How useful would your profession or skills be in a post-apocalyptic world?

I figure anyone with some books or much better, skills at self sufficient living would be in demand. Going back to farming and raising livestock would be crucial.

Hunger would be a huge issue in a collapse and I think one thing that would help would be for the government (if there is one) to drop tens of thousands of chickens and roosters around cities. Some idiots would just eat them but the smarter ones would raise them for meat and eggs. A bonus would be that they eat all the harmful bugs that pop up.

Hmm.

On Topic.

People will always need entertainment. ....And someone to do visual effects.........
No Escape with Ray Liotta is proof.

What? Judge Dredd lives in a post-apocalyptic world where he enforces the law in what remains of society, right?

I have 3 trade tickets, I could literally build a furnace, burn off impurities in metal, forge metal, sand cast billets of steel. As well as build a lathe out of scrap garbage, and would be machining guns/weapons/knifes in just over a day.

Judge Dredd doesn't police on his own though. He's part of an organization that tries to enforce the law on what remains of the human civilization. A post-apocalyptic law system and law enforcement agency.

I know, but do you think you'll have people go along with you?

Yes. I think that if we looks at human civilization, there has always been an attempt to create order and enforce that order. In a post-apocalyptic world, more than likely many groups would create their own set of rules and laws and would eventually be forced to join the bigger or stronger group with their rules and laws.

Security consulting? Depends on how much fighting we have between warring tribes.

My specialty is IT Security, but that extends to the physical realm from time to time. Additionally, I learn fast, and I can put stuff together pretty well.

My hobbies would help me survive more than my profession, but I would be helpful for a community. On my own, not so much.

Writer, so I'd pretty much only be useful for like, record and shit, sort of like a historian only without 90% of the qualifications to be one. I could also just tell stories and shit to entertain the kids, so that might be useful on some level, but that's more of a thing I'd do to fill the time than be of any actual use all day.

I teach English as a Second Language and I have some Chinese ability.

I guess I'd still be able to teach someone something.

Well If I ever joined a group that needed supplies that happens to be raiding my old store, I could point them to the shelf that keeps the food in preserved jars.

I'm majoring in computer science and considering also majoring in Mathematics. I feel like both math and programming would be in. Some demand for a world starting over.
That's some pussy ass apocalypse we're talking about if programming is still useful, and I say it as someone who work as in software.

Anyway, for me, programming would be useless, my math and physics in theory can be useful, but there are shitload of people who would do better than me in this, my military training would be useful, but honestly, not as useful as people tend to think it would.

Pretty useful. I guess I could write an app for people to trade usefull stuff, based on location.
"Warrior83 is near you and wants to trade food for weapons. Accept offer?"

Working as a writer right now, majored in public policy and would like to go back to school for policy analysis.

So... not so much? Although when society is getting back together I'd have some valuable input on setting up a government.

But in the initial phases? Nope. I do have some amount of weapons training and leadership skills though, I'd probably start my own band of survivors and try to found a safe haven somewhere.

Worthless. Luckily I'm a runner so I could stay ahead of the zombies for a little while at least. I wouldn't be one of the first to die, but I'd die for a random jump-scare midway through.

I'm great at growing plants, veggies, medicinal herbs, etc. I know what grows well here in each season, when to plant, when to harvest, very basic rotation/combinations.. things of that nature. We live in an apartment now, but the last time we had a yard, our diet was significantly supplemented by what we were able to grow. One of the #1 things I look forward to when we get a house again is a return to gardening.

Meanwhile, my profession in medical imaging would be rendered useless. The MRI machine I operate would be parted-out and bartered for hobbyist-level activities, for those smart enough to have acquired alternative energy sources before the apocalypse hits. But that would be a tiny market of folks.

(We also took two semesters in PV system installation at a local community college a few years ago. I'm suspect that this skill alone would make us pretty damn valuable. Electricity would be a huge luxury.)

Computer Science would suddenly be a pretty useless major. But realistically I think any sort of academic degree would be completely useless except for maybe some medical stuff. Engineering wouldn't be worth a damn in a post-apocalyptic scenario unless you have some practical "hands-on" ability. Maybe eventually it'd be really useful for rebuilding society, but you have to make it through the collapse first.

The most useful people would be hunters, mechanics and eventually farmers.

You're not worthless. Grab some binoculars and a messanger bag and you're a mail courier/scout.

Will you join my all-gay survivor's commune?

I could possibly survive just by not eating a lot of food and being willing to do tasks handed to me to other survivors. That's really my best bet. :(

Would computer science people really be that worthless? There's really no reason to automatically assume this disaster would destroy computers unless it's some kind of massive solar flare that kills every electronic device on Earth. In any other case people would probably still need people to fix and maintain computers. Even if the networks go down computers can still do shit. They can make calculations faster than people can, they can be used to make records, keep people entertained, etc. And there are probably still people who'd be able to get the networks back up, in which case it would continue working as a communication system.

Eh. I can somewhat cook. With a knife or spear, I'd be able to stab and peel any animal for a delicious broth. Unless it's a crocodile. In addition, I could probably make a web page from 1998. Oh, and I'd be able to fish with a rod, but not with a net. Could come in handy in a pinch, I suppose.

Oh, and I'm a pretty good leader, mainly in terms of charisma. Just not an especially 'brain smart' one.
