I've deleted my logs over the years so this isn't indicative of how large my logs would be right from the start, all those years ago when I first logged myself into an IRC server. I believe it was TheOneRing.net IRC server, over 5-7 years ago.

So how large are your logs and while we're at it what was your first server?

593mb :( . I've been on irc since 1995. The first irc network I started hanging out was on undernet, where all french cannucks used to hang out back in the days. Now my client is connected to efnet 24/7 and I always hang out on gaf's channel. I really like irc because its a great way to meet new people and talk about random stuff, at any time of the day

0 mb.

I don't use IRC much, but for some reason I can never get the logging to work at all. Neither Xircon nor Chatzilla will actually save my logs despite all the options being enabled. So much ownage of Leaf/Nuck fanboys on #ga lost, so many gross/sexy/objectionable/funny links gone forever.

Why keep IRC logs? If you ever get caught doing something illegal, it will be used against you. Even if you're not doing something bad, it takes up space. What's the point?

Ah, the voice of reason. Hi.

I wonder this myself.

IRC logs found on someone's computer can be used in court? They can be tempered with very easily. This is crazy :lol, especially in nowadays internet climate of worms and auto-scanning tools; anyone could easily plant faked logs, upload random warez files and get that poor guy in jail!

Ding. Also, keep in mind that ANYONE can keep a log of what you're saying in a chatroom as well. And if you're worried about getting caught doing something illegal, how about you just don't do anything illegal, ya pussy.

and the size logs take up in space is minimal. I've got about ~3 years of #GA logs, and it only takes up 250mb of space. That's probably less than a single porn movie you have on your hard disk.

And well, the point of logs is the same as the point of say...keeping a journal, buying a yearbook, etc. etc.

Exactly, but Togo was saying that because he works for the ESA or something

Exactly. Somewhere in my log, I have classic #ga moments such as The Night of the Xaviers and #GAF's 'Snake on a Plane' brainstorming session

i keep logs because sometimes very useful information is dropped into the chat and I can simply retieve that info by searching for a keyword using Windows' Search -> "A word or phrase in the file:"

I've done it a few times.

And sure they take up space.... but they're just text files. You'd have to be on the net for half your lifetime for it to take up any significant space.

500+ mb. While it covers around 3 years, I leave my computer online nearly 24/7.

Which reminds me, I should run an analysis on it again sometime.

I set it to log out of habit, but I never go back to check it. It's too bad I had to format my HD awhile ago, I had that time logged when Tre said getting head from another guy isn't gay. :lol

I can't find my mIRC log but Windows is telling me it's over a gig >_<

Since going to #ga using Trillian the log is over 30MBs

The logs would be used in court to show willful knowledge of conducting illegal actions. It's done all the time to noobs who don't realize that their computer is seized and gone over with a fine tooth comb. Deleted files? No problem, law enforcement and hired techies in the private sector have intense "undelete" programs that can figure out old data...even if it's been reformatted. Don't ask me how or why, but they do. Am assuming that this tech is used moreso in terrorism or amber alert stuff?

The process used in recovering repeatedly overwritten data is highly expensive and won't be used for small fry. :P
