How do you think Nintendo will handle Mario 128?

Now that we know what the controller looks like and how it functions, how do you think Nintendo will utilize it for their next Mario game? Do you think they'll still keep it a 3D platformer? Perhaps they'll make you flick the controller to make him jump or something. I wouldn't put it past them, but I do hope they can make use of it in a better way.

Ideas? Discuss.

Personally, I think it'll retain the same gameplay mechanics of the last two Mario games, only adjusted to fit the needs of the new controller.

I'D LIKE to see something totally different and unique.

Or at least something that resembles the older Mario games(with flagpoll jumping to beat a level, floating boxes with countless random power-ups, psychedelic and unrealistic level-design, and different 'worlds'(Ice world, fire world etc).

Mario goes FPS maybe? :lol

Nah, I'm looking forward to New Super Mario Bros instead, don't wanna mess up my brain with all the possibilities for a Mario-game for Revolution :)

I'd definitely have to agree. I'm one of the people that loved the platforming of the void levels in SMS. Just imagine something like that, but fleshed out into different themes and enemies. It'd be sweetness. Hmm...something kinda like the Bowser levels in SM64, just with different themes.

Yep!

Though, creating and fleshing out over 100 unique 3D worlds would be WAY too time-consuming and expensive(hence the reason why the previous two Marios reuse the same levels 7 times).

Ah, the limitations of 3D.

If Mario 128 has a water pac/fludd/anything to do with the new Mario Sunshine characters (wierd green blobs in skirts, wierd professor, BOWSER JR.) I certainly won't 'handle' it.

Koopa Kids 4EVA.

I'd love to see a Mario that would let you play limited sessions of all Mario Sport iterations: Tennis, Soccer, Baseball, Kart, Snowboarding, etc. These would be integrated seemlessly in the game universe and act as previews of these games.

the mario series proper strikes me as the nintendo franchise most likely to be ruined by the revolution controller. pikmin and zelda should be fine, and metroid's already been ruined. but you know they're going to make the next mario a showcase for the waggle wand, and the "jerk your arms to make mario jump!" idea is stupid.

when did metroid get ruined?

Apart from the fact I don't agree with you on Metroid, Mario is already in 3D so making use of the 3D spacial qualities of the controller shouldn't required that big a jump when compared to making the switch from 2D to 3D.

I want 3D cape feather
You want a new version of the most unbalanced power-up in the history of Mario games? WTF. The feather practically broke the gameplay of SMW. No need for platforming, let's just fly through all the levels. Hehe.

Yea I remember getting pissed off at one of those all moving platforms levels... I knew what I had to do.

Indeed.

Who knows what Nintendo will come up with? I'm sure people were doubting them on making a 3D mario, and then they hit us with Mario 64, which is, arguably, one of the most important and best games of the last 10 years.

To be fair it'd just be a skin for the Winged Hat out of Mario 64!

I´m waiting for this game, but I don´t worry about if this game come soon or later. I prefer to wait until Miyamoto do a game than come a hit like SM64.

It´s very difficult, the times are another, but maybe...

Either I have just had a brain embolism, or that made no sense whatsoever.

mario needs to have more "special" moves. like say, stuff from super smash bros: melee and more.

must be able to ride yoshi.

all oldschool enemies return with amazing graphics and animation. bring back bowsers kids and progress the mario universe some.

new power ups for mario.

I wasn't endorsing it. Just suggesting that it might be something that Nintendo might do. Which would seem pretty damn difficult and frustrating in a 3D world.

Wtf? The cape was awesome! Away with ye!

Nice to hear your suggestions, but I was mainly asking for CONTROLLING abilities.

I would love to see a 3D world with 2D dungeons. This would make you use the controller "normally", then have to turn it sideways for the dungeons.

I think instead of controlling mario, you will have a hundred marios running amok... and you control them with a giant hand (pick one up, drop it behind a wall, drop powerups for them to grab). It will be like hearding cats, aka 100 Marios.

Well considering its meant to be the spirtual successor to Mario 64, i'm fairly confident that it will turn out greatly. By the way, anyone know if this is coming out for launch?

I'd love to see movement with the analog stick, camera movement/jump with the remote... I think it's pretty safe to say that Mario 128 will either make or break the Rev concept though...

oh i know. i wasn't blaming you for the idea. :lol

Oh, goody :).

I'm praying that Nintendo just makes Mario 128 a regular played platformer, but I really doubt they will since they would probably want to do what they did to the N64 with M64.

Wow, that's a really good idea.

Not quite the same. But still like herding cats.

I haven't figured out yet how they can make a fresh, fun, but still perfectly Super Mario-esque gaming experience with the wand-controller (I hope they can :)), but one thing they absolutely should do is occasionally have the player turn the controller 45 degrees for some NES-style old school platforming interludes. It's so obvious it can't be ignored!

I agree that it's unfortunately unlikely that the entire game will be played that way (thankfully we have New Super Mario Bros. DS on the way), but as a bonus, these tasters could save the game for me even if it's otherwise teh suckage (kinda like how the retro-style interludes in Sunshine saved the game for many people -- not for me though, I actually liked the Fluddpack.)

100 Marios has got to end up as something. They were refering to the next mario as "100 Marios" right before they changes it to "Mario 128".

Also, there's "Marionette"... but I think they waid it had no relation to Mario.

Are you sure about that? The only time I've ever seen "100 Marios" mentioned was on that faulty E3 list from a couple of years back.

Here's the Mario 128 timeline near as I can remember, with some random links to back me up.

N-Sider link.
At Spaceworld 2000 (where Nintendo showed off the infamous "mature Zelda" demo before eventually going with cel-shading) Nintendo showed off "Mario 128", a tech demo that supposedly featured 128 700-polygon Marios that were being generated independantly in realtime.

GameSpy link.
At some point afterward, it was "clarified" that it wasn't actually running 128 Marios in realtime, it was running 100, and that the demo's name was actually "100 Marios" but that it got misquoted and/or Shiggy just called it "Mario 128" because it sounded more like "Mario 64x2" that way. Also, Mario 128/100 sort of became Pikmin.
GameSpy: In past interviews, you have said that you are working on 100 Marios. Will that game be released on GameCube?

Miyamoto: (Laughs) I am still working on it. The 100 Marios that we showed at Spaceworld, that was really just a concept-level idea. It was an experiment that we did based on some ideas that I had, so it is hard to say just what form we will launch that in. Some of the ideas that we developed out of that were used in Pikmin.

IGN link.
Then after endless complaints from people like Matt from IGN about how Mario Sunshine didn't invent 3D gaming like Mario 64 did, and how Nintendo "owed" them a Mario 128 that was somehow more of a "true sequel" to Mario 64 than Sunshine was, and that the 100 Marios demo was it (as was the attitude with Wind Waker and the SW2000 Zelda demo), Nintendo said that Mario 128 was in development as an actual game for them.
In the interview, when asked about what's next from the company, producer Shigeru Miyamoto comments, "'Pikmin 2' and the 'Mario 128' game that was shown at the [GameCube] unveiling are both in development." Miyamoto elaborates a bit about the latter title, stating "I believe that with this game you'll be able to feel the "newness" that was missing from Mario Sunshine."

Another IGN link.
Then word came out that it's gonna be so "revolutionary" that it'll blow our minds.
The latest issue of Japan's Nintendo Dream magazine is apparently home to good news for Mario fanatics who were a bit disappointed with Mario Sunshine. According to the magazine, Nintendo's upcoming Mario 128 title is being built around a new idea that's never before been seen in a game. Apparently, Nintendo refrained from putting the title on display at E3 in order to prevent it from being stolen.

More IGN.
Then it went back to being an unconfirmable experiment, and (surprise surprise!) it's for the Revolution.
IGNcube: Can you give us an update on Mario 128?

Shigeru Miyamoto: [Chuckles] I'm just really sorry. I think I've given people the wrong impression with Mario 128. With all the questions I'm getting about this, I really feel like I've done people a disservice. In regards to Mario 128, we're currently doing a lot of Mario experiments back in Kyoto. We are definitely going to have a new Mario for Revolution. Whether or not that's 128 or not, I can't really say. It might be a new Sunshine. We're not sure. We're doing a lot of Mario tests right now for the Revolution.

Considering the Revolution is about re-simplifying gaming, I'd expect Nintendo's flagslip Rev title to pimp that philosophy.

A return to tried and true Mario Bros gameplay?
