How is the ACT Graded?

I'm pretty sure it's based on percentages (answer a certain % correct, get this score), but the scores could be normalized to give that nice bell shape. The test is cake though, so I don't think it's curved too much, if at all.

The ACT is graded in four sections: Verbal, Reading, Math, and Science analysis (basically charts, graphs, etc.) Each of these sections is graded up to 36, and the four scores are tallied together.

I got a 29 nearly every time I took it, then I finally got a 30 equivalent on the SAT--1340. I believe a 30 ACT is equal to about a 1320-1350 SAT.

As for your question about how to get a 36--NOBODY GETS A 36.

Ok, I'm sure some people have, but don't count on it. Anything above a 27 is considered "good", anything above a 30 is excellent.

These two guys who lived in my school district got perfects on the ACT and the SAT (36 and 1600). They were in the newspaper and everything.

BTW, I got a 24.

Why do people take the ACT? I remember one of my friends at Oberlin told me he got a 30 something on the ACTs and he was pissed that Oberlin didn't accept the ACT. Is there some reason to take the ACT over the SAT?

Only if the school you are applying to requires it.

BTW I never took the ACT. I am sure I would get a 20 though :(, I sucked on the SATs.

isn't the SAT fading away or something?

Back when I took them it was a location thing. Like midwest schools wanted SAT while east coast schools wanted ACT or something silly like that.

That was too long ago for me to remember my scores, prolly around a 32-33 on the ACT and equivalent SAT. A friend of mine got perfects in both if I recall. I don't remember anyone making a big deal out of it though. I think on average one person in each graduating class had perfects at my school.

Granted it has been 10 years since I applied to college, but all the east coast schools back then wanted the SAT. Or at least the ones I looked at and applied to.

When I took it 2 years ago it was out of 36. I got a 33 and it said I was in the 99 percentile...which means it's pretty fucking rare to get a perfect IMO.

And Yoshifumi is right, usually ACT is sometimes accepted as an alternative, but SAT is still the nationwide standard. Lots of the better schools make you take SAT 2's now. So many tests.
