How effective are modern projectors for games?

I was looking at some that were 1080 and they were pretty decently priced. Anyone use a projector? Is there input lag? I'm not to worried about it being dark enough as it would be in the basement. But I think it would be pretty cool to get one.

Any suggestions? Opinions?

Before divnig into lag and other details, have you ever seen (home) projector being able to rival TVs?

I think its a conspiracy to make projectors unappealing to regular customers for entertainment purposes because of the much larger screen sizes projectors can project.

It would prevent companies from being able to charge more for bigger screens when a projector can fill a wall. I have some large walls at home I would love to fill with a projector.

Faint memory's through my drunken haze of someone telling me the reason projectors are so cheap these days, is because the bulbs burn out quite quickly and they are expensive to replace.

This is a massively open ended question.....

I used to sell home theatre awhile stuff awhile ago, not 'home theatre in a box' type stuff, but the full custom installs.

If you go with a projector;

- make sure you have a room for it, it's going to be useless with any sort of light
- you need a screen. Cheap screens are well...shit...one of the best (and definitely most cost effective) methods is paint designed for projection. A variation of silver will give better contrast
- you will need speakers (if you don't have any already)
- make sure its an inorganic LCD panel, or you'll wear out filters after awhile, usually the blue filter
- have a look at some DLP and LCD projectors; some people see rainbows with DLP while LCD typically have poor contrast levels and you can get the screen door effect at longer distances. The only projectors I ever liked were LCoS systems and only Sony and JVC do them, but prepare to spend big to get an LCoS.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I'm going with projector paint, didn't know about silver so that's good to know. And yeah I have seen projectors that rival TV quality.

Home theater doods ftw!

I've wondered about this myself but never enough to research it. My main concern would be how is input lag?

I played Super Smash Brothers on some rich fuck's private theater from a projector once and it seemed fine, but I was pretty drunk.

Yeah, we had a nice projector at work and I brought my Wii in for the kids to play. It worked great even in the semi lit room. No lag either but that's a Wii so not too graphic intense. I immagine it would be great for parties/split screen.

I game on a projector using my PC on an ultrawide screen. Shooter can make me a bit motion sick on it, but RPGs are glorious,

I like my Epson 5040ube because it has good lens memory and isn't too expensive, but I am sure it has been updated and there is always something better.
