This thread isn’t about how many hours you browse GAF, but how do you control such an addiction (message boards, IRC, pointless browsing, etc...) with obligations/more important stuff? The thing about games or movies is that I can set an hour or two for them, but I have IRC open 24/7 and new topics pop up on GAF every few minutes.

Personally I have a bigger problem than this, since even when my internet connection went down I still wasted A LOT of time, but I’m curious how you guys deal with it.

Go to a quiet place with no distractions and more importantly no internet access.

Has problems recognising girls
I work usually midday's or afternoon's through to around 9pm so whenever I get home, kiss and tickle the girl and the usual, check GAF and chat to a few of the friends on IRC, set a few downloads then go to bed. Sometimes when something big is on i.e. E3 then of course the entire structure is changed. But I seem to manage it fine.. the only problems I get is when I want to play something online whenever I feel like I need it and an hour passes and the girlfriend gets a bit impatient but eh, what can you do.

The only way i've managed to get some work done is to find some way that can entertain me long enough to keep me from wanting to go online.

Listening to music with headphones, helps a lot.

I'm not very good at balancing this stuff either. A billion thank yous for anyone with a good suggestion.

I dont. :( thats why i've been up till 3-4 am the last two nights writing university work.......the fact that i have to use my computer to write the stuff up means i'm constantly tempted. Good thing i rule at writing essays.

felt i needed to add this

ChipGuy writes "Broadband brings the world right to your laptop or your handheld. With it comes information, and along with it comes desire to stay connected, and on top of everything. Om Malik calls it Internet Anxiety Disorder. 'The rush to catch-up and living a six megabits per second lifestyle, is what I think is going to be first major malaise of the 21st century - Internet anxiety disorder,' he says. Firefox developer, Blake Ross thinks that 'Internet hardwires developing brains with a click-happy sense of urgency that will not defer to reality. We are addicted to information and seek it even when we know it's not available.' Others have described this info-addiction as Nerd Attention Deficiency Disorder."

i started a brutal home reno on an old house four months ago that all but forced me to keep offline and stop reading most blogs. the anxiety level has reduced considerably and i hardly want to bother reading email now at home. a strange but effective cure, unless of course you work from home as a journalist.
I agree with this guy, i think just disconnecting for atleast 2 hours is the only cure.
*hits disconnect*

i set a timer. i give myself thirty or however minutes to do the things i want to do, then i do the stuff i have to do. That's only when i have things that are absolutely necessary. It works pretty well though, and i don't feel like i've missed anything terribly important if i don't spend all night reading GAF or aimlessly browsing.

The Internet makes college so hard. I still have to read almost two entire books this weekend, and I'm sitting here on GAF. :(
