comedy other emotional moments limp into the show. It’s clear Ross is funny first romantic second.

no i think he was going to cry and then tried to cover it up by saying he was fine. no sarcasm involved in this scenario

the other scenario is him crying sarcastically then getting serious by saying he's okay if they break up

the sarcasm/no sarcasm is all about the crying part

.I think you've completely read the actor and scene wrong in every regard. Its 100% anger based sarcasm from beginning to end.

Uhh.. he's just mad.. that was him mocking her, for the idea that he'd be upset at her statement.

Why would anyone think otherwise?

ross was torn up about cheating on rachel and he spent the last however many episodes trying to get her back .it just seemed natural that he would genuinely be hurt when rachel shouted at him in no uncertain terms that the relationship was over

plus schwimmer pulls a lot of exagerrated faces. it's not out of the ordinary for him to genuinely flip flap between emotional states like that

i don't think it could possibly be any clearer that he's being sarcastic to take the piss outta rachael
