That's some pussy ass apocalypse we're talking about if programming is still useful, and I say it as someone who work as in software.

Anyway, for me, programming would be useless, my math and physics in theory can be useful, but there are shitload of people who would do better than me in this, my military training would be useful, but honestly, not as useful as people tend to think it would.
Well I said this wasn't some "struggle to survive" apocalypse. Not every apocalypse needs to be like what you see in The Walking Dead or Fallout. I'm basically talking about an apocalypse where there is a sudden void in government, which causes all economies to crash and a lack of order. It's not like every computer suddenly blows up.

Well my main skills are video/photo-editing and photography, so those aren't really applicable skills during an apocalypse.

I'm great with teaching languages/math and fixing technology etc, so I could be quite handy. I'm also very adaptive when it comes to learning new skills etc, so I could have quite a few uses in my opinion.

My skills are all business related so I'm not really how sure in demand those would be.

I guess my biggest value would be my willingness to help out and my quick ability to learn.

I am a student going for Human Resources, so I don't think I would be able to contribute much with that.

However, I grew up target shooting for fun and while I am not the best I figure I'm better than most. I'm better at the maintenance/cleaning part.

Plus I can cook pretty decently. Have some basic outdoor skills. I love taking the reigns and being in charge - I've been the captain of sports teams, work groups, school groups, and so on.

I'd do alright.

Auto painter would be relatively useless, as would artistic talent in general I guess, but I was in the Army and have good survival skills. I think I would do ok.

Near zero (psychology and web coding) ... I would be doomed for good. But during my youth I had spent every year working in the farm... so maybe I have a chance :D

My trade would be useless but the skills I learned from it may help in leadership and people management.

My hobbies may help. I enjoy backpacking and car repair/maintenance. If we have a mad Max style apocalypse I may be useful as a gearhead or back country survivalist..

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
My current one staging/decorating frivolous events... completely useless.
My former one as a framing carpenter building houses...probably also completely useless because I'm guessing building occupancy rates would be really, really low.

My hobbies may help. I enjoy backpacking and car repair/maintenance. If we have a mad Max style apocalypse I may be useful as a gearhead or back country survivalist..

Every word of this also applies to me. I don't think gas would last long, though.

Will you join my all-gay survivor's commune?
I'd love to, but I wanna stay home, haha!

Actually, my partner & I are building an ICF house next year with PV panels, raised beds, laying hens, etc. The goal will be to be resilient for hard times. It'd be tough to leave that kind of setup. :p

Dude, teach me. Book recommendations?

I'd say start small, with a handful of crops that you're really interested in growing. Herbs in containers were what I started with in high school. Spearmint in a pot (never in the ground - it grows like a weed - it will take over!) was easy, and made for a nice ingredient in teas, desserts, etc. It also allowed me to see how much each plant would yield, how much I'd enjoy those yields, etc. Some of those small-scale habits will stick with you for a long time; for much of the year, we had green onion shoots growing in a windowsill (with full sun exposure), and once they reach a certain height you can trim shoots off for baked potatoes, pastas, etc.

(Not my pic, but it gives you a good idea)

The first book I'd start with is a standard: Square Foot Gardening

(I'm used to growing food in an urban/suburban backyard setting, so being able to set-up an organized system with a modest amount of space is really helpful.)

Another oldie is Carrots Love Tomatoes, great for telling which combos of plants to grow together.

My schooling would be pretty useless, but I'm a pretty decent seamstress and know how to operate a mechanical sewing machine. I'd be at least somewhat useful.

Until wandering marauders come and take it.

yay another HR person! and a cook to boot \o/

I'm a musician, so my guitar and/or harp playing will keep you entertained around the campfire. Also, I'm strong enough to do menial physical labor, and I know how to make gunpowder. I can make myself useful.

I'm a chef, so I know how to safely prepare, store, cook, and sanitize foods and cooking equipment. With training in first aid, I reckon I'd be pretty useful in preventing people from dying by eating bad food.

I'm a chef and I'd be more useful on hunting, agriculture and breaking down fish / animals. Aite no one have time for red santi buckets and all clad pans.

I'd be dead within a week, I'm also terrible at taking orders so I doubt I'd be tagging along with any random group of folks.

As a physician I guess I would do fine, although my relative lack of experience in surgery could be a problem. It seems like surgical skills will be in high demand when humans start fighting for the remaining resources. I am not really multi-talented other than my profession. Awful wild-life skills, no military training, have never used a firearm in my life, bad at fixing things and bad at cooking food. My best bet would probably be allying with a tough group that can give me food and security in exchange for medical services.

I am a geologist. I like to feel that my understanding of earth structure and resources will be valuable. Being able to successfully drill new wells, and acquire raw materials will be at a premium at some point during the re-foundation of society.

Farmers, Hunters, and anyone who knows anything about how to get power working would be the most useful. Nurses and Doctors are up there as well.

Mechanical engineering.

Aww yiss I'm a srs commodity

It would depend largely on what kind of social structures emerge in this post-apocalypse world. People without practical skills would be dead weight at first. But perhaps there might be some groups with the foresight to keep professionals alive?

Accountants, engineers, scientists, programmers etc might be legitimately useful in a large and well organized enough group, but what are the odds of one of those arising?

I don't think you can lump accountancy/programmers with engineers and scientists, engineers and scientists are like the foundation of everything we do and are mannn. Without them, the post-apocalyptic scenario presented in the OP would very much STAY desolate and medieval

I'd be helping to repair/rebuild our information network. Pretty useful, I'd say. Also have some land way out in the country with a well and stream, and I know how to grow food.

I'm a pretty good leader and information gatherer. Plus I enjoy staying in shape.

I'd probably be a pretty good scout.

i have no skills whatsoever, i just sell living fish for fishtanks, that's all...

maybe i've got some knowledge to survive in books and videogame, but i don't think i'll be much helpful

My degrees (mechanical engineering) and work experience (project and product management) are useless.

I'm a hell of a mechanic, fabricator, and general handyman. The only guy like that in a big group of friends that includes a lot of medical professionals and cops.

I'll be ok - they need me.

Let's say some event occurs that destroys all governments in the world. Civilization is destroyed. Nothing like a virus or zombies or nuclear war, because that would just turn life into surviving day by day. How useful or in demand would your skills be? If you're in school with a selected major, how useful would your skills be?

I'm majoring in computer science and considering also majoring in Mathematics. I feel like both math and programming would be in. Some demand for a world starting over.

I would be useless if we're basing this strictly off our professions. I'm an auto injury claim adjuster.

My only useful ability in a post-apoc world be the fact that I can cook. I'd leverage the shit out of that, people need cooks. Also I would hunt. So that'd be my ticket to survive.

well if there is some kind of fortified place that generates electricity and has computers maybe.

Also, this.

useless until we're back up to the point where electricity and computers are a thing. If we're talking a fallout 2-level of tech then I'd be quite helpful.

now I've basically lived in the woods of northern ontario all my life so I can do other things that might be helpful. Mostly related to fishing and boats. Also spent a good 6 years with my only heat source being wood stoves/fireplaces.

Computer Science degree currently working as a software developer... so I guess it depends on if we've got working power and computers. But wait! I've got other skills like wood working and I'm good at working on cars. Please don't eat me!

Probably zero. I think there would be more important things for humans to worry about than designing websites and apps.

be good with hardware and you'll have a big impact. any software that can benefit farming, security (intruder / zombie detection, etc) will help. remaining ammo counter app. GET ON IT!!

the post-apocalyptic world won't be an intense run-around like i am legend, it'll be more like the getting-set-back-up world as seen in interstellar where farming is in demand and people are just trying to live their lives. that's my thought!

but like i've always said, i minored in philosophy to have something to fall back on in case computer stuff didn't pan out.

Effectively worthless, unless you needed someone to document the apocalypse in writing — or to put craft some propaganda for your militia or whatever.

See it's all about how you sell yourself. That sounds like it'd be pretty useful in the post-apocalypse. Can't have your militia bringing hell on earth with some shitty MS Word flyers. It's gotta look professional.

Might be able to do something with Keying, if I learn how to lockpick.

Otherwise, not much. Computers and paperwork. Don't know anything about growing food or harvesting animal meat. I can change a tire, but that's about it when it comes to cars.

Med student with one year left. I would bury you - literally, most likely. 95% of what I and even experienced doctors know would be useless in any scenario worthy of being called an apocalypse so say hello to medieval-standards of care.

That said, are any of you people drug dealers? In that case you have a bright future! Cocaine or even hasch would make decent makeshift anaesthetics that could allow for some minor surgery. It's that or getting you pass-out drunk while I saw that infected leg off.
