How passionate do you get about sports?

I have to admit I'm a big sports fan. Pretty much any sport I can watch, even golf and tennis. But mainly I'm a baseball/football/hockey fan. And I must say I lost more than a few minutes of sleep last night over the fact that Rivera blew that game in the ninth against the Red Sox. I watched that whole game, all five hours (with rain delays) only to see it slip away in the last 15 minutes. And the LAST thing I like seeing is giving Sawks fans something to cheer about (though it does make it more sweet when we ultimately just break their hearts in gut wrenching fashion anyway).

I'd say football is another sport I'm really into. If my Giants lose, I'm none too pleased for a while. So it looks like I'm in for another rough year. So how passionate about sports do you get? And what's your most memorable spots-watching moments?

A few years ago I used to be like that with the Mets and then I realized I wasn't getting any sleep. I don't take sports too seriously anymore; I only watch them rarely.

Not at all, though my friends love NRL (one of a few football codes followed in Australia) and I often get sort of dragged into it.

The past few years I found myself hotly defending the Lakers against retard haters more than ever wanted to. Thankfully they're a joke team in the NBA now, so I can be a Laker fan in peace..

I was drunk last night at a party at MIT and me and the only other Yankee fan there (he actually is originally from a town about 15 minutes away from me on Long Island) were following the game with a live webcast. We were both rubbing it in everyone's face while the Yankees were winning the whole game, and I stopped paying attention around the 7th to watch some Harold and Kumar. All of a sudden, my friend came running in saying that the Red Sox were winning 3-2 and it was the bottom of the 9th. And then by the time we got back to the computer, the Yankees had lost. I looked at the play-by-play and couldn't believe the way in Rivera had given it up. I mean...he walked the first guy and also hit a batter. Damn it Rivera. Needless to say, that taunting blew up in our face.

But yea, I can get pretty emotional about all my sports. Knicks back when they were good (I hate Jordan and Miller), the Jets, but now I'm going to be so emotional about the Yankees. I'm in the wrong town, but it's going to be fucking amazing to be here for the ALCS when the Yankees break Boston's heart again. If not, I'm going to be one miserable bastard.

And that picture is awesome.

Have yelled at a chick to leave cuz she asked me to not yell as much.
*after watching a heartbreaking loss to the Arizona Cardinals at the hands of Jake Plummer and yelling for 5 minutes*
She: 'Can you please stop yelling?'
Me: 'You can leave!'

That was a fun argument.

After that Game 1 win in LA by the Sixers, I jumped out of a 1st floor window onto the pavement 8 feet below, and got a nice foot injury. We yelled out on our stoop for about an hour then some guy comes out to tell us to be quiet.

Get severly depressed after & leading up to a big loss. Won't say a damn thing for about 2 hours.

I was pretty tore up 2 years ago I think, maybe 3 when the Pats beat the Steelers in the AFC Championship game...I was so sure it was our year :(

I was also tore up in the 2001 NBA Finals when the Sixers teased me with a hard win then proceeded to drop 4 in a row :(

Or how about the Indians being one strike away from winning the world series then choking and losin to the damn Marlins :(

Yes my sports life sucks.None of my teams have won a championship while I've been alive, boo urns.

i like watching all of the Big 3 (football, baseball, basketball) as well as the occasional soccer match, but the only sport i get REALLY passionate about is basketball and my lakers. I actually get stomach aches when they lose. This last years finals gave me an ulcer.

I've always been a big Angels fan. Ever since 1993 (which when I went to my first baseball game to watch the Jays play the Angels). Back then, I remember Cecil Fielder, Jim Edmonds, JT Snow, Tim Salmon, and Chuck Finley all on the team. Only one remains now.

2002 was such a great year to be an Angels fan. I remember me thinking, "Wow, maybe they'll make it to the playoffs!" Then, "They made it to the playoffs! They probably wont beat the Yankees though." Then, "Holy crap, the Angels can get to the World Series!!" Then finally, "They've gotten this far, it's further than they've ever gone. Great for them either outcome. What a fantastic post/season."

The best game I've ever seen was Game 6 of the 2002 World Series. My oh my. When Troy Glaus hit that winning run in, I was literally on my feet, screaming at the top of my lungs at the television for Garret Anderson to keep running. My dad is a giant Dodgers fan, who watched Kurt Gibson's big home run in '88 or '89 in the World Series, and he said that the Game 6 in 2002 was even better.

I also like watching basketball. Don't like the attitudes of Shaq or Kobe, but I liked it when the Lakers won the 2000 championship.

You have no idea how obsessed I am with hockey/the Canucks. I would literally give up a month- possibly an entire year of my life- if the Canucks were to win the Stanley Cup.

As my missus will tell you I am VERY passionate about the ups and downs of the Ravens.... their losses rip straight through my FUCKIN HEART HOW THE HELL COULD THEY PLAY LIKE THAT 2IO3UI234OU5I4O32.... ahem....

EDIT: Back when I lived in upstate NY the Knicks use to break my heart ever year in the playoffs.... and man when the Giants won that Superbowl when Scott Norwood missed... the FG attempt.... ah the memories... oh yeah pretty passionate about the Lakers too...but that passion followed Shaq to Miami.

i used to be very passionate, but now just a simple check of the scores and standings will suffice for me.

however, the florida. st vs miami game last week was the most passionate and fired up i've been for a game in a very long time.

too bad chris rix is such a fucking dipshit.

I completely understand passion for sports (duh). But I cannot stand people who get all fucking anal towards ME when their team is losing/lost like I punched them in the balls or something. Close friends of mine are like this, and I can't help but be convinced that's it's all a pathetic act.

That was the worst game ever! I still can't believe how fucking lucky the Pats were against the Steelers and the Raiders. I mean they basically beat the Steelers (my team) with fucking special teams. How the fuck do you score 2 TDs with special touchdowns. :(

I have a lot of sports memories. Being a hater of Jordan since he beat my Lakers in '91, I had a lot of negative moments as he kept breaking the hearts of MJ haters everywhere.

The Steelers have given me way too many negative memories to count. One day we will be delivered from mediocrity with a great QB though.

The Lakers of the last 5 years especially have given me the best moments I would have to say, because they have just pulled a lot of shit out of their ass, sort of like what MJ did to us haters, but this time I was on the other side of it. The memories of all the miracles they had in the last 5 years will be enough to keep my going while they are a good but not great team and while I wait for Kobe to deliver us a few more and pray for the day the Steelers have a good team again.

I am very obsessed with NBA basketball. Last year I didn't play any ESPN fantasy ball because the year before I never slept. I don't even really have a favorite team anymore. It was the Bulls growing up, and I have been cheering for the sixers for a long time but Iverson antics have worn on me. I did feel pretty sick when Boozer screwed over my cavs. I haven't really been that into hockey because of all the crappy moves that have happened here in Calgary over the past 8 to 10 years but I always followed them, went to a couple of games a year etc... and hoped for next year.
Well last season was pretty freakin crazy. It was a very nice ride. And it was great to be a part of that again.
But I think I would have to say I'm 8.5 out of 10 on the passionate about sports meter.

When alone watching a game...I can get...well...let's just say I have to hide breakable things when a loss is coming.

Around others though, I control myself so I don't look like a total douche.

Even while at work...I'm more into the games than some of the paying fans. Some bonehead plays the Texans make drive me nuts...argh!

I remember being on cloud fucking 9 in 1994 and 1995. Rockets were kicking ass, taking names, and then running their asses over. Oh man those two years were fucking fun.

I used to follow baseball and basketball, but I haven't for several years. I like both games and I'd play either, but watching them just seems dull to me now.

Plus, I don't understand the whole team loyalty thing that brings up comments like "we won", "we got so and so", etc. You're not on the team, you're just some fan with fickle tastes... like how Laker fans are all like "Yeah, Shaq rules, best player ever", then he leaves and they hate him all of a sudden. If he's a good player, the uniform he wears shouldn't have a bearing on that.

All that said, I can still enjoy a game every now and again, and while I don't really cheer for much, this one always makes me smile:

I don't like to play or watch sports. For baseball, it's the same stuff everytime for me. You see a person swing a bat, run for base, catch the ball, repeat. Football is a bit more exciting and random, but only during the super bowl and such. Quite frankly, I'll never ever waste my time or money at a baseball game ever again. The last time I did, like 6 years ago, I ended up leaving early due to immense boredom. Ah well.

Without the fans who invest themselves in the teams, there would be no teams. Simple as that.

That's fine and well, but unless you actually own a portion of the team or something, you're not part of the team.

True, but there's a difference between someone from New York referencing a 8-5 win over the Boston Red Sox as "We beat them" and someone saying "I'm on the New York Yankees". The "we" is often in reference to the city/state.

Do you see a problem with people saying "we" when referring to their country in the Olympics?

Miguel

For the most part, I'm a Red Sox fan, but I don't say "we won" when talking to a friend about them.

But, if I'm talking about, the HOUSTON Rockets...yes, I say "WE WON"

What is your city? Do you own the city? No, but it's still your city.
Your team, yes, it's "your team" by virtue of you being a fan, and pumping money into their franchise. You don't necessarily own the team, but you do immerse yourself into them so much, that if you had the money, you probably would own them. I'm throwing out like 8 different ideas in one post.

Basically, if you're really into sports, you feel you are part of the team. The term Home-court/field/ice advantage isn't just for show, the fans CAN make a difference sometimes. Just watch some college football games, which are probably the biggest example.

Anyway, I'm done ranting. My Texans play tomorrow and I need some sleep.

Yes.

"Our country's team" or something works for me, but I've seen people who seriously get all like "HA IN YOUR FACE WE WON" and I'm like, "dick, you work in a grocery store, how did you help?"

I can see having a favorite team and that's like "my team" or whatever, but it... well, I live in So Cal. Idiots act like they're actually ON the Lakers, and it is irritating.

Right, but for the most part, fans are quick to switch when things go bad, and then go "Oh, I liked them all along." That's what separates it for me... but like I said earlier, it's probably just being surrounded by bandwagon Laker/Angel fans.

I don't see many Rally Monkeys any more, but two years ago they were a hot item...

No, you hate bandwagon fans then. Everybody hates those. There's nothing wrong with saying "my team" or "our team" or "we won" or something when you also come back the next day and say "Fucking bullshit, I can't believe we lost."

Again, everybody hates bandwagon fans, and that's what you seem to be refering to.

No, I just hate the term usage, is all. I mean, you don't see people buying coke only and going "Ha, we won in overall sales"... though you do see that in the gaming forum, so I dunno.

It's just a silly attachment to me, personally.

i think almost every professional athlete will tell you that the fans are without a doubt a part of the team.

Yeah, because they like collecting a check. But if some big fat guy was like, "Hey Culpepper, let me take the snap, I'm part of the team!" they're going to tell him to gtfo.

I'm not putting down a love for a sport or a devotion for a team, I'm just saying that there is no "we" in team.

you're taking this way too literally.

if the yankees win and i say "YES WE WON!" im not looking for jeter so i can give him a slap on the ass. no one who says "we" literally means "we".
