How much life is left in the GBA?

Will we still be seeing excellent games in 6 months? 12 months? Or is KH the last major title for the GBA? Any games on the horizon?

I think it's safe to say now that the DS will atleast be a moderate success, so i'm worried they might neglect the GBA. There should really be no reason to, since the DS also plays GBA games, but they'll probably put some GBA games (slightly modified to use either touch or dual screen) exclusively on the DS to boost system sales.

Pokemon (sigh), wario twisted, yoshi grivational whatever, and minish cap are the only nintendo GBA games left for the US

I don't think we'll see mother 3 and another fire emblem is a possibility..

I think next year is it's last year.

About six months ago, I would've said that GBA will still be making a killing three years from now, maybe even four or five.

But I really don't know, anymore. I really think PSP and DS are going to knock the wind out of GBA faster than we previously thought. Not this year. Probably not early or mid next year But in late 2005 or early 2006, I think GBA will quickly be on its way out.
 
Wait, I just checked the EB release list, and a title called Racing Gears Advance is on the list. If this is the game I'm thinking of, then it looked very good in the previews. This could be one worth getting when it comes out.
 
I think it has a good year left in it. Now if you mean only how much time till game releases taper off, heck it could be as early as 6 months from now. Depends how well the DS sells I suppose.
 
the DS is backwards compatible and there are millions of GBAs out there - i don't see support suddenly dying until other competing platforms pick up a lot more momentum.
 
I have at least 20 AAA GBA games that I haven't got round to playing yet thanks to the crazy number of great games that keep coming out for it. So there's a lot of life left in mine, that's for sure.

Good point. There are some devs in the portable industry that do not have extensive work with 3d or powerful hardware, they will continue to make 'simple', aka GBA, games.

there are still a lot of old gba games i'd like to go back and play, but i can't think of any upcoming releases i'm really looking forward to. maybe wario ware. gba had a great run. it made a portable gamer out of me. but it looks pretty dead.
 
Why are you guys throwing in the towel on it so soon?

I just bought two new games today. :(

It's like you're smacking my child in the face for not coloring pretty enough. :(
 
When is a system officially determined dead? Is it when first parties, or in Sony's case, major third parties releasing games on it? Or is it when no more games are developed for it? i think it'll be at least a couple of years before the latter happens. Developers/publishers will have to choose between the possibly greater target market of the GBA versus possibly lower licensing fees on the DS. Systems like the SNES and PS saw games years into the next generation of respective hardware. i expect the same with the GBA.

True. I wouldn't mind playing two or three more Fire Emblems on it.

Although, Fire Emblem with Mic Support and online on the DS.. now that would be hot.
 
If somebody can bring out another portable with as much comfort or portability as the Gameboy Advance SP, and back it up with an equal number of quality games, then you can stick a fork in it.
 
4 years untill its pulled from the shelves.

Its really just fine for 2D gaming. I actually expect NCL to extend the life by releasing a backlit GBA with an even slimmer profile than the SP.

Now that the DS is on the shelves we will see pretty soon if the GBA still sells good enough. I think the system won't be dropped soon. There will be a lot of good games in the coming year.

DKC3, Mother3, wario ware, kingdom hearts, yoshi and pokemon will keep the system alive for at least 2 more years.

Nintendo should bring magical vacation to te US and europe.
 
There's no chance the DS can replace the GBA so soon. Unlike the other systems, the GBA is the beneficiary of implusive parent sales. When I worked retail, I'd have parents buy them for thier kids on a whim. This was when the unit cost a hundred bucks. Now that it's a mere 80, I don't see the sales being slowed down too much. Think about it. You're a parent, and you want something to entertain your kid. You see PSP, DS, and GBA. Hmm. $150, $150, or $80? Tough choice. Oh, and look, it even has that little monsters game Jimmy talks so much about. Maybe I'll buy a red one for little Sally too!

It'll be interesting to see if the DS can surpass the GBA's hardware sales this holiday. But I sincerely doubt it.
 
Yes, I think GBA is technically good enough to exist in the affordable sub market below DS. Much like NES did when restyled and brought out at a lower price in Christmas 1991, under SNES. there continued to be new games released for NES for another 2/3 years, the same will happen with GBA. :)
 
As I recall, the retooled NES didn't get released until 1993, right before they pulled the plug. Strangely enough, though, the NES and SNES were able to coexist two years earlier, even though the price difference in the system was only 20-30 dollars.

What is Pac Pinball from Namco? I'm guessing it's some sort of Pac-Man-themed pinball game. I'd like to find out more information on this one. I could use a good GBA pinball game--I was looking forward to Mario Pinball Land, but avoided it once the large amount of negative reviews started piling in.
 
Dead. Just look at the release lists. Last year at this time, there were freaking dozens of games a week, now there are less than 10 in some months. Nintendo has a few more games (that are aleardy out in Japan), but main focus has moved to the DS. The SP burned bright, but died quickly under PILES of pos 3rd party games.
