I'm thinking that I may have a DirectX problem (applications that use DirectX are locking up my entire computer after ~5minutes of use while OpenGL apps display no problems whatsoever)
I have downloaded the DirectX 9.0c Redistributable file...however, it won't even let me install it (EULA > Click Next to Begin > Instantly sends me to "Congradulations, DirectX Setup is complete")

if it means anything I have a Radeon 9800 Pro and the newest ATI drivers installed

Try uninstalling Direct X, before re-installing.

It's fussy about that.
