The entire point of the article, is to show that you will be spending that much, to have the games that are on gamepass.
Which is completely pointless and irrelevant because no one would actually try or want to do that. (aside from people just being curious in general, theorycrafting has its place in nerd culture)
It`s theorycrafting presented as "analysis" and used as advertisement, or in short, clickbait.

I havent managed to finish a game yet, but I have been downloading and installing the games on the service, to see what games fits my taste.

My best game so far, is fifa 21. I know it's sport game, but honestly, I have been playing that game nonstop. And because of that, I bought fifa 22 day1.

As for my worst (not that I hate it, it's launch issues made me drop it) is outriders. Huge potential for fun game. But launch issues made it hard for me to enjoy it.

So far, I have played around 50 games. Only few were interesting for my taste. But that is it. 50 games at $20 average is $1000. So far, I saved that much.

I started gamepass seriously in May last year.
Keep in my mind, that I got little brother and sisters who use the TV, which makes it harder for me to play alot of gamepass games.

Sounds like you played 2 games properly in how long since owning Gamepass? FIFA 21 and Outriders. The other 50 games you probably never would have bought so you didn't save any money. A fair few of those 50 games probably have demos available so you could have tried them for free.

I bought alot of games that were on sale, which I haven't played it yet. It would have been the same thing with gamepass.
The only difference, is that I was exposed to those games. Which is why I was able to download them.
For the games that I buy, they don't have demos. So I have to bite the bullet, If I am spending my money. So imagine, how much it will cost me, to buy those games.

I used to spend $5 for ea play pc to play fifa, then cancel it. That is how I played fifa 17-20.

It can be argued the value of the games is actually more because it looks like they are using the cost of the games at a certain point of time.

Although it's true their calculation is correct (I'll assume it is), games added the the service start at a higher price, then as the year goes drops in price and some become total bargain binners. But many gamers will play it when its new. Which is good as they state that.

Stating the total value regardless is fun metric, but really not that important. It's like saying if you add up all the content on NF it's like $100,000 of content.

Each gamer spends XXX to buy GP, and downloads content valued at YYY based on their gaming. Even the most eager gamer isn't going to download and play even close to all the content. That calculation is the real amount you save.

While an interesting and valuable analysis, what you get out of the service will greatly depend on your gaming habits, existing library, tastes, and how much time you have to put into gaming. Someone who knows what they like and only bothers selecting titles in those genres will inevitably get less out of the service than someone who is willing to explore new titles and discover new favorites.

Personally, I've taken advantage of the Gamepass conversion trick to get 2.5 years and after about a 1.5 years on the service I've taken a look at the games I played on GP. I estimated what I would have paid for them individually and then compared to what I paid for the service. What I found is that I got my money's worth with 1 year to spare but there are some caveats. Listing some thoughts for those who care to read:

- The huge library of older titles is nice but I simply already played/own most of it. For example, only new games I played when the Bethesda library was added were Outer Wilds and Prey.
- The difference between sub and owning came into the limelight a few times when I started games and they left the service before I could complete them like FFXV.
- I found out that I didn't explore as many new games as I thought I would. Mostly because of focusing on games that fit my tastes while continuing to play my GAAS game of choice. No time.
- I consider myself a hardcore gamer and play a lot compared to average. I suspect many players will get to utilize the benefits of the service even less.
- While I got my money's worth this is at a heavily discounted rate. I'd have to reconsider when sub expires. This will greatly depend on next year's output especially first party.

Overall I am hopeful in the long run. A lot of these issues are due to the nascent nature of the service and will resolve over time. They just added Guardians of the Galaxy which I was interested in, and with Starfield coming, another one or two big titles will really push the value into the stratosphere for me. But for now it's wait and see what output/announcements they make. I can see myself being a long time sub or someone who gets a month here and there to try out the bigger titles. However, judging from my own use case on the service for a while I don't agree that this is god's gift to gaming like some claim it is. There is a ton of value in Gamepass but not for everyone.

Sorry for the long post.

meh, I'm subscribed for 3 years; but unless there I something on there i actually want to play; none of this shit madders.

I'm not gonna play something just because its free. Too many actually good games coming out and not enough time.
This describes my game pass experience…

I have had the service for almost 3 years now and I can’t help but think it’s a waste for me because I barely play anything in GP.

Been playing the PS5 more even though I have to buy games at full price there. GP needs some more great games to create some excitement for the platform again.

The “it’s the best deal in gaming” tag line is getting old because some people have more of an issue of time versus trying to just save money. I don’t mind paying full price if I am getting quality games that is worth my time.

Just like piracy is potential loss of a sale, with Gamepass you can potentially save money, I guess. What a dumb article.

Those small saves allows you to afford day1 games. That is the one thing I like about gamepass.
Elden ring and Horizon forbidden west were affordable because of that. I dont like spending money on day1 games. But when I have security like that, then i can justify spending those $60 (That is like 3 $20 games on sale).
If you just bought ER and HFW and didn’t sub to gamepass, you’d be saving money. Not sure what point you are trying to make here.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Game Pass continues to be an amazing service.

So many smaller indie games I've played and completed that I would never have if I had to buy them separately.

The concerns about "but what about only the games I want to play ?" are unfounded.

The services has such a great element of discovery which is one of the key features IMO.

If you just bought ER and HFW and didn’t sub to gamepass, you’d be saving money. Not sure what point you are trying to make here.

This only works if you only plan to play ER and HFW through an entire calendar year and nothing else, lol.

Even then, if you have just a little bit of online savvy you can get game pass for 3 years under $120~140. Not the $180 for single year that kingfey kingfey is talking about.

The Gold to GPU conversion is popular and i bet a lot of users on GAF use it.

Gamepass is only a value to people who just play anything thrown at them. Most people have responsibilities and time constraints.

Netflix is the same thing, too many choices of 99% bleh

Not really fair to describe it as ''thrown at them'' as you can see the entire library before you pay for the month, therefore you can be selective. Also, if you have time constraints, just don't pay for the next month.

I understand that, but you can just stop subbing whilst you plough through other games, which is exactly what I am doing, thus Saving money.

Indeed, you have the option to sub monthly, quarterly or hell just keep making new accounts to abuse the $1 if you feel like it.

I was/am happy to give ~$120 for 3 years of sub. The amount of games I've played via GP, whether they're first party day ones, third party day ones or just in the catalogue, has paid for the 3 years service maybe ten times over already.

Not even including many gems like procession to calvary, a game I would probably never have tried if it wasn't on game pass, and I ended up getting 1000G on cause I liked it so much.

To be fair to Gamepass, Microsoft are the highest rated publisher of the past year. All their games are on Gamepass (or will be in the case of those timed exclusives on other platforms). I see quite a few people saying that the games on Gamepass aren't any good, but there are highly rated games on there. There are some that don't score so highly, but if you took the top 100+ games on any platform, even critical darlings like the Switch, there just aren't that many games that score 90+ (Metacritic says there are 23 switch games scoring 90+), seems unfair to say that just because every game isn't Breath Of The Wild / Elden Ring then they're no good.

So you think swapping from ultimate to gold to play online every other month is a smart choice?

I managed to allocate those to ER and HFW, because gamepass had me covered for that month. I could have went over the budget, and spent more than I can chew.

The smart choice is get whatever you will find value in. The point is he mischaracterised gamepass as something you get blindly then hope something you like is ''thrown at you'' which is not true.

No that was me that said that, and no not everyone plays just anything just to play games. I would say the old saying that people buy COD and Fifa or madden every year is a large part of the gamers out there. You play what you like.

Since day one XSX I can say I played flight sim for about 10 hours and the Horizon games for about 10 hours. I play what I want to play even if there are games out there that are great but not my style. I got gamepass for 3 years for $1 so I'm not really complaining but no way I would pay retail for it, but thats me.

What kind of argument is this? 90% of these games, you would never buy anyway...

Gamepass makes sense for Microsoft Games and they are very few right now...

I'm a gamer who gets a lot of games, rarely finishes any of them and I've long spent too much money on games I have never played or only played a bit..
gamepass was a major thing to me.. I've just stopped buying games otheer than ones I fully intend to play through.

The analysis is showing you the value. No one is saying you have to buy all the games. I'm playing GotG right now and I wouldn't have played it otherwise. It's a fantastic game. Thanks for Game Pass I discovered this great game I would never have paid for. There are countless examples of this. Microsoft does a great job with curating the GP selection. If you're playing one game a year then no, it's not the best value in gaming. But I've already played enough YTD that I've "recouped" my costs. It's just that good!
You didn't read reviews of the game? Didn't hear the chatter on sites like Neogaf that were talking about how great it is? How did some of you "discover" games in the past?!?

After that marvel game, people are very careful about any marvel game. That marvel game fucked up any future which that game had.
Its no wonder normal people wont risk buying that game.

If this were true in general, Guardians wouldn't be considered a sales failure by it's parent company.

Yeah, right, like anyone would be interested in buying every game on Gamepass. xD

I guess the same people who would buy every movie and series on Netflix: no one.

This post was created in partnership with Lenovo Legion and Game Pass, where you can enjoy three free months of Game Pass with access to hundreds of games on eligible Lenovo laptops.

Erm... OK.

They shouldn't be. I mean, it even says so in the OP that this article is brought to you by "Gamepass". Like a literal advertisement. It's weird.
It is extremely weird. Is the point to debate the value proposition of GP, or is the point to bait people into perceived console war arguments? I do not really see the middle ground for why someone posts an advertisement of this sort.

Assuming the point is to debate the value proposition, then my take is that this advertisement kind of proves that it has not been worth paying for YET to ME. The reason is that the pitch involves the value of games I never want anything to do with, without any data about how much I would have saved if I bought a Series X/S and subscribed for the MS games only. The only relevant data for ME is the 2-3 year breakdown of what the MS games I really wanted to play would cost to own versus rent. That also gets tricky because one game could launch day 1 and the other at the end of year 2 or 3, but the data would at least be relevant to ME.

Is GP a value service? Yes.

Will GP save you money? Only if you spend more than $10 a month on games.

* And you are willing to stop buying games that don't come to Gamepass.

So it might not save you money, ever, it can be an amazing service for a great price but not a substitute for your current situation buying games.

Great in the slow periods. Not much value at times like now where there is a ton of great stuff out and coming out.

All depends

GamePass is great, I'm gonna play Guardians of the Galaxy and Hitman 3 for 1€ this month. But this comparison is still pretty silly.

It's like saying you save a million dollars from Prime Video or Spotify lol.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I remember people making a big deal about PS+ being a rental service and you don't actually own the games.
And how it was a rip off because once you stop subscribing you didn't have access to those games until you resubscribed.
Now we have an actual rental service which you don't actually keep the games and they disappear from the service after a period of time.
But those same people are saying it the best deal in gaming.
Funny that.
