It’s crazy how much a similar fate Microsoft and Sega had

Should I sell my Series X?

In no known or unknown universe or dimension is Microsoft capable of releasing something with the nuclear blast-levels of sheer joy and fun as Crazy Taxi.

Umm… no, not really.

The history of Sega consoles:

  4. SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis in the US) – 1988 (Japan), 1989 (US), 1990 (Europe)
  5. Game Gear – 1990
  6. SEGA Nomad – 1995 (US only)
  7. SEGA Saturn – 1994 (Japan), 1995 (US/Europe)
  8. SEGA Dreamcast – 1998 (Japan), 1999 (US/Europe)

The history of XBOX:

Microsoft started to decline with the launch of the Xbox One, especially outside the United States.

Which kind of makes what happens to Xbox turning out this way even more embarrassing. Tons of money doesn't mean much against bad decision after bad decision.
In reality tons of money actually makes the outcome worse in this kind of scenario. When there is no penalty for failure, there is no sense of urgency, and no motivation to actually produce a good product

Which explains all Microsoft products and services actually, not just gaming

I wasn't really tied into the meta of what was happening behind the scenes with Sega in the late 90s ( I doubt many were back then), so I was shocked when the plug was pulled on the Dreamcast. From my POV I was having the time of my life with that system when it was out.

But they're really nothing alike, asides from the obvious difference in scale. Microsoft just seems so sterile and cold by comparison( and that's in relation to every other major console manufacturer the past 30 years, not just Sega), just a giant ole mega-corp whose tried to buy its way to success in lieu of the creative will and talent to nurture enduring legacy IP. I wish they'd just sell off some of their properties to someone who may actually do them justice. At this point I'm just waiting for them to announce that Fable is getting cancelled. I was a huge OG Xbox/360 fan, but they're losing me.

To be fair the Series has sold over 32M, Dreamcast only sold 9M. In fact the Series is more on par with Nintendo 64 which sold about 32M as well and 11M more than Gamecube which sold about 22M.

Y'all keep making these threads, ima keep making this same meme over and over.
I wonder why there would be so many "Xbox is dead" threads? Just when they axed several studios. After years of not giving numbers in their reports. With an Asus 3DO scheme in the horizon. And after all their games coming to the rival platform…

The trajectory of Microsoft and Sega consoles in uncanny, and Halo's decline mirrors that of Sonic too!

Xbox = Master System
Debut console releases way after the established market leader (PS2/NES), is much more advanced graphically but ultimately only manages to gain success in a single market (America for Xbox, Europe for Master System).

Xbox 360 = MegaDrive
Second console launches well ahead of competition (PS3/SNES) with success being more global compared to a single territory. This is the golden age in terms of sales, brand mass awareness and overall positivity. Eventually the established competitor's console sales overtake it, but they're more than in the race having stolen marketshare. However towards the end of the generation there's a focus on hardware add-ons (Kinect, MegaCD, 32X) which begins to annoy the fanbase and results in a lack of focus.

Xbox One = Saturn
A series of boneheaded decisions and lack of understanding of the consumer base culminate in a disasterous E3 reveal. The console launches at a way higher price than the competition (PS4/PS1) with multiplatform games running much worse resulting in a lot of marketshare being lost. To compensate, there's a shift towards releasing the biggest games on PC. Only manages to do well in a single market (America for XBO, Japan for Saturn)

Xbox Series = Dreamcast
Much smarter decisions are made in the development of the console meaning that graphically the machine competes well with the rival (PS5/PS2). However their competitor is doing well and most people see no need to switch, especially when backwards compatibility is being offered. There's also a HUGE focus on online that doesn't pan out as well as expected (GamePass = SegaNet). Eventually, games start to be released on competitor's consoles.

Halo = Sonic
The first 3 or 4 games are a huge critical and commercial success becoming the face of the entire brand. Following this the franchise is handed to another developer (343 Industries and Traveller's Tales) who manage to make some decent games but are nowhere near in terms of critical acclaim and success of the first 4 games.
Thank you ChatGPT

While this is true, xbox has prioritised software. Hardware in current form is getting in the way.

I dont see how any parallel can be drawn. Unless you are a fanboy and refuse to see actual reality.
There's a straaaaaaaaaw maaaaaaaaan waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds

Not really, or at all. For SEGA it felt unfair, sure they made bad choices but not that much and they didn't have the money to overcome 1% of the mistakes that had made MS. If we had to compare the level of "mistakes" SEGA could endure, I'd say it wouldn't be able to survive the Xbox One launch with Kinect 2.

And for SEGA it felt SO unfair because the Dreamcast was so capable, releasing exclusives GOTYs at a monthly rate. Every first party was golden, more than any First party that MS ever released and that Sony have been releasing for years.

But people were just waiting for the PS2, no matter what.

So when the Dreamcast "died" it felt SO unfair. If the Xbox Series die now, it wouldn't feel unfair at all, 0 exclusives, 1st party being "meh" for over a decade, games cancelled again and again, making huge benefits and still firing people by thousands... No, the end of Xbox and of MS being in the gaming market, it's what would feel to be fair.

One cannot become big game developer by limiting themselves by arbitrary shackles like consoles.

Pretty sure Playstation is greatful for what xbox has done, opening the flood gates.

Agreed, but comparing them Sega and Microsoft as third party publishers is a completely different topic and not relevant to this thread.

Phil Spencer is essentially a puppet for higher-ups in Microsoft, and he will take the blame and fuck off when they eventually pull the plug.
MS is a mega-corp where gaming is a side-business with so many suits in charge of the thing I don't even know who's pulling the strings.

I don't see how any of this can be compared to Sega.

Both had successful runs with there second consoles 360 and Genesis. Then they both went downhill after and slowly went into third party after there 4th console release Series S/X and Dreamcast. I'm not including the 32X, Sega CD and Xbox one X.
I saw Xbox og haters back in 6th gen, and I saw who think Dreamcast was a weird console. I don't trust fresh opinions that came right out of the oven cause %90 of the times, it's personal.
