How is 2025 looking as we stand right now when it comes to RPGs? It's looking like it could be a down year for RPGs, no?

We have some remaster releases: Suikoden 1 and 2 Remaster, Ys: Oath in Felghana Remaster.

You have Avowed, Xenoblade Chronicles X for Switch, and Expedition 33. Anything major I'm missing? Unless you consider Ghost of Yotei, I consider that more action adventure.

Other than that, not a ton on the docket as we stand right now unless I'm missing some. Of course that could change if we get some new announcements down the road. How do you anticipate 2025 when it comes to RPG releases?

Trails in the Sky remake should be great as well, at least for people who never played the original.

edit: but I'm with you that it probably won't be a banner year in the same way 2024 probably was.

Odds are a lot of unannounced projects will fill it in.

Taro could drop something. New dragon quest. Ff9 or tactics remasters. Atlus projects.

There's also monster hunter?

Forgot about Lunar, very much looking forward to it, I still own my PS1 versions.

I'm hoping we get another surprise Nintendo release remaster of a classic game a la Live a Live. Like Terranigma for Switch/Switch 2, Bahamut Lagoon, Treasure of the Rudras.

I'm looking forward to the Suikoden collection and Lunar collection. S2 is an all-time and with Lunar, I don't believe they'll be using the Working Designs translations so it should be interesting if nothing else.

Two Trails games next year in Daybreak II and Sky Chapter 1 Remake already make 2025 a great year for RPGs IMO. Sprinkle in DQXII, Lunar Collection, Atelier Yumia, and other unannounced titles and I'm sure I'll have more than enough RPGs to play next year.

We also haven't seen much from Square Enix for 2025. I wouldn't be suprised to see something like FF Tactics Remastered. Or maybe the rumored FF9 project.

I consider Monster Hunter Wilds to be an rpg. Which means I have at least 1000 hrs of gameplay ahead of me. Which makes 2025 a seemingly great year? I'm pretty sure there's also a cool retro indy rpg coming this year that looked great (I don't usually like these). I also have about 19 years of rpg backlog staring at me every time I turn on the consoles lol.

Lots of WRPGs; Avowed, Kingdom Come, Outer Worlds, Exodus, Clair Obscura. Sea of Stars DLC looks good. Monster Hunter Wilds. The first Korean open world RPG maybe ever. Fable. Citizen Sleeper 2. Demonschool. Eternal Strands.

Looks good.

Only a crazy person could call a year when

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
Avowed
Outer Worlds 2
Gothic Remake
Vampire Bloodlines 2
Exodus
Clair Obscura
Fable

are scheduled, a "down year".

Usually we get one or two AAA WRPG a year at best.

Apparently no one's heard of this one. Hopefully turns out good. Seems to have more gameplay / physical magic than anything since Dragon's Dogma. Coming soon, Jan 28th. New IP.

Everyone has mentioned a lot but there's also DQ1+2.

I'd expect multiple SE announcements at the Switch 2 receal direct.

We need Persona 6, KH4 and TW4 ASAP.

I expect most of these to underwhelm or disappoint. VTMB especially.

People really don't like the artstyle. I personally don't hate it, and the physics based magic + Colossus enemies has me intrigued.

Remakes and remasters galore in 2025, but that's fine. Not every year can be a banger like 2024.

2024 is year of the JRPG in disguise. It might continue, or maybe not. MH it self is actually rpg, although in long scretch. And MH Wild is promising a lot alone. There are some true rpg such as Trails, DQ, XCX, Yumia, well might be not much as 2024, but still bangers for lotta people

This past year seemed unusually good. I'm hoping VTM Bloodlines 2 turns out well and really hope Lunar and Suikoden are good.

Monster Hunter, Atelier and two trails games in the west makes it a banger of an RPG year for me and I'm sure there's tons more.

Kingdom Come 2 is coming out ffs. It's gonna be a goty material unless they'll release it in even worse state in 1 (which is unlikely, because they're not desperate and running out of money this time).

Was there even a single good non japanese AAA RPG this year?
Aside from Vileguard, what else was there?
Even in AA/Indie sphere, there was pretty good Thaumaturge and that's about it.

When it comes to non japanese RPGs, 2025 should be in another league.

Looking forward to older games being re-released, such as Lunar.

Can't stand the infinite bloat that has plagued the genre.

I don't think there is any chance Exodus comes out in 2025. I think that's a fall '26 release at the earliest. I'm fine with that though. I'm super excited for that game as well.

As someone who doesn't really care for JRPG's anymore, I'll just say that I'm curious about Exodus and pumped about Kingdom Come 2. Won't support Obsidian and their hatred for their customers, so that leaves me with a two title year from what I can tell, which is honestly fine with me as I'm still playing through RPG's I started five plus years ago. I'd probably have enough to fill all my gaming time and then some with one good RPG released every two to four years for the rest of my life. I don't know how you guys have time to finish all these games and work plus spend time with the kids and wife. Hell, I don't even have friends that live near me, and it feels like I'm always busy. I swear some of you guys own pocket dimensions where time moves slower, and you're not inviting me over to use it.

It's fine, I still have a lot of 2024 RPGs in my backlog, lol. That said, I'm looking forward to Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition, Atelier Yumia and the Trails In The Sky Remake.
