Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
And bonus question, do you anticipate owning multiple consoles or stick to one.

judging by how pro consoles are coming out in 2023 it's gonna last 7 years. 10 years is too long and even the pro consoles would have been outdated by then, and releasing a pro version of a console in a 5 year span seems dumb to me

the gen hasn't really started yet seeing as how there haven't been very many next gen games, the 2 GOTY contenders for this year are 2 PS4 crossgen games ffs. It's gonna be a while

I'm expecting PS5 and XSX/S to be supported for a long long time : PS6 and The Next XBox would be released in Nov 2028, and cross-gen games for other 3-4 years, so until 2031-2032. I'm also expecting the Mid Gen refresh for PS5 and XSX by Sept-Nov 2024/2025. My two cents.

Edited : ""And bonus question, do you anticipate owning multiple consoles or stick to one."" ---> I'm planning to buy a PS5 as well, and both Mid Gen upgrades(PS5 PRO and New XBox), if they will be released.

I choose 10 years. The PS3 lived that long( you could still buy PS3 games recently on the Playstation store) and the PS4 is still lead platform for some AAA games right now. If next gen will have 2 to 3 years of cross gen like right now it will be easily done.

For me the question will be how good are the pro consoles and what will be their purpose? 8k is too far away and 60 fps a nice have but not a requirement imho. PSVR 2 will naturally find it useful but unless Sony mandates all new ps5 games to have a VR mode it will be a huge amount of money wasted for only few games.
If the gen is long I can imagine myself either buying a pro bundle that promise the "best version" of a game that I am in love with(like the next GOW, TLOU3...) or buy a microsoft console that will either be a really cheap series x equivalent or a monster like the one x was.

7 should be it.

Unless you mean with games still releasing then yeah 10 years is probable. PS4/XBO is at year 9 already and those had low tech relatively speaking at its time.

10 years.

What would even be the selling point of a next gen console after 5-7 years that a mid gen upgrade couldn't handle?

Bonus question: I plan to own a PS5 later down the road. Not in a rush at the moment.

short gen, I think they realize that they put too powerful hardware into the market that can't support it. If they had made a Pro Pro version of last gen consoles and called them next gen they would be better off.

depends if this will actually remain a console generation or if we entered the post-generational phase of game consoles.

Microsoft is almost there already after all. and their naming scheme is also pointing towards the fact that there won't be any clear cut generational divides anymore.

I bet going forward Xbox games will adopt a compatibility graph on the box with minimum system requirements.
"Needs Xbox Series X|S 2 or newer" something like that.

the numbered systems will always be cross compatible, so an X2 game also always runs on an S2. with CPUs that are similar or the same and using the same CPU and GPU architectures etc.

7 years i guess, devs follow the hardware, which PS5 and Xbox Series combined are the majority.

I said 5.

This generation sucks. Having to settle for 30 FPS to play in 4K sucks. Ray tracing performance on consoles is so bad it might as well not exist.

They better put out "Pro" consoles if they want to extend this generation beyond 5 years. They feel outdated already.

Remember when Sony made fun of Xbox 360 for being "Xbox 1.5"? Well this generation is PlayStation 4.5. Cross-gen games running at 30 FPS.

8-10 years seems reasonable so we've still got another 6-8 years i think.

i feel like this generation hasn't even started yet. two of the biggest games on PS5 (hfw/gowr) are basically PS4 games lol. 3 if you want to count GT7. we're already 2 years into this generation and fuck all has happened really. you still "can't walk into a store" and get a PS5.

i've always bought playstation consoles at launch but it seems like i made the right decision to hold off for a slim model even if it's still a year away. played HFW on PS4 and sold my console. not interested in GT7 or GoWR in the slightest and there are no upcoming games i'm planning on buying. Well there is FFVII Rebirth but that likely won't be out until after any PS5 Slim comes out.

i'll grab a PS5 and Series X in a years time or maybe wait for early 2024 lol.

It will be the full 10 years. Enough people are shelling out for higher priced consoles, so that increases the incentive to continue developing games for these systems. At the same time, there's no appetite to spend double the money for the next generation.

Are pro consoles even confirmed? Or just baseless Twitter speculation? Because the PS4 PRO was clearly coming but I'm not seeing anything that even hints that upgraded consoles are coming.

I think OP meant when are the nextgen consoles coming out which means the end of the current console gen. I pick 2027.

WE HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN A SINGLE GAME RELEASED THAT WAS BUILT ON UNREAL ENGINE 5 YET!!!!! This console generation hasn't even started it yet!!!! We have yet to even see a game that truly pushes the PS5 and Xbox Series X to the limits, a game that makes us all go "Holy shit look at those graphics!!!!"

7 years as per usual. Maybe shorter, sony and MS might just say fuck it and make a new console generation in like 2025 since this one feels like a second mid gen refresh of 8th gen.

I expect this generation to last through 2030. There are benefits to long console generations these days. Diminishing returns are really noticeable these days. Most indie devs won't be able to max out what a ps4 or an xbox one console offers. Let alone a ps5 or a series X. There are games releasing these days that could have released on a ps3 or less.

We're still getting cross gen games and 2023 is almost here. I've still never seen a ps5 in a physical store for sale. I expect this gen to be as long as the ps3/x360 generation.

I expect new consoles in 5 years or so (meaning the generation will have lasted 7 years), but then we'll have a cross-gen period of 2-3 years again.

I buy every console that drops because I am in a financial situation to buy them and won't gate myself out of any experience. I say 5 years. New consoles is big money and the shorter the generation the happier the investors. Unless the mid gen refresh rumors are true then 7.

Going by the lack of next-gen games exploiting the new gen defining hardware features so far, the length of game development being +5years and the slowdown on lithography changes to make these consoles as low power slim versions I would say 10years.

Bonus question: With PC always as my gaming backup and AMD and Intel bringing competition to the GPU space, I'm never going to be in the market for a Series console - in their current offering - compared to spending that money on PC upgrades.

I probably won't buy a mid-gen refreshes I hate that separation - I didn't buy a Pro or X last-gen - and would prefer a shorter gen if that's an option instead of the refresh.

I would probably buy a new PS5 slim if smaller, used less power and had a silent UHD-Drive, but could easily see out a 10year gen with my launch model, like I did with my PS4.

/edit
I assume Nintendo doesn't count - not being in direct competition - and I always buy their new ideas.

I wonder if they'll still be making PS4 games in 5-7 years. I bet they will. These consoles are going to get harder to drop after a while.

Because of the pandemic, my guess is probably 10 years or so. Support on current gen Consoles to last probably around the same as how PS4 is now.

And bonus question, do you anticipate owning multiple consoles or stick to one.
Already own all next gen consoles and I think this gen will last 10 years because 2020-2022 were wasted years due to the delays caused by the pandemic.

2023 is when we will start to see more next gen games released.

The ideal is to run at the current tv standard of 4k/120Hz so it will be a while for pro versions to achieve this. Thinking there will be multiple pro releases.

I don't anticipate owning multiple consoles this gen. PS5 is probably my last Sony console and really hope to finish my PS+ backlog before the generation ends.

I thought 7. But covid, chip shortage, the war, inflation. + Next year the PS4/XB1 are 10 years old and we're still getting pretty solid crossgen titles.

So 10 year.

To play games at 60fps

I'm not expecting a whole new gen till 2028 at the earliest, due to this gen kind of having a stalling start with so many cross gen games, longer dev times, and major ongoing supply issues.

Forever. There has been no real start to this gen and there will be no real end.
Graphics have barely advanced since the ps4 and companies seem unable to move on — or carry the burden of the increased development cost that goes hand in hand with more advanced graphics. You can see this mitigated by the large amount of remakes being sold at the moment.
Companies are hog tied by what customers want (wow factor) and delivering those worlds with more and more detail.
Next gen will be a tough sell as there will be little advance in graphics to help sell the machine.

We are two years in and there aren't any system sellers yet on any of them.

And bonus question, do you anticipate owning multiple consoles or stick to one.
I have an Xbox Series X and a Switch. I use the Xbox about 90% of the time. I have no plans to get a PS5, I bought a PS4 last gen and didn't really like the games or the console. I might consider an Xbox pro upgrade later in the gen.

For Xbox and Playstation - 7 years.
Next gen starts late 2027.
Biggest launch titles:
The Elder Scrolls VI (Xbox, PC)
Uncharted 5 (PS)

For Nintendo - 7 years.
Next gen starts early 2024.
Biggest lanch title:
Metroid Prime 4

For the bonus question:
I always end up owning everything no matter what silly ideas I might have pre-launch. I expect no changes this time.

This gen hasn't begun yet. The consoles have potential if you're not obsessed with 4K et raytracing. The difference in specifications with the old hardware is there and is only starting to be employed.

I hope it will last more than 7 years, why not 10 years. I don't see the point in being the lenght of a normal gen with the delay accumulated since pandemic. Devs are taking 6 years to make a new AAA and people want to move on fast with the hardware, it's counterproductive. I don't have this consumer drive to get more and more hardware especially with the graphical gap being less and less visible.
