How loud is your 360?

Although I haven't gotten one yet - but I'll probably try to get one in mid January - and enjoying the anticipation with my current games when things are a bit less hectic.

However, one thing worries me is about the noise-level and power comsumption level. What I read from a Japanese report, 360 is louder than a PC, and takes 5 times more electricity when playing RR6, than PS2 playing GT3.

Power consumption, doesn't really worry too much (although I do not wish to get my fuses get zapped for X360 power on/off) - but noise level, I'm a bit sensitive.

So how loud is your 360 in comparison to other consoles?
As for current console quietness - I found GC>PS2>Xbox (because HDD clicking noise)>DC. How does X360 fit in this list? (I just hope it's somehwere between GC and PS2 - or even PS2 and Xbox. I just would like to know your experience.

thanks for advance,
lachesis

It's the loudest console I've ever owned. In the vertical position it sounds like a hair dryer. Since I've moved it to the horizontal position it's not so bad, but I have to turn the volume up a bit for it to be drowned up completely by the game noise.

Pretty loud when running games. Quiet otherwise.

I don't think I've ever owned a noisiest console. Except for the Dreamcast, but that was only when the drive was accessing data, not all the time.

Mine is pretty loud (I use it vertically - dont remember how loud it was horizontal)

Not loud enough for me to notice/care when actually doing something. But I notice it when I leave it idling and im just browsing the web in silence.

Louder than my refridgerator and PC

So, not having in vertical position counts, then. (which is good thing for me though - as I will try to swap my Xbox with X360 at exact position.) Interesting...

Don't know what the fuss is about - horizontal and a tiny bit louder than the original xbox. DVD drive is also quiet, like any other DVD drive.

yup..whisper quiet when doing dash stuff or playing live arcade....but once you put a game in to play, you can here the fans kick in gear to cool the cpu and gpu. It doesnt bother me once I start playing as I am too blown away by the beauty of COD 2. heh

It sounds like a slightly more quiet one hand vacum cleaner.
Aslong as SH5(or other games dependent on silence) is released on PS3(if it's quiet) I won't have a problem with this.

Not a joke, mine is too. I'm a Live Arcade freak so my system rarely has a game in it, so it is, in fact, quiet for me :)

When there's a game in it, yeah it's pretty up there.

Matlock was definitely j/king.

But true, you wouldn't know it was on with no disc in it....I thought this would go without saying.

It's also nice and quiet when viewing DVDs (which we do, since the HD component out is cleaner looking than S-Video).

wow, mine is exact oppisite.

it was silent in the verticle position but i chaged to horizontal a couple days ago and you could really hear it whirling around while you play at that time.

Mine makes zero noise, vertical or hoizontal. Quietest console I've ever had actually.

So you've never owned a NES, Master System, Genesis, SNES, PSOne, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, or GameCube?

Mine is idling on the dashboard right now and annoying me. Maybe its because there is a disc in there, I don't know, but its definitely noticeable. I leave my xbox1 on all the time and I never notice it at all.

On the other hand, I have no issues with overheating or locking up so I'll gladly take a little noise.

Funny, mine never bothered me with the noise. It's a hell of a lot quieter than my Dreamcast. The thing that bugs me is the spotlight on the power supply. It lights up half the room when the lights are off.

I'm over noisy 'next gen' consoles.

I remember how awesome Pilotwings on the SFC sounded when i first plugged it in - whisper quiet BG and crystal clear acoustic synth notes. So magical. The 360 is a big bloody noisy thing which doesn't help any game with a subtle ambience (ie nothing by EA).

With a 360 turned on at my desk, I have a hard time hearing normal level talking from coworkers in adjacent desks (I can hear them fine when playing PS2 or Xbox games). It's certainly louder than my computer.

doesnt vertical=damaged discs?

No, but it does lead to higher spinning exhaust fans from less air intake from the bottom vents, probably cause there's not enough clearance for good ventilation. From everything I've heard ppl are saying it's louder when vertical, so it's probably the fans spinning at higher rpm from the chips being hotter due to the system not getting as much cool air intake compared to when you have it sitting horizontally (like mine)...

My cousin was nice enough to stop by with his Xbox 360 a couple of weeks ago and I have to say I was kind of shocked when we first booted the system up, it sounded like the cooling system for a nuclear reactor powering up in contrast to my quiet as a mouse fart gamecube and PSTwo. I guess it's all that human energy powering it.

But once we got down to some serious gaming, playing stuff like NBA 2K6, Perfect Dark Zero, Ridge Racer 6, Condemned and Need For Speed: Most Wanted, I stopped noticing it.

That's how my cousin placed his when he brought it over. I thought it was a little dice-y getting games in and out of the system since there's no little lip on the disc tray to hold the discs when the system is in that position, but in an eight hour long session of constant use, not a single disc was damaged. They came out a little warm tho, which was somewhat disconcerting, but that's about it.

Personally when I get my 360 (hopefully this January) I'm gonna place my horizontally, just cos the games sit better in the tray that way, and I'm not paranoid about the system getting tipped over. Nice to know the system stays cooler in that position.

I have my projector set to a high fan setting and that drowns out everything else. Even my PC. So I can't tell.

If I played it on a TV, I'm sure I could tell at nighttime, otherwise I've never really noticed any of my console's fans.

My 360 is really loud. Kinda got used to it, but I hope the other next gen consoles are less noisy. PS2 was loud enough :(

haha what?

more like a 32x cdrom from 1995.. it IS loud, louder than any console, even louder than DC..

but only when you play games, in the dashboard it sounds like an Xbox1 (i compared them); that is.. still louder than a GC for example
