How the hell do people come up with these crazy ideas?

Haha the day after Halo 2 came out a friend tried to tell me it sold 120 million copies. :lol
I tried to explain to him that the number was 4x the number of Xbox's in the fricken world. And then I come off as a smartass. I CAN'T WIN!

Shoulda done what I did when I got into a situation like that; call them on the fact they were trying to be a smartass about sales figures to you.

It wasn't like that. He was telling me how his dad was teasing him because my friend was worried about it being sold out, but then the dad later apologize because 'on the news' he heard it sold 120 million copies. Probably confused the $120 million dollars worth of sales and got mixed up.

When I used to work the electronics boat at Target, I'd deal with that all the time. Half the time I just nod my head and go, "OH REALLY THAT'S AMAZING!" because there's no arguing with these people.

I do remember before the PSP came out, there was this guy who was over at the glass area telling all the customers that the PSP would play all the PS2 games, so don't buy their kids the Nintendo DS. There were like two kids wanting a DS that day and they started crying because their parents were like, "Well we're not going to waste money on a new handheld if the other new one plays all your PlayStation games!"

I knew a complete loser named Bo Butler who said he unlocked Sonic and Gohan (DBZ) in SSBM. I said, that's bullshit and impossible, Sega wouldn't allow it and neither would however held the rights to Dragon Ball Z. Neither of these companies were in the credits. Later he'd go on to "clarify" that he used a game shark code the unlocks a character editor. I told him (because at the time there wasn't yet) a gameshark for GCN. He said he imported one. I told no, stupid asshole there isn't one in Japan either, so fuck off I hate you die you're so stupid.

Bo Butler is an asshole.

I would have choked a bitch.

Ah, I was thinking it was some fanboy trying to feel important.

And here some GAFFERs were dismissing the importance of backwards compatibility. What is really important is the need of convgence of gaming formats. Backwards compatibility is just one step closer to that ideal goal.

why don't console makers make it so they can play the other's games?

if I recall, coleco made an adaptor that allowed you to play atari games. Why was that legal and if it WAS legal why don't console makers do it nowadays?

is it because hardware was so simplistic back then that you could make such an adaptor without reverse engineering?

is it an actual legal question or just an effort question? Like MS COULD make an xbox 360 adaptor that played ps3 games but it would just be way too hard?

Ignoring the legal issues there (of which there are probably at least some) and the technical issues, such an adaptor would be counterproductive to Microsoft -- it would sell Microsoft hardware and PS3 software, resulting in losses for Microsoft (since most consoles are sold at a loss and gain profit through software) and revenue for Sony.

why did coleco do it then? =\ stupidity?

make adaptor -> have xbox360 sales skyrocket -> become the 'winner' -> have largest market share for the next generation due to hyp from being the previous winner

plus they could introduce it later after they are capable of making a profit both on the adaptor and xbox's in general.

Can't help you there...my knowledge of early console history is sketchy at best.

Well, even then, my post was prefaced by "ignoring legal and technical issues".

My favorite was this one guy that would come in really hyped about some bit of info that he read somewhere.

"Man, you hear about that new Dreamcast Zip Drive? Yeah, it BOOSTS the POWER of the system!"

There was a kid who came in and said his friend got an Xbox that burns games. Not only that, but it somehow magically compressed all the data from Xbox DVDs to a standard CDR. Just stick an original game in, then stick a CDR in the drive and out pops a freshly burnt game. i really wish i had spent/wasted the time to grill him on that.

Of course the impending PS2 launch brought out the usual suspects of exaggerated PS2 performance claims, none of which unique to anyone who browsed the web or talked to prospective PS2 owners in 2000.

On the topic of prospective PS2 owners, i always found it klinda odd the number of people who wanted a PS2 before its launch because it played DVDs versus getting a Dreamcast and a real DVD player for the same price or lower. Granted, we know the fate of the Dreamcast, but a lot of these people weren't even sold on the games on the PS2, just on the fact that it played DVDs.

A lack of education sums it up nicely. Instead of casually playing they are gaming instead of furthering there homework.

I heard that there was a subscription based next generation console coming out sometime this year, and that there were loads of big names involved with it.....

Can't remember its name though...

(someone take the bait)

Maybe things like the Xbox 360 MTV unveiling aren't to show off the system, but are rather a way for Microsoft to inject lies subconsciously into the minds of the weak.

When all else false, start a conspiracy theory.

Atari did sue. It didn't have a case because the VCS was made from off the shelf parts.

I remember that a lot of people had a lot of weird ideas regarding the GC controller when the GC first launched. I would read on other forums that people were complaining that the controller was too small compared to the Dual Shock controller, even though the GC controller is probably a little larger than the DS2. People also argued that it was a hassle to move there thumb all the way from the "A" button to the "b" button on the GC controller, even though you can hit both buttons simultaneously with one thumb.

about 6 months ago a co-worker swore to me up and down that the PS3 would use distributed processing (using other peoples PS3s over the net to make games run faster) and that he was going to buy 2 and they would somehow work together to run games 2x as fast :lol

There was a videogames program on TV here in Portugal. Me and my friend used to watch it. When Gran Turismo 2 came out, one of the TV program host said it was "so good you could smell tire rubber coming out of the CD", so my friend actually believed that there was rubber on the base of the CD so the laser would burn it and actually make it smell like that! I told him he was way out of his mind but he was so stubborn that on a videogames store he asked the clerk if there was any rubber on the base of the GT2 CD. Well, you all know the answer to that! :lol
He made a complete fool of himself.

An EB employee said the original PSX never had a problem with an overheating laser where you had to flip it upside down to work.

Another one said there was no way Sega would ever make games for Nintedo or Sony, this was said the day before their announcement.

I don't really care what people want to think, if they don't believe them when I correct them I just say, "ok we'll see."

I remember I got fooled a couple times when I was young.

I was complaining how I couldn't kill the beetles with a fireball in Super Mario Brothers and my brother told me I had to get them right in the eye. So there I was for the next little while trying to hit them perfectly in the eye.

Then there was this kid at school that told me he had got past the minus world but he never would tell me how. He had a subscription to Nintendo Power so I figured it said in there, I keeped bugging him and bugging him about it but he would never tell. I even eventually called up the Nintendo hint line and they said they weren't allowed to talk about that part of the game. This one had me fooled for a few years.

Oh that Drinky Crow.

I remember sitting next to two G4 interns at E3 a few years ago who were all worked up for Mario Sunshine coming out for the PS2. They were perplexed as to why only the GameCube version was playable on the show floor since the PS2 is the better selling console. :lol

I really wanted to but in and crush their hopes, but I was enjoying my coffee.

I bought WarioWare Twisted yesterday at Best Buy and the cashier looked at the back of the box. I looked at him with a questioning look and he said 'I have the other two on my Xbox. These games are really great!'.

I suppose it's possible he was talking about a modded Xbox playing the original GBA WarioWare on an emulator, but either way that's NOT a great thing to tell someone who may not be well educated in games.

I'm sure many cashiers who very well educated have to deal with customers who are totally clueless with regards to the formats and brands. I can't even count the number of times where I've been buying two games for different platforms or hardware for one platform and a game for another when I've been told 'you know you can't play game X on your system Y, right?' Although I don't need the help, it's telling that cashiers feel the need to offer that information. Obviously mixups aren't uncommon.

:lol i remember the thread on teamXbox where people were LEGITIMATELY discussing the idea that maybe Nintendo gave Rare the Zelda IP to use on a Zelda Xbox game as a "going away present".
that takes the cake. going away present? oh man :lol

Only present Nintendo gave Rare was a boot neatly packaged with Rare's own rectum.

I've got more nuggets of knowledge, from the same person.

-EGM is biased towards Nintendo. They score anything Nintendo high. You know why? Because their website is 1UP.com.
-Nintendo is in the middle of a hostile takeover by Microsoft, who currently owns 15%-20% of them.
-The Xbox360 is actually a lot more powerful than the PS3, the reason being that MS was smart enough to outsource their chips to other companies.
-You have to pay an additional monthly fee for Wi-Fi gaming on top of normal internet monthly fees.
-Madden 2006 will be the final Madden.

This guy is a manager.
It's starting to make a little more sense, because by telling lies, he's able to get people to preorder off him. Sometimes I try to correct him before I realize he's making a sale, and then pretend like I had no idea what I was talking about. It's frustrating.

Then today, this guy walks into the store and asks about the price of the PSP. He was a little hesitant though, because of the new handheld coming out by the people who made Xbox.

I dreamed I had an Xboy last night, honest to God... it looked great! If they made one just like I saw it, +1 sales fo sho.
