NeoGAF - as things stand right now, are you planning to buy a PS6? Why/why not?

Do you plan on getting a PS6?

if theres something decent to play that I can't play anywhere else then sure.

But the answer is probably no.

I've been playing most of my games on PC this generation - so much so that the last time I turned on my PS5 was for Rebirth and even longer so for Xbox. PC + whatever Nintendo does for next gen for me.

I've owned every PlaySttation home console and I've never been let down yet. So of course I'll buy one.

I know that if I buy a PlayStation at launch I'll be getting new games for it 10 years later.

No other company in history has been able to guarantee that every generation.

There has been a lot of discussion on the PS5 generation on NeoGAF, and apparently a lot of GAF is seriously convinced that this is the worst generation of PlayStation ever.

I personally do not think so, and coming to PlayStation for the console experience as I do, I think the current experience is actually very good, and shall continue to ensure Sony sells ~100 million machines every generation as long as they keep that maintained and going.

But for you enthusiasts on this community, I have a question. As things stand right now, would you get a PS6?
Consoles are getting more and more redundant each new gen. Building a PC or upgrading your PC seems like a much smarter play. Play all Xbox games, all pC games, all switch 1 games (emulation) and most Playstation 1st party games. It's the one platform to rule them all.

This generation has proved diminishing returns. I have a Pro and for the first time I'm thinking, it's going to be a good couple years into PS6 lifecycle before Pro and PS6 performance starts drifting further apart. The only issue I have is that even after 1 or 2 years, PS consoles never really see much of a price drop so if I'm going to buy it eventually anyway, what's the point of waiting if its going to be virtually the same money I'll spend later anyway? I'm a Sony fan boy so I will always buy it, just maybe not a launch for the first time since OG PS1.

I'm really curious what the PS6 launch price will end up being. I'd almost say to wait for the PS6 Pro, but if it follows a similar pricing trend of the PS5 - PS5Pro, that's a big no from me.
My bet is Itll be $600 minimum for the home console and $450 minimum for the handheld. 650 for home and 500 for handheld highly likely but I think 700 is less likely unless they position the PS6 as a PS5 Pro Pro i.e the most powerful machine you can buy while still largely supporting the PS5 maybe even a little more than they did the PS4 with Miles Morales, gow Ragnarok and horizon forbidden West.

Gonna depend on if there is a physical game option. Once any hardware comes out that only allows digital purchases, that's when I stop buying new platforms, and focus on older platforms.

Given the rising costs of things, I'm not really sure. The real problem for me on Sony isn't that they're porting exclusives to other platforms...it's that they're producing less exclusives I personally care about when I look at my purchase history this gen. Live-service games don't interest me, and every platform is using some Nvidia or AMD barely customized hardware.

Nintendo at least produces better games still, and their device is portable, but even then I'm waiting on a Switch 2 until there is more that I want.

Most of the games I'm playing are indies to AA titles, with some bigger eastern games, and western AAA has become the exception for me now. Most of what I want to play is anywhere because it's from a devs that wants to release everywhere. Sony's clearly still selling plenty of boxes, so they have more than enough to keep doing fine.

No. Sony's output on PS5 convinced me that I don't need their consoles anymore as anything which I'm mildly interested in I'll play on PC at some later date and they seem to be uninterested in making games which I'd want to play on day one.

I'll probably get one, but I'm not going to rush around like a dick as I did for PS5. It's probably going to be incrementally better than the pro I have, so unless there is no cross-gen (very unlikely) or it is ridiculously better (also unlikely) I'll be waiting for the craziness to calm down.

PS6? Future of gaming?

Not right now. I can play their games on a couch PC. Might possibly go for a Pro if they increase the PC port delays.

And as said in the portable thread I'll likely go with that one. I doubt PC ports of PlayStation games will run well on a PC handheld, right now they only run well through brute forcing on highend hardware.

Why doesn't a single choice say it depends on what games are available for it? A PS6 (or any console) is a useless piece of plastic without software to play on it, so if the software isn't there, there is no reason to buy one. If the games ARE there, I'd get one immediately, or when those games become available. But this is how it works for all consoles.

I voted no but I may get one late in the generation or ps6 pro. Depends. If it's more of the same like ps5 i'll pass.

I voted "eventually," but I'm still waiting for things that tap the potential of the CincoPro.

I mean, that would be nice.

I would want one as soon as possible just for the simple fact that it will be the best place to play the later half of the 9th gen games, just like what happened with the first years of the PS5. It would also be nice to play Bloodborne Remake on launch day (hopium).

it still won't be as good as my PC and have 98% of the same games as on steam.

ill wait a week at least to get one. :messenger_smiling:

If Sony release the PS6 between november 2028~november 2029, I'll probably get one day one. If they release in 2027, I will just wait, since PS5 will probably receive the majority of games until 2028 at least.

Because the question is for as things stand right now

I've voted I have no plan. When I mean no plan, I really mean no plan and not that I don't want to buy it.
This generation is a little disappointment so I'm waiting to see what they proposed.
The chance for me to buy it at launch however is really low.

Playstation consoles are where my PC games get beta tested no need to buy one I'll just wait for the finished product.

Yes, because I skipped PS5 this generation and I surely want to play whatever the next Gran Turismo is at the best quality. Also GTA6 with whatever enhancements they add.

Sadly, i suspect the world will be a very different place when ps6 launches. This will not be 2008 repeat where consoles did very well in spite of economic downturn. This time, I think gaming industry will undergo massive changes.

Thus, I think for the first time multi console owners will likely only have one system (at most). I think the barrier to entry for PC gaming will need to come down as well.

Always went with PlayStation dating back to the PS2, ps3 you know what a wild trip, PS4 took off, started the pandemic with a PS5 and than traded that in for a series X.

Most likely as long as the money isn't a stretch. It's not right now, but you never know. Cross gen is likely to be very long, but some key games could make me jump. Guessing late ps5 games might run a little shabby and 30fps in the worst cases, I think my pc has me covered in hardware requirements for a minute so I don't have to worry about that part. Getting ps consoles is like a tradition that has crossed into ritual at this point, so they don't have to do a lot to get me to jump.

Cross gen games has made buying new consoles unappealing for me. PC releases don't bother me, but cross gen needs to die.

Eventually? Sure, probably. I need a main gaming station and it will be a cold dark day in hell before i utilize a workstation as one.

No chance. Still we didn't get a proper gen with the PS5 and it's been collecting dust until recently. Later on, yeah sure.

This will be my last Sony console. With their games releasing on PC less than a year after release on console. What is the point? The only way i would is if somehow they reverse on the PC releases but that isn't happening. They are getting very good money from that platform.

Honestly for me I plan on Playstation being my primary platform going well into the future. I have never liked Sony's first party games. I just don't like gaming on PC. Sony makes the best consoles. It's just that simple.

I do own all the consoles and a gaming PC currently with a 3080. I just don't care for it anymore. I retired from PC to console gaming. I've been building gaming PCs since many here were born. I still build gaming PCs for my friends, family, coworkers. I still build work PCs for my business. I still build gaming PCs for myself. I know enough not to put my CPU cooler on upside down like.....someone I know. I've always told people PCs are easy to assemble. They are legos for nerds. You just need someone with some minimal research/knowledge to look over your build and you are golden.

I've been asked a lot and I do have an answer as to why I don't like to game on PC, and it's a very important reason to me.

I'm a tinkerer. I'm a fixer. I fix shit. That's my job. I've been a fixer my entire life. On some games, I tend to overmod. The modding becomes my game. I enjoyed this for a decade. It was fun. However, the novelty of modding wore off and I realized that I spent most of my time modding or chasing down issues. I cannot rest until my PC is in a 100% perfect state for me, so any issues I have to troubleshoot. I have to perfect my mods. Something PC gamers might not tell you is mods cause crashes. Now I ask myself, did my mods cause the crash or something else? Same thing with overclocking. I'm a HUGE overclocker. I've delidded. I've used my own liquid metal tim. What overclockers might not tell you is overclocking is about getting something to run without crashing so crashes happen. Chips degrade. I spend a lot of time on these things when I game on PC. I can't help it. I'm a tinkerer. I decided I would rather spend my time gaming. Sometimes what you can't do is more important than what you can. Consoles provide focus. Believe it or not I still spend a lot of time working on my consoles, lol, just not nearly as much. The convenience also doesn't hurt.

I don't think the PS5 has delivered enough that I'm ready to move on from it. This generation can go on for 5 more years as far as I'm concerned.

Every dollar spent on it are games I could have bought instead in steam, and to top it off my PC has actual value as a productivity / multimedia machine if & when I need it. When consoles reach that level of price, they stop being something you can casually afford and you are forced to take more measured decisions on where to put your money for entertainment. As things stand, I am not coming back to traditional desktop consoles, got more than enough games to play on PC TBH. I would not be surprised at all if this math as what a lot of people are doing going forward.

I voted that I don't plan to, but only because I'm not into portable gaming at all. As for the non portable PS6, I am most likely going to buy that one.

Day One if I can.

I get thousands of hours out of consoles. It's an easy choice.

It's still two years away. Meanwhile, Rockstar grabbing everyone by the balls with a console exclusive GTA6 next spring to force PS5 sales.

If I get a PS5 Pro to play GTA 6, will I even want to upgrade to a PS6 only a couple of years later? Probably not, that's too much money too soon.
For most that'll probably depend on if it's 30 FPS on the pro or not.

I'll get a PS6 day 1 because it'll run all my games better and it's not dropping in price for years regardless. Plus if you sell or trade in your old consoles you'll get better deal day 1.

I do not think this is the worst gen for ps, but I've been debating on building a second computer strictly for TV use.

This seems insane because of build prices, but I hate being nickled and dimed by ps+, and YouTube is infuriating to use on ps because of the ads.

I also thought about not purchasing a ps5.

Of course. I've owned PlayStation consoles every generation, including pro models and handhelds. My setup would be incomplete without one.
