I'm in Canada. Yes I'm posting this from work. Just want to know if there is a legal period or is it just a matter of do you want to be an asshole or not.

goddamit, Griese!
2 weeks is usually the norm, though it's not always required.

Depends on your job really. No one can really force you to come in if you have the urge to quit that badly, though.

I don't know what the law is in Canada, but the appropriate length of time depends on the position. For fairly junior positions, or if there is an obvious successor or extra capacity in place to cover for your departure, the usual custom is two weeks. But for senior or strategic positions, you'd be an ass to leave with less than three or four weeks' notice...at least in my opinion.

Two weeks is standard in the US. The least i've given is one week, and it was because i was starting another job immediately, and the new job needed me ASAP. Simply quitting without notice leaves you on bad terms with the current employer, and could come to bite you in the ass later.

What about vacation time? I have 3 weeks vacation. If I choose to leave in 2 weeks then do I still get paid for another 3 weeks or would I have to take the vacation first?

2 weeks. It's not mandatory, just a nice gesture. You can walk out of just about any job. PEACE.

IAWTP. Vacation and sick days don't really factor, heh. Are you going to tell them: I quit in two weeks, but I am going to take the next two weeks off with vacation time.

;)

Well I'd be pretty dumb to let of 3 weeks pay for doing nothing wouldn't I? But if a new job needed me to start right away then I'd have to give it up I guess.

Yeah protocol is 2 weeks but I remember I once quit a job giving two days notice. I hated the fucking job and that was my one small moment of revenge for putting up with a lot of shit. Of course, they got the last laugh, because I can't put that job down now as a reference.

Unused vacation (unless you're on a probationary period where vacation is not useable until you complete it) will be cashed out and you'll see a separate check for it. Sick however, you lose.

I had a pretty shitty job at the public library, shelving books when I was in high school, even though I spent half the time playing Dragon Warrior on the GBC in the handicap stall. The library director got wise to my excessive alone-time, but I walked out before any shit started. Come to think of it, I was a major asshole.

You aren't required to give any unless you're under an employment contract that states otherwise. As an at will employee you can be fired on the spot for pretty much any reason (within limit) and you can leave a job on the spot.

2 weeks notice is generally customary if you want to leave a job, but be ready to leave on the day that you give your notice as I know many employers who release employees on the day that they give notice (or shortly thereafter).

Haha there is no chance they'd let me go on the same day. I'm basically one of three guys who deal with the entire company's IT problems. They'll probably even make me train the new guy for a week.

i've found that if you dont show up for three days in a row and dont ring in to let them know your sick (or chucking a sickie), they usually fire you for "abandonment of employment".

happy to say this has happened more than once :)

Actually, that is MORE of a reason to fire you on the spot. Given the risk of you putting in all kinds of backdoors or other security holes, they almost HAVE to let you go, whether it's an amicable separation or not.
