NeoGAF - as things stand right now, are you planning to buy a PS6 Portable? Why/why not?

Do you plan on getting a PS6 Portable?

I loved the PS Vita but my interest in playing games on handhelds really ended with the Steam Deck OLED. I do own a Switch 2 but that is used only in docked mode as I have no need to play games in handheld mode even if the LCD screen was not hugely disappointing in comparison with the Switch OLED's.

Not interested at all in a PS6 or whatever portable as I know I would likely never use it. I am interested in an actual PS6 console though for gaming on a 4K OLED TV.

I wonder how many people who complained about the Series S holding back the X are excited for the PS6 portable.

I'm done buying consoles anyway, other than Nintendo, and to be honest I don't really wanna support them either but when I saw that Donkey Kong trailer I knew my slutty ass would eventually cave and get a Switch 2 at some point. Xbox and PlayStation are both trash these days, and my PC's will always outperform them, (eventually), and I'll get the games far cheaper there than on consoles, plus I get complete control, which I kinda dig.

That's a nope from me simply because I don't play video games on the go so the portability aspect is completely useless for my use case.

I honestly don't see the point of a separate handheld that plays the exact same games as the home console.
The comparison to the Switch 2 will be inevitable and not favourable.

I don't see the point. If the Vita hadn't been discontinued and there were still be new games for it and their successors, it would be interesting. But I have absolutely no interest in it like this.

When it comes to portables I'll probably stick to Switch and ROG Ally devices in the future. Playstation I'd rather have a dedicated console. I have quite a large collection of physical PS4 and PS5 games it will be impossible to play with a portable. Probably will be impossible with a PS6 console too because I don't think Sony will include a disc player in their next generation console.

Yeah I really like the ergonomics of it and the games line-up for launch seems really solid as well what the fuck is wrong with you?

I don't like the coercive nature of the poll options. Just give me a NO. Or if OP insists on nuance, give me "No, I won't be buying any more Sony Playstation shite, ever".

Portable gaming > console gaming, there, I said it. Fight me.

To answer OPs question, it hasn't been announced, we don't know what it is, how it looks, how functions, or its compatibility with legacy purchases. Chances are I will have zero interest, knowing Sony, but there is also a possibility I could be there day one.

I think Sony should stick to making "the most powerful console", while also offering and refining the Portal.
Otherwise, what is the differentiator of a dedicated Sony handheld? I can play third-party stuff on a SteamDeck and "SteamDeck-likes" already (and even PlayStation games), and Nintendo have arguably the strongest first-party, making the Switch interesting. What's Sony's angle? "PlayStation exclusives on the go"? Is that good enough?
I thought that one of their main selling points is being the "premium gaming experience". How does a weaker SKU in handheld form or a dedicated handheld help?

I am not against portables, I like them. I just don't see how this meshes with Sony's current positioning of PlayStation. I think the Portal is actually the best solution they can offer.

I've predicted a number of things that have actually happened, but I never predicted PlayStation software would be available on PC*. I suppose that's the reality of any business; if there's money to be made somewhere then somewhere is where the business will go.
Yeah, it's money I guess. But their whole strategy on PC is strange as far as I'm concerned. They said that they were doing PC ports because they thought it would drive people over to Playstation consoles. I really don't see it working, for me it's doing the opposite.

At minimum I thought they would spread out through a PlayStation PC launcher. Keep some ecosystem walls up, but outside of the console.

Not much interest in a portable, but I certainly wouldn't get one that can only play playstation games. I'd only pick up a steam deck or whatever xbox cook up so that all pc games are accessible.

It's a sound strategy to divide up teams and resources to produce games for two systems, just ask Nintendo.

I'm much more interested in a PS6 Portable than a PS6.

But Sony has to fix their software output.

Less politics. Less cookie cutter design. Less playing it safe.

No, handhelds just don't work for me. The best time I have to play games is when I'm at home. When I leave my house I'm driving and I don't have time to play games almost anywhere I'm going. I could play at work like once a week which is the day I don't go to the gym during lunch. Honestly though I get so much playtime at home I don't really feel the need to get in more playtime at work. Even if I did I could just use the portal or remote app on PC very easily.

I don't go on vacation every year which would be another opportunity to use it. Even then I'm not buying a device that comes in handy once a year even if I did start going every year.

That's not what they are doing. This is going to work similar to the way the steamdeck does now.

Big fat no.

I want a steam deck 2. Not another closed platform that will die in a year.

The Switch/Switch 2 (which is docked 99% of the time) and Steam Deck (which I never use) has taught me that I'm not really a portable/handheld gamer so I'm not sure why I'd buy a PS6 Portable over a regular PS6.

This is especially true if battery technology doesn't vastly improve by the time Sony releases its portable.

The portal is a great idea and a great product.

This is a mistake.

Side projects at Sony haven't been on a winning streak lately. PSVR2 anyone?

This handheld is just a dumbass idea. I mean honestly, they are gonna have to create another sku of every game for this fucking thing. Does that sound like a good idea to you?

I guess MS does have something to copy. The Xbox Series S.

For me it depends not only on what Sony is offering, but also what Valve is offering with the Steam Deck 2. I'm lttp but I love my Steam Deck OLED, and Steam OS in general.

No chance and if it results in a split SKU situation for the next generation then I'll even reconsider whether or not I'll even purchase the ps6 as well.

Leaning towards yes because I'm lazy and have a bunch of digital PS4 games that should definitely play fine. Biggest threat is the new Steam Deck because if that can play PS5 equivalent games like Ghostwire Tokyo and Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p high 60fps then I'm less likely to invest in another dedicated closed platform handheld.

I haven't turned on my switch in almost 3 years. I haven't turned on my steam deck in almost 2 years. I just don't care about handheld gaming like I used to. I go in expecting I'll find all this use for it, but I spend the money and the hardware goes completely unused after the first month or two.

As a teacher, I can't really use the things when I'm at work. There's no time. My free time happens when I'm at home with uninterrupted access to my gaming pc and dedicated consoles.

It's just not for me. Very expensive paperweight, basically.

If it's as downscaled as rumors suggest, then not. A real PS5, though, definitely! But I'd prefer Sony to release a PS4mobile first^^

Zero interest in a playstation that is not the mainline console. Sony didnt support the Vita, and the PSVR2 just exists. Portal was a pretty dumb device too, it was essentially a budget tablet connected to a DS controller and only had one function. Haven't touched my PS5 at all this year because there are just no games.

Could you clarify whether or not this rumoured device will play all PS6 games?

Surely if it only plays games up to PS5 then it should be classed as part of the PS5 family.
That will not make much sense as it's not using Zen2/RDNA2, it literally cannot be part of the PS5 family.

Portables are so huge, expensive, and power hungry now that I'd rather just bring along a tablet and controller.

I'll bring a long a very small portable once in awhile. Like a ngp or the like.

Probably not.

I like the idea of portable gaming more than I actually like portable gaming.
Like it always sounds cool and I still find it impressive we now have portable devices playing proper AAA games. But at the same time I almost never play games when outside of my house so 99% of the use case ends up being playing in bed or just lying on the couch playing a shittier version of a game on a smaller screen instead of my nice TV.

My thoughts exactly. After Sonys failure to consistently deliver great content this gen, I'll likely be waiting a few years into the gen before picking one up. If devs have to deliver feature parity on the handheld and that keeps ps6 games from truly pushing the limits, I won't get one at all.

So it'll play PS6 games?
Developers will need to target specific PS6 APIs, so yes, it will.
>b-but the low power mode for PS5 games exists for a reason!
There's no way that Sony will not want to have PSSR available on PS6P games, which is PS5 Pro only for now.
that's like saying the PS4 Pro cannot be part of the PS4 family because it uses GCN4+ and not GCN2
And yet it's still all Jaguar, just like PS5 Pro was still all Zen2. The fact that the main source of information quite confirmed that it's NOT the same CPU architecture, but also that it's supposed to be the same as PS6, in response to someone asking why people were calling it a PS6 Portable, should tell you all.
Wtf ?
Is it a serious poll ?
Used the same poll as the other thread, I guess it's a serious topic for some people.

Impossible to really say until I know more.

I'd buy a handheld that let's me play all my games on my PS library, but I'm not convinced this will be a console that plays PS6 games.

Yes, I know this is addressed in the title. However, I'm expecting the PS6 to be a lot more powerful than the PS5. Does this mean PS6 games need to be gimped to run on a handheld? That doesn't seem like a good move.

Yeah ok I'll buy

My only concern is Sony juggling 2 separate libraries like they were with PS4 and Vita.

Look at how they "supported" PSVR 2

the architecture is entirely irrelevant. the relevant part will be which games it can or can not play.

it's feasible to make it a PS5, but not feasible to make it a PS6.
forced parity with the PS6 would mean that every PS6 game would need to support a version for a system half as powerful as the PS5, and one that's 5x as powerful as the PS5.

that's not a reasonable thing to require from developers.

meanwhile they can use the improved power efficiency and IPC gains of the new architecture to have a handheld that can be positioned as a portable PS5, with new PS5 games being required to also run on the handheld, and encouraging devs to patch older titles to make them compatible.

Yes I will buy it IF this play my ps4 to ps5 PSN library offline (no streaming like PS portal) with good frame rates. I will find made in Japan version just like my ps5 consoles (and pro)
